having driven almost all the bakkies available in south africa i have to say the KB (what we called that model Dmax) was certainly the most comfortable of the lot and jumping in a d4d hilux felt like getting into a defender in terms of suspension refinement, if i needed a dual cab for my life it would be an isuzu, luckily i dont so i can drive a car

I'm not a Isuzu car mechanic but I did work for Isuzu trucks as a mechanic.. and done my fair share of on the 4jj1 engine.. they're a solid little donk so much so I bought my a 2013 dmax, as for the turbos they're made by Mitsubishi.. they get noise but yet to see a proper failed one, worse comes to worse put a garret one on.. or even a bigger one.. as for major engine failures yet to see one.. I'm sure there would be.. but compared to others? 4jj1 is less common.. Last thing I wanna do when I get home from work is fix my own shit..

We've owned 3 Dmax's although they were the previous shape to the one being reviewed. All of them were commercial veichles towing interstate their entire lives and all had over 500000km. One of them had 870000km before it finally cracked a piston. It had the original turbo in it as well. In saying that, we had to replace the injectors 3 or 4 times during its life and it had a catch can on it from day 1.

As an Isuzu ute dealership technician, I have witnessed all the phenomenons known to go wrong on the Isuzu's. I have seen two inner guards splits, one on a D-MAX and one on a M-UX, and have been told that having an aftermarket heavy steel bull bar with a winch bolted to it and going on s a lot of serious off roads will cause the inner guard to crack and split, to which both of these vehicles were fitted with off road garb. And Isuzu covered both of them under warranty. I can't blame Isuzu for the turbos, they're made and manufactured by Mitsubishi for isuzu. I have replaced a lot of them, mainly cause they get very noisy (like a siren noise), but have yet to see one fail. Have a replaced a fair few evaporators also in both D-MAX and M-UX, but as per the review, the replacement evaporator is a permanent repair. Due to the evaporator tubes from the TX valve to the core made more rigid via a plate set up to reduce fatigue. F.Y.I. the all new D-MAX have none of these problems.

Don't see how a bullbar thats mounted the the chassis is going to cause the inner guards to crack on the rubber mounted cab. There's people that have the factory plastic bumper with cracked inner guards. I believe it's the soft rubber body mounts at the front of the vehicle.

@@damienferrara3078 I dont think Isuzu care all that much. Especially after seeing people with the "revised" turbo still having multiple failures. The holden colorado is very similar to the dmax but they use a better designed body mount for the 2 front body mounts. I got fitted some to my DMAX and noticed straight away there was way less movement of the cab. The front isuzu mounts are very squishy in comparison. The rest of the body mounts are identical to the colorado but the front 2.

Always loved the d-max since having a fleet of them as work utes with Trademate boxes full of fridgy and sparky gear on the back since 2011 .. have had 2011,2013,2015,2016 and 2019 models and they have all been flogged with a range of specs and auto / manual boxes, all of them have had very minimal mechanical issues with some of them doing over 350k.. they have all been used in metro and rural WA.. BUT since upgrading to the 2021-2022 models we are very disappointed in the mechanical issues and the poor fuel economy compared to the previous models

Had a 2015ish dual cab auto for work, it was a daily driver + commuter. Solid ute, alright on road, decent off road, pretty basic though. Cruise control was good, but slightly annoying that it would reset when you stopped. Seats were good for me, but bad for a co-worker, gave him back pain while one of our Hilux's gave me back pain so we swapped and it was all good. It was fitted with ARB steel, reverse sensors + camera, it was quite easy manoeuvring into parking bays around town. Seems to have taken my punishment quite well.

Great review as usual. Absolutely agree about the need for a 4x4 dual cab, tray is too short to be useful and everything else is a compromise. I have a VW transporter (2.5 5 cylinder diesel) dual cab that has a 2.4m tray and huge cabin that I find more useful and drives far more comfortably on a daily basis. I’ve accepted that it costs to maintain and repair for the practicality. If I need to go off road then use the prado.

I'm an American so we dont have utes. Can I ask what the point is and why you don't just use a regular truck like an F-150? I'm not hating, I'm just curious.
@scottsummers819
@scottsummers819 Жыл бұрын
Put simply size and price is why we don't have stuff like the F150 and Rams etc here in Australia. Yes they do exist but they are really only sold by specialty importers, they have to be converted from left to right hand drive (ie move the steering wheel to the other side). This in some cases nearly doubles the cost of the vehicle. You would be struggling to buy a big new "Yank Tank" as we call them here for much less than $150k . That would be for a base model anything, If you wanted something like a Raptor, probably going to be north of $200k. So you have to have a need or really really want one. Also living with it on the daily would be awful as they simply don't fit in the car parks here. I saw a big dual cab, dual rear wheel Chevy Silverado a while back, it was parked diagonally across 4 spaces, because it really wouldn't fit any other way. Also aftermarket service for the American Trucks is painful. Anyone that has a need for a big truck, usually because they are towing something more than 3 Tonnes tend to go for proper light trucks like Mitsubishi Canters or Isuzu NPS (in 4x4) because for the size they are much cheaper to own, don't guzzle fuel like its going out of fashion and have an established dealer network in out of the way places. Or if you do have $150k to spend you are suddenly looking at top of the range Toyota Landcruisers, V8 Patrols or any number of other cars/4wds that are likely better than the expensive Yank Tank. I appreciate that in the US these vehicles are common and cheap(ish) but that is because they are made and sold locally (mostly) and have an established dealer network. Here in Australia they are unsupported by and large, although Ford was making some noises about bringing in right hand drive F150's with factory support, but that could be a few years away.
@1schlom
@1schlom 2 ай бұрын
They are overkill, unreliable, clumsy, ridiculous and absolute dogsh* off road. Here in Australia with our auto market we aren't anything like Europe in anyway, we love big gear and we have nice wide roads too HOWEVER those pick up trucks are just stupid and unnecessary. Why have a f150 when you could own a Kenworth or Mack? A land cruiser is as big as a personal vehicle needs to be.

I'm Aussie but live in Thailand. I own a top model 4x4, 2015 model 5 speed manual, leather seats. It's got 120k on the clock now. We live in the bush so use the 2L setting every time it rains to get in or out of our home. It cost about $20k cheaper here than those for the aussie market. Regularly book serviced and to date, nothings ever failed - touch wood. All I've done is put aftermarket wheels & tyres on it 275/50R20.. Looks great, fit well, no scraping.. Also, a rear roll cage on the tray and light bar attached. Its not the fastest, or the best for real 4 wheel driving, but it does what I want & need, reliably. Its good on diesel around 700k a tank. If the exhaust ever needs replacing, that'll be an import job from Perth unless I can find a decent shop here to do. The vehicles navigation system is average, but here no new maps since 2013 anyway. We've had to buy a new SD memory card that activates the navi system & stereo once, as has my brother in law here as he's got just the LS model same year that also failed once or twice. If it fails again, I'll swap out head units. The only criticism I have is the low ratio gearing for 1st & 2nd but otherwise, its all good. Until it costs me $$ in repairs its not going anywhere.

For our work we have tried a number of vehicles over the years. We always enjoyed our Late Rodeo to the later D Max’s. I dare say the late Rodeo/ early Colorado were the most planted utes we ever had - felt great even though the turning circles were horrid. The automatics were a miss as they don’t get the best out of the motor compared to others like the 2.8 Colorado. For the last half decade we have had Tritons repeatedly with no issues - mainly due to the price. 3.2, 2.5 were good value but the 2.4 is by far the best motor in the Tritons. Thumbs up the D Max ! Replace the body mounts with Holden Colorado mounts as they are thicker and better and will prevent guards from cracking. The pre 2016 have a more reliable Turbo and no DPF. Saddle the A/C hose going to the evaporator in the engine bay above the firewall this will prevent the vibrations causing the evap to crack and leak refrigerant.

Most people who buy a 4x4 dual cab are buying it for a “lifestyle status”. Hardly any of them get taken off road or cross waterways. Most are driven around town on family duties and they’re pretty shit at that compared to nearly everything else on the road. If you’re a tradie who needs to tow and a big payload then they make sense but probably the 2x4. If you’re a hardcore off-roader then they are ok but not as good as a proper 4x4 suv style body. Utes are a compromise. Not singularly great at anything but adequate at lots. They’re heaps cheaper than better 4x4’s and will carry plenty of stuff. But if that’s all you want it to do then buy a van.

Just started the vid and can’t help myself. I am a 2017 Dmax owner bought from new. Done 135,000km Serviced every 10,000km. Cracked the inner guards. After a long fight Isuzu wouldn’t cover under warranty. We had to pay ourselves. $10k. After that air con failed $2k at least was quoted but luckily they covered it as it was cheaper I guess. March this year. Dpf clogged. Went through a specialist as can’t suffer the trauma of trying Isuzu customer support again plus it would take months to get a response. Specialist tried to clean but was too Coked. He’s done 6 dmaxs but mine was the first that he needed to order a new one. $4000 just for the dpf. Isuzu tiles him he’s get it in a few days last week. He never heard back until Tuesday this week and they said the one they had is gone. Have to wait another 3-4 weeks to get from Japan. Been off the road since March 8th this year. When dpf works it roughly burns off every 500km and I set my odometer to it so I haven’t abused it. They have an end life. In total the car has been off the road for about 6 months. When the guards cracked we had to rent a granny flat with my 1 yo daughter for a month and Isuzu left us for dead. Avoid like the plague. Google image cracked inner guards and you’ll find my post about it on Reddit. Avoid like the plague. (Submitted VCAT Application December last year). Best review I’ve seen on this car you guys have done by far. Excellent research and the mechanic was spot on too. Keep up the great work!

I think that you are lying. SERIOUSLY (thats why you failed at warranty claim).. The inner guards are ok. If yours really got broken it was because of your fault. I crashed my Dmax so hard that even the Rims broke in 2 parts, I go fast over Speed-Bumps and pot holes, I remember that doing Offroad Jumped so hard that the front tyre got flat. My tyres are changed every 1.5 years. My inner guards are just PERFECT. Stop deceiving people. I have owned 5 Isuzu pickups. But if you really want to do something, get a VW Amarok, that way you know you have to get a new UTE every 4 years.

The storage compartment above the head unit is much better in the base model as an open indent in there. It’s way better and more practical. I’ve gotta say, the dmax is the most comfortable as a single cab. I sit in post 5 hours a week and it’s pretty comfort

Turbo issues are across 2 years... not on the rest, and still have a lower number of failures then other brands.. 90% of the cracked guards are caused by bullbars not being fitted correctly and coming into contact with the body, have seen this on other brands as well. The trouble is... really not much actually goes wrong on most of these.. so the issues that happen to all 4wds sound like major issues.. while other brands have much bigger issues, that hide the common faults between all of the brands.

Complete dash removal and the resultant $1500-$2000 bill applies to most modern vehicles whereby a replacement a/c evaporator or heater core is required. Similarly, heater and vent control flaps, shafts and or any other repair to the workings of the Hvac system, often requires complete dash removal.

I've got a 2007 4x4 single cab trayback. Manual 3L diesel. So this is for the pre 2012 model. TL:DR For a work ute, absolutely great, dependable so long as your not flogging it. For a daily/personal ute, I wouldnt be buying another one used (at least outside of warranty). Too many small things to fix after time, and there much nicer ones on the market (no shit, anything 10 years ago is nicer). Lot of power, can be really nippy. I get about 8-10L/100K on highways. If im following a semi it nearly doubles. The engine is very rough when coasting or at idle. If the aircon is running it smoothens out with the extra 100 revs or so. Single cab seat doesnt go back far enough for me (6'6"), but i've gotten used to it. Bang my knee on the handbrake though (pull one under steering wheel, not a foot or lever one). Its VERY loud inside. I havent put any sound deadening in it, but when your above 80kph its loud. Like any leaf sprung rear, its very bouncy, but its bounces more than any other ute ive driven (single or dual cab). Need to be careful when its raining because (no traction control) it bounces so much you lose traction very easily accelerating. Havent had to do any towing but i've weighed it down with a ton of crusher dust here and there. Performed well. It works well enough offroad and in tracks. Very low stock though. Have yet to take it on the beach but i think it'll struggle a bit with the blows getting on and off the beach. Mine is just shy of 300K, lots of little things going wrong and need replacing. Also doesnt help that the previous owners neglected the shit out of it. So if your buying used, make sure that its tidy and maintained. Check for oil leaks, particularly around the rear-head, semi-common issue. And for rust and the usual things. Also check the vehicle recall lists.

In the single cab the Seats are awful! If you’re taller than 5” 8’ then you will struggle to get comfortable ! the pedal placements are also not great. Nowhere to put your left leg and the accelerator pedal feels further forward that the brake and clutch. Which becomes unbearable when doing big miles. Feels like you’re sat in a stress position.
