We know Travis' entire family is infected, including even the dog. We do not know when or how, we do not know the vectors or incubation period. They may even all be infected at the beginning of the movie before Will even shows up. If you look at Travis', his dad's, and the dog's behavoir we may have to assume that erratic behavior is a symptom including paranoia, hysteria, hallucinations and, with Travis, night terrors, i.e. the IT that comes at night. There is no evidence of zombies or monsters other than the imaginings of Travis' family, again including the dog barking and running after nothing apparently. To me the most important question is Who let the dog into the house? Will asks the obvious question as to whether Travis opened the red door, but perhaps prudently does not ask the next obvious question Who opened the outer door? Will knows and we know the outer door is always locked and only the father or mother would have the only key. Will bristles when asked about Andrew's sleepwalking because he sees the wheels turning in the father's mind, whose attitude appears to be best shoot and burn then ask question later. And I think it is dawning on Will that only Travis, but more likely the father or mother could have let the dog in, and that he has brought his family into a house of infected that have lost touch with reality, maybe something he has seen before at the last place they stayed. Hence, his decision to get out of dodge, but knowing in their madness that the family would rather kill them then let them leave. I think the real twist is we saw Travis and his family as the protagonists, the ones trying to survive the horrors of this new world, but really they were already infected, it was Will and his family who had a chance to make it, but unfortunately got caught in the downward spiral of Travis and his family.

Nah bro. First off, we don't know they are infected as there's no evidence to suggest it. It seems that this outbreak is relatively new given the time frame Will gave and the fact that neither of them knew much else. Paranoia and fear are all basic human emotions that are justified during a time of crisis so there's no reason to assume that these are symptoms of anything besides stress, same goes with the nightmares. Also, Paul was a rational thinker and would react occasionally to fear ie the ambush and when Will first breaks in. Yes he shot at Will when he broke through the door, but that was more of a physical reaction than an intentional one, otherwise he would have shot Will right there in the next room. Paul is cautious, he looked for signs of infection on Will, waited for him to turn before making a decision to kill or free him, even deciding to wait 3 days with Will's family before even considering to bring them back to his home. If Andrew had not already been infected, Will would have has no reason to suddenly panic, as Paul would have gone through the same checklist as he once did with him, but Will knew that wasn't the case.

People will imply by set he means it's two of exact key for the door but he meant set as in the 2 keys needed to open the red door and the outside. It couldn't be a need for two copies of both door keys to be given to two different people because remember they always walked in pairs for safety and the mother and father always went with the son.

Tons of questions still left unanswered but my biggest one is what the heck did Travis see when he hallucinated about going after the dog? There was a baby cry and he was so obviously terrified. We know that it doesn’t take just anything to terrify him because he had seen his grandfather a couple times and he only seemed scared but whatever he saw TERRIFIED him.

Well, I believe that the "It" promised in the title of the film is fear, something that is often regarded to be most powerful at night. And being that this film was more about the personification of a concept, I would say that he was confronted not by a monster or something to that extent, but by the realization of his fears. The dream was most likely his subconscious trying to take control back, approaching his dogs bark with protection and conviction. Upon confronting this object, the fears he holds pertaining more so towards the more vulnerable members of the house, Stanley and Andrew (hence the mixture of barking and crying) brought upon the realization that he was helpless to protect those around him, let alone himself. Losing everything he cares about to the obscurity of the world around him of which is engulfed by death and is the reason why he "wakes up" into another dream where is infected alongside his grandfather, who represents an inescape to the accepting inevitable.

Why would a wife wait that long to shoot a man on top of her husband trying to bash his head in? Movies are going to have to do a better job of showing what a woman would really do in situations. @@tokisugar Haven't seen the movie, but one thing that could explain her waiting so long is fear. People respond differently to fear. Fear always causes a reaction. She most likely was paralyzed in fear. In movies it's very cliché as it builds tension and puts the audience on the edge of their seats. It leaves us asking ourselves, "What are they waiting for?" We want them to act now, before the situation becomes far worse. People respond differently to fear, and while we may not like that she waited, it accomplished exactly what the directors were going for; Tension.

Well.... I think it served to show she didn’t want to do it, she’s obviously not as cold hearted as Paul but I do think she should have shot sooner. Another theory is, maybe she thought he was just trying to knock him out to get away and didn’t want to jump to conclusions, or maybe she just strait up froze in shock of what was happening.

I noticed in this film, when Paul is driving with will in the car to wills place, literally a few moments before the 'ambush' theres a figure in the woods, it looks like something sitting on a tree stump at o:29:21. Here's my thinking behind everything that happened in this film. Firstly I think Will was not alone in his initial break in attempt at Paul's place. The whole line of him thinking the place was uninhabited also makes little sense, there's a lot of noise made by Paul's family and yet Will still attempts to break in - even after they shout warnings - I 'think' unless my memory is failing me. So I believe Will knew it was inhabited and likely defended and still attempted to break in, leading me to believe the two men who later 'ambush' the vehicle when Paul is driving to Wills place are actually his brother and a friend of his brother and possibly a third person (I'll get to that in a bit). I believe this because during the scene where Will is sharing a drink with Paul he contradicts a story about his brother. It would also explain why he was beating on the man (his brother) after the ambush, as after he sees Paul shoot his brothers friend, he panics for his brothers life and figures if he beats him then he can save him being shot, which doesn't work, hence his 'oh sh*t' reaction. Notice all throughout the drive, but especially after they pass what I believe to be a figure in the woods, Will starts looking around shiftily, like he's looking for someone, I suspect he's looking for his friends, who 'ambush' the car! I believe that Wills initial intention was to basically rob Paul's family of resources - a fact that will be important later or ironic reasons. - After Paul and Will share a drink and Will contradicts his story about his brother, I believe Paul becomes highly suspicious of him. It's around this time that he starts to plan to kill of Will and his family and actually steal their resources instead. I believe the dog could have been sensing this third unknown person from Will's group, which is why Will had no hesitation to suggest that they look for the dog/wen't running after Travis, because he knows he at least is safe coz he know's the dogs probably sensing one of his friends (maybe even this was the figure seen sat on a log at 0:29:21?). He's worried for his friend and also probably wan'ts to lead Paul into another ambush, but Paul doesn't buy it. I believe that the dog suddenly goes silent coz the friend has killed it, but probably after themselves receiving a deadly bite which they later bleed out from. Paul, suspicious of Will goes out at night to look for the dog and determine what it was barking at - as he suspected Will was setting another ambush for him after Wills contradictions during the drinking scene. He finds the dog, but next to the dog, also finds Will's other group member dead. He realises his suspicions were confirmed and thus he becomes determined to set up Will and steal his resources instead. - Remember Paul is the only one with a key to the red door. He brings back the dead dog and places it in the outer room (beyond the red door), he then breaks into the room of Will and his partner (they've been shown to be heavy sleepers, when Travis returns the boy to the room), and picks up the boy and puts him in the grandpa's room, near the door, to set him up as being infected. Remember it's Paul who first suggests that the boy is infected. He knew about his sons sleep walking, so he knew that his son Travis would stumble upon the dog, leading to the events which escalated, giving him the excuse to claim that Will and his family were infected and thus kill them and steal their resources. I think he also was starting to dislike the fact that Travis was growing closer to Will - the whole wood chopping scene - and also Will's wife was becoming an infatuation of Travis's, again meaning she would have influence over Travis, thus Paul felt he was losing his grip as the leader of the pack, so to speak. This would also explain why he would be willing to take the mask off. I mean, as far as he knows, if he didn't orchestrate this turn of events, is that Will's entire family are infected, now even if Will is threatening him with being shot, do you really think Paul would have taken his mask off? No. He does so, because he knows full well that he's not infected. Perhaps Will even suspects Paul and so his line that 'no one in this room is infected' is a sort of, and u know it wink to Paul. This leaves two unanswered questions tho: 1) Where did Will get the gun from and 2) How did Travis get infected, if none of Wills family, nor the dog, were actually infected at any point?
@SCORPIO06061988
@SCORPIO06061988 6 жыл бұрын
I have since thought about this, I have an answer for #2 = What if Travis's dreams of being outside were semi hallucinations/memories. Maybe he wen't out to find the dog - BUT after Paul had already snuck out and left the door open, then maybe what he saw in that 'hallucination' which he seemed shocked by, was Paul dragging the dogs dead corpse back to the house - in order to set up Wills family. Maybe the reason he asks Travis - 'don't lie to me, did u go outside' etc was to check that Travis didn't remember what he had seen - as he was sleep walking at the time! Perhaps then Travis picked up the infection somehow outside, as he had sleep walked without the gas mask/gloves in the woods and perhaps touched something during that/breathed it in?! Maybe he still wasn't infected at that point, but after Paul kills Wills son and sees his wife's reaction, realizes he can't ever let Travis remember what he saw, as he would figure out what Paul had done (set up Will and his family) so purposefully infects him to cover his tracks?! - Which no one would question, as Travis said himself, if their infected, so am I (except for in this scenario Will and his family were never actually infected). Maybe thats another reason Paul didn't want Travis to see the dog, as he was worried it might trigger a memory. At the end of the day the director himself has said that he has ideas of what happened but that everything of importance happens off screen - so really it's anyone's guess and the film is open to interpretation. I can deffinitely understand why this film was not well received by most. Most 'thinking man's/women's' films tend to at least have breadcrumbs and clues as to what the real story is, but if this director is to be believed, he purposefully placed no bread crumbs or clues. This makes it more open to interpretation, but at the same time kinda makes it the DIY of films. Which given that many paid money to see this at the cinema, I can completely understand why being told, here are the parts, assemble the story yourself, for many was too much! I appreciate anyone who reads all this, I know I wrote an entire essays worth on this film LOL, but the detective in me just likes to analyse films like this and 'work stuff out' ;) :P

It all sounds good but the thing that throws it all off was the fact that they left the guy in the woods for some time. His group would have either rescued him or thought he was dead after he didn't come back. Also at any time during the time they stayed with the family they could have either killed them while they were out in groups of two or stole all their resources while they left the house for 3 days straight.

A lot of these theories rely on there not being evidence against it, which is just speculative at that point. It is never truly established that visions are connected to the disease. That there was a third key for Travis is only an assumption. And if the dog jumped in through a window it should've made far more noise. A quote from the director goes like this: "I will say I care way less about unpacking how this, like the logic of it. What I care about is, and why I like the movie to have an openness, is that it can kind of mean different things to you." This would suggest that there simply is no true answer to the mystery, that it was written without any regard to logic, assuming that audiences would just add their own solution.

Short answer, they wanted to make a movie that people would like because they think it’s mysterious and ambiguous when in reality it’s a bunch of lazy writing that adds up to a slow story that seems to be ripping off the same ambiguity left in The Blair Witch Project. Acting was the only aspect of this film I enjoyed.

Nobody in Will's family was ever infected. Paul's whole entire family is infected or at least the grandpa and travis. Will discovered Travis is infected and tries to leave. The fear takes over Paul's family and starts fueling the conflict. Andrew is never shown as Will's family tries to escape because they know Paul's family wants to kill him so, we cant verify Andrew is sick. The sickness caused Travis to have nightmares, Travis even knew he is infected. So in the end, Paul's family made a huge mistake. Paul's family was doomed from the start. Will's family is innocent and tries everything in their power to survive without hurting others. Paul's family was always shown separated and distance. Will's family had more passion and care.

Grandpa infects dog. Dog infects Travis. Travis infects Paul and Sarah (unknowingly). The family moves in and are infected (unknowingly). The dog is wheezing, hallucinating and snaps aggressively at Paul. Dog under full effect of the disease uses it's body to jump through the boarded windows and injurs itself further. Will agrees with Paul that it mightve been an animal attack, but who opened the outside door? Travis couldve had keys. The new family realizes during their room quarantine that their son was definitley in bed with them the entire night and that Travis was sleep walking and hallucinating that their son was sleep walking. Will puts two and two together with that and the dog. They start talking about leaving and knowing that the paranoia will make Paul suspicious of them trying to hide being sick. The conversation, plus the onset of the disease (Will makes him close his eyes) makes the little boy upset. Little did Will and Sarah know, that they already know everyone in the house is sick. Instead of trying to convince Will of this because at the time the paranoia and delusions were high and he was at gunpoint, he just wanted his family to get out of there to die peacefully. So he tells Paul to take off the mask (in a way, If everyone's sick "no one's sick" to ease the tension). Which doesnt help because Paul still thinks that his family isnt sick. Deep down, Paul and Sarah know that Travis is sick, but not because of their own faults, but because of the new family's somehow. - All in all, I think at the face value, in the greater scheme of things, it looked like the whole point at first was to not trust anyone but family. Dont trust anyone but your own kind, as Paul said with his line about only trusting family. But the irony of it all is that the actual main theme at the end, is to not use bias to form scapegoats. By nature, we always see outsiders as threats, and even when proven wrong, if something goes aray, it definitely cant be our own fault right? It has to be the outsiders'... Everyone lost. Regardless, even without diving deeper, I thought it was a great psychological thriller. I jumped into it without seeing a trailer or anything and I was expecting a creature to appear at the red door every night type of movie. I was wrong and it was beautiful. Maybe that's the meta part in the title? Why they chose to mislead the audience with the name, not just for a creative purpose about how everything bad happened at night, but to reinforce the idea that your own interpretations of things might not be what is happening. Also why we were put through Paul, Sarah, and Travis' storyline and not the other family. Even me just interpreting this movie is contradicting lol.

Here's my theory: after watching the death of his grandfather, Travis realizes that the state of the world is so weak and savage that he will never get to lead a full and happy life, as he's trapped in the house with no outside contact. The dreams he's having are a sign of how depressed he's feeling. My theory is this: when Travis has the conversation with Will's wife, and is clearly attracted to her, he realizes that he will never experience love like that. He becomes suicidal, but doesn't want to see his family go on without him (knowing it would crush them mentally). To avoid this, he must figure out a way to kill everyone at the same time without making himself look guilty. When he finds Andrew in his grandfather's room, he figures the kid is sick and knowingly infects himself and the family to kill them off. The second family then comes into contact with travis' family, infecting them as well. Thus, Travis quietly takes his whole family out of their stressful world.

1. Will knew those guys in the forest. I think him and his family were somewhat nomadic and he would’ve returned as soon as he was strong enough to take Paul’s supplies 2.It had to have been Travis to open that door. 3. The red door being open at the end signifies the one time trouble entered and nobody was prepared for it… therefore, the sickness was able to infect everyone.

No, because if he had, he would've been abandoned on the spot. There was a very slight slippage before he regained composure and played it up like he meant they could've questioned them. People can exercise control over their emotions for the purpose of manipulation, especially in situations of survival. But the thing is, the 'slippage' was so subtle that he could've very well been completely innocent the whole time. Thats the point of psych horror: to mess with your mind and make you question and analyze everything.

The actors did a fantastic job and the foundation for a great psychological horror was there, but the writing needed work. The character motivations frequently didn’t make sense. It’s like the writers wanted something to happen because it’s creepy so they just had a character do that thing whether or not it made any rational sense. To me a good psych horror is one where the characters’ motivations are initially unclear and you don’t know why they are acting that way until the end, at which point you get the full picture and can think about previous scenes with new understanding.

Ive seen the opinion that there’s “no bad guy” in this film and that both families were just trying to survive. I disagree. In my opinion, Paul has clearly snapped and become paranoid and overly controlling in this movie. I could hardly stand how he treated Travis most of the time, like he was a 5 year old boy rather than a 17 year old teen. He even uses the languages that his dog is “sick” rather than just telling him the dog is wounded and dying. In the end I believe Paul and his wife were by far the most in the wrong. Will’s family wanted to leave, and instead they became like forceful dictators who murdered them in cold blood because there was a chance they could come back someday. Travis’s heartbroken reaction can be seen when he recognizes what his parents have done. All we need to see to know that Paul was completely out of control is when he killed the innocent little boy Andrew. And for what? They were escaping into the woods anyways. To me the chaos was most forcefully lead by Paul in the film, and his smothering over controlling nature. That’s part of why the relationships in the family are so strained.

I think Travis having a key is the only explanation I can accept. It's a shit explanation, but nothing else gets even close to making sense. And that's what's wrong with this movie. I'm all for ambiguity, not knowing who infected whom and all that, I think that's brilliant. But logical fallacies? A director admitting he literally didn't give a shit about the logic of the movie? That's not cool. There's purposeful ambiguity, and then there's laziness
@geraldhartman2336
@geraldhartman2336 7 жыл бұрын
This movie was pointless...literally. LOL "The director is lazy" is actually being kind. he sucks,...I'd say hateful actually. The title: It Comes at Night. What, what comes?...unless we take into account the only thing he shows - invaders/sleeplessness/sleepwalking/good and bad dreams/sex. NONE of these conditions of humanity inherently are nefariously contagious, let alone specifically monstrous to say: "IT (only?) comes at night". AND bc the director wants to be lazy, he never ties them in as symptoms, WHILE he does show actual symptoms of the disease. He doesn't care and in so he causes confusion,...or he only cared to cause confusion. I've always looked for (and found) some semblance of redeeming quality in every movie I ever seen...until now. I have to say it's an utter waste of time.

i think the red door may be an homage and reference to Stanley Kubrick's Shining in which the defining supernatural event that basically let's the audience know something supernatural is actually going on and Jack isn't just crazy is when the dry stock door unlocks itself and opens for Jack. I think the film does have a supernatural element otherwise why make so many allusions to it. The monster so to speak is abstract similar to the monster in evil dead that zooms around the forest, however, the contemporary approach removes the abstract entity from zooming around the woods and fully restrains itself from creating a sort of typical spook fest like modern demon and supernatural entity movies like the conjuring and insidious and sinister. The evil presence is more subtle than that. It doesn't reveal itself in the usual corny ways those types of antagonists reveal themselves in the movies. The title has a double meaning to it. The evil entity does come at night and curses the youth of the family to punish the fathers for their sins. But the other meaning is fear which is what the entity uses to turn the families against each other.

The title was misleading, and that's a no no... The lack of details and info is overwhelming. They took the idea of "The Thing" in which nobody can be trusted and you didn't know who is infected, I lot of people liked this movie but I want my movies to have a understanding at the end that way I can enjoy the work put into it, don't let me make up a conclusion about a movie cause that's just manipulating me to give your(the writer) movie the ending you couldn't come up with. Some people like to be manipulated this way cause it creates a sense of problem solving in their mind which in reality is what they're lacking and will call the movie amazing and feel the sense of accomplishment cause they feel they got the right explanation to it "etc". 5/10 is what I can give it.

So there was only 1 key that he acknowledged the existence of, he trusted will pretty much entirely when this information was leaked to him. Only him and his wife would have this key at any given moment. Your belief about Travis having opened the door could have been entirely possible if he did hand it off to Travis AFTER the talk him and will had when holes started to appear in Wills original story. The dog couldn't have jumped through any window. We had a whole scene sequence of the wives boarding up the windows during their bonding time. All of the windows throughout the house are boarded up. Sean said so when listing off the rules. The windows to the room? Boarded up after Wills break in.

This movie was great until the door scene. The events that happened afterwards are just stupid because of it. You can clearly see the door had a bolt lock, well beyond the boy's reach. [Spoiler Alert] It should be, "it came at night." If they didn't let Will in [who came in at night] they would have lost their son to the disease. Will [and the consequences of helping others] is the "it" in this story. This is in contrast to the social model we take for granted that helping others benefits everyone. The theme of this movie is accepting this dystopian world and the rules that govern it. Paul displays his willingness to accept these rules by mercy-shooting his sick father-in-law to save the rest of the family. He then makes a poor decision and yields to helping out strangers, which causes the violence in his safe home and the death of his son. This is a cautionary tale leading you to the conclusion that you need to consistently respond appropriately to your environment, stockpile more ammo, and always vote for 2nd Amendment supporters! 🤣😂🤣

Paul and his entire family were infected. Will and his family were not. You drew the completely incorrect conclusion but this film is hard to understand and is open to some interpretation. Fact is the grandfather was definitely infected and that infection spread to the dog. Travis was the first to show symptoms but its very likely all were infected. Will realized this and wanted to get his family out but Paul and Sara's paranoia from the infection made them uber suspicious. To make it blunt. This is the story of a family of infected individuals going insane and killing a family of uninfected individuals. Had Will not arrived they would have turned on each other.
