Here is my therory I think Travis was infected this entire time, hear me out, he cant sleep at night very well and he has fever dreams, Travis mentioned that his grandpa ''BUD'' was unable to sleep too and would sleepwalk during the last week of his life and often forget where he was or what he was doing,. When Paul ask if Andrew sleepwalks both his mother and father deny it offensively Strongly suggesting that sleepingwalking is a symptom of the sickness that and Andrew also mentioned he cannot renmber what happened, MEMORY loss is also a symptom. Travis infected Andew how did Travis got infected? Stanley, Stanley was his grandfather's dog and continued sleeping on his bed most likely got infected that way and infected Travis. The dog probally had fever dreams as well and got paranoid and THATS why it run into the woods, Some of Travis fever dreams are NOT fever dreams they are in fact scenes of what really happened, Travis opened the red door as it was established that Andew was far to small to unlock it anyway, Travis had contact with the dying Stanley and then went back into the house and most likely forgot about it. (the sickness probally works as a parasite, that can mess with its host brain in order to make more people sick) in the end who opened the red door wasnt't important anymore because all of them were infected and the sickness just worked slower or faster at some people. What ''comes '' at night? pure and simple the Symptoms of the infection: Fever Dreams, Memory Loss and Sleep walking

U are absolutely wrong. It takes a day to notice symptoms and if Travis or Stanley were infected, they would all be sick or they would all be dead. Travis had nightmares because of him seeing his grandpa's death. Stanley was sick because of the lake water. He probably drank some out of the forest. Andrew opened the door and got sick because this all happened in one day and Andrew was just getting symptoms. Andrew got Travis sick and Andrew got will Kim and Paul sick because they were all in the same room. Sarah got sick because of paul

So what I'm gathering here is that psychological thrillers are mismarketed as monster flicks. People went to see the Babadook to watch a film about a sinister villain from a kid's book coming to life, and instead got a metaphor for a widow's grief. People went to see the Witch to see a witch kill a pilgrim family in the woods, but in the end, it was a film about a religious family tearing itself apart due to religious paranoia. The question is, how do you sell a film like the Babadook without misleading the audience, while also not spoiling the twist?

It was pleasing & disappointing in ways, but still a great experience. It was thought-provoking, well acted, nicely directed & shot. It left me craving more. Movie studios get people into the theaters. They aren't there to tell you anything as to what the movie is truly about or how you will like it.

Difference of opinion, but I actually think the depressing feel was starkly realistic. Sometimes in life, there is no happy end. You just sit with the events and think about them, without ever getting answers. I really liked how depressing it was because I feel like in a world like the one this movie took place in, there wouldn’t be many answers or explanations when shit just goes south.

I genuinely loved this movie. And not in a pretentious "you just have to think about it way." I'm 100% fine with not knowing anything, because the characters in the film didn't know anything. There's an excellent sense of dread and paranoia built throughout the entire film, and it was fantastic. Was he lying about the brother? Who hurt the dog? You don't know because our main characters have no idea, and I think it really creates the great finale and resolution we're left with. So while I get wanting everything or most things tied up neatly at the end, I feel like this movie jumped into the middle of people's lives during a tragedy, made you feel for and understand them, and then left you wondering about how everything went or could have gone -- just like the main characters. It's a tragic and gut-wrenching drama, more so than a horror movie, but I thought it was nevertheless gripping and visceral. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is my first time commenting on your channel - big fan though! My husband and I went to see this yesterday (Sunday) and then immediately came to your channel to see if you'd reviewed it, and you hadn't yet so we sat and thought about what the movie meant... here is what we came to. We think what "comes" at night is Travis's dreams/nightmares/sleepwalking. Near the end, Paul (Joel Edgerton) says something along the lines of, "You haven't yet seen what desperate people can do." I think this could have been a play on words... Paul thinks Will is going to do something out of desperation, when in the end Paul was the most desperate to save his family. Because of Paul's desperation, he could not allow himself to trust Will and his family, even though (in my perspective) they were completely trustworthy. Paul was looking for every excuse to not trust him, so when Will had the slip-up of the brother/brother-in-law comment, it sealed the deal for Paul, and now he was extra leery about Will's family. Will seemed to be the most honest person in the group (for example: when he agreed to every single thing that Paul asked him to do when they first run into each other, and at the end when he and the wife have the guns out, he is the one that says they should both lower the gun and he is the only one that really does-ish). Back to Travis for a second... it seemed that sometimes his dreams would have some foreshadowing (I only saw the movie once and didn't really have this thought until the end so I could be wrong), but like... he dreamed of Kim and then he saw her right after he woke up, etc. I think, he went out into the woods (like he did in his dream) and saw his dog injured and dragged his dog back into the house (it looked like, when they found the dog that there were streak marks of blood of him being dragged). In his sleep walking state, he went back to bed, woke up, saw Andrew asleep in another room (still not sure why the boy was in another room), and ushered him back to bed. Then there was the group meeting and everyone decides to split up for a day. I think Will's family assumes that Travis was the one who opened the door (not Andrew, like Travis's family thinks) and is likely sick so they want to escape asap (which is exactly what they say at the door when Paul knocks - because, they're honest people). Paul panics and assumes the worst and then... the killing happens. I think Paul is the "monster" (by killing Will's family) out of desperation to protect his family. In the end, everyone dies. And they would have all died anyway because Travis (or maybe Andrew) opened the door and then infected them all. Anyway... Not sure this is making sense, or that this will even get read. It's definitely a film worth discussing so this seemed like the best place to share my thoughts. My husband and I really liked the film for making us think so hard. Am glad to see that you did end up reviewing this. As I watched your review, I thought, 'Of course he'd review it! He loves horror films!' Thanks! :)

barun and katekagood, i know this is now a month from that month haha, but ive just seen it for the 3rd time now after giving it a rest. and there are hints throughout the 3rd and final act of the movie that Travis sleepwalks. First as Kate already mentioned, it seems to be a popular theory that it was not a dream when showing Travis outside at night and dragging the dog back inside due to fact 1: the dog was clearly dragged inside by someone / something. fact 2: the door was opened from the INSIDE. fact 3 there is no possible way Andrew was the sleep walker due to his lack of height and strength needed for opening all the locks and getting the keys from the father, and the strength to drag the dog so far back inside. it is also hinted that Travis was the sick sleepwalker as if you may remember, not ONCE did they show Andrew during the final act. the director purposely hide the child from the viewers because Andrew WAS NOT SICK. and Kate's theory is correct by the fact that wills family just wanted to leave because they knew it was Travis who was sick and not Andrew but Paul already had doubts of their family and was very protective of his. thus killing will and his family. i was surprised by the ending for sure. i had also fallen for the marketing so i expected a completely different movie but none the less after thinking about it after the movie it was actually a really good movie. just not what i had expected is all :)

SPOILERS, PLOT POINTS EXPLAINED Andrew was never sick. Will told him to close his eyes in case he was forced to kill Paul. Paul's family are the antagonists of the film. Travis opened the red door while sleepwalking. Will's family wants to leave because they fear Travis is sick. It is Paul's fear that turns him into a monster and ends up killing Wills family.

Ernesto Grey I also think that Travis contracted the illness through the grandfather's dog. Although it seems like the dog was just a carrier for the illness and didn't actually show signs of being sick. Travis' nightmare about the dog being killed maybe him remembering what happened when he was sleep walking the night before. He left the house, saw the dog getting mauled and came back to the house without closing either door (this would explain how the dog was able to get into the room)

I just finished it here's my interpretation , Travis was sick from the beginning and most likely Paul and his wife too. The dog was sick,there was nothing in the woods he was hallucinating, that's why he bit Paul. Paul is now infected from the bite if he wasn't already .Will signed his and his families death sentence by agreeing to stay with Paul and his family,But will is not innocent he tried to set up Paul ,the men who attacked them when they were driving were his buddies .any of Paul's family may have opened the door and let the dog in while hallucinating because they and will's kid were all infected at this point but the kid couldn't reach the lock.

I figured it was a metaphor for fear of the unknown Travis was inexperienced with certain things (like women) and his uncertainty was emphasized every night, where the camera focused on him mostly Who opened the door was unknown, the intentions of the other family was unkown, the intention of the MAIN family was unknown, who was infected was unknown That's what I took away from it, VERY interesting movie indeed. Although my comment doesn't really make up for the "travis sleepwalks" implication Perhaps the unknown of "who opened the door" and having it be Travis was a reference, or a callback to "Who was infected?" once again...Travis.

My boyfriend and I stumbled over this film by accident and watched it, without any anticipation, and we both really enjoyed it. To me, this was clearly a character-driven film, more than it was a plot-driven one. We focus on cause and reaction, as well as the elements of isolation, and why the family would set up all those rules. We discussed if it was the right thing to board up like that in an epidemic like this, or if they could have done something else, and came to the conclusion we understood why they boarded up, even if we didn't necessarily agree with the idea, as they made themselves captives in the house. One thing we caught onto, as we discussed it in the end, is that Travis' nightmares actually hint at him being a sleepwalker. The door happened to be open after he had a dream where he went through that door. It made no sense for Travis' family to think it was the little boy who opened the door, since he couldn't reach. None of the adults remembered opening it, neither did Travis, but watching his dreams, and where he ends up, and how something seems to happen in those areas a few times, we came to the conclusion that Travis walks in his sleep. We didn't know how long he'd done it, but I for one thought it was triggered by the grandfather's death where we see these PTSD-like nightmares for the first time. Because the nightmares do serve a purpose in some way. Maybe not to the plot, but to the character Travis. It’s a way of showing how his mind copes with this whole ordeal, and probably also to hint that he walks in his sleep, and he was the one who opened the door. We didn't reach an agreement on how Travis got ill, though. We first talked about the little boy. But there was no actual hard proof that the small boy was ill. He cried in the parents’ bedroom, and they hid his face when Travis’ dad came with a shotgun. My boyfriend thought that was suspicious, how they tried to keep Travis’ dad out, and how they hid the little boy’s face, but I for one understoond it. The other couple clearly understood Travis’ parents were paranoid, got scared about their little boy, and decided they should move on. The little boy COULD be crying out of fear, and hiding his face reinforces that idea, as seeing Travis’ dad wield a gun at them would have made him panic even more. So the little boy COULD have been ill, sure, or he could have just been scared. Since we agreed Travis walked in his sleep, we talked about whether or not he found the dog during the night, since he dreamt about it before it was found. And if he did find it and take it home in his sleep, he could have gotten ill from that. And the last possibility, is that he was ill all along, since he shared a bedroom with his grandfather, but it took its time really getting to him, since he’s 17 and looks relatively heathy.

I went into the theater without paying much attention to the trailer and I left the theater loving the movie. The movie isn't about a "physical" monster or threat like the marketing team lead us to believe, but about the fear and paranoia of survivors in a post-apocalyptic era. The beauty isn't really about the plot but all the details that were portrayed. The dialogue and reactions seems perfectly genuine for the characters, of course the intruder would lie to a man with a gun to his head because he is afraid, of course a father would berate his son over a dog because he is worried, of course a family would defend themselves as guests because they are petrified. The only thing that comes at night is the constant reminder of the soul crushing anguish that these characters are facing and no amount of doubled door rooms, boarded up windows, seclusion, provisions, and firearms can really protect them from that.

I feel like a misleading trailer is a death sentence for a movie. If the trailer makes the movie look better than it is, the audience is disappointed; if the trailer makes it look worse, audiences won't see it; if the trailer makes it look like a really good movie of one genre, but in reality it's another genre, regardless of its actual quality, then audiences will be disappointed. However, the point of the trailer is to just get butts in seats, and if that means advertising psychological horror like it's a monster movie, then so be it.

Effeffia Gonalick That’s the worst for me, when a psychological thriller is marketed as a monster movie, because I’d actually much prefer to see a psychological thriller but I often won’t want to see a monster movie. So if a psychological thriller (which I actually want to see) is marketed incorrectly, I’ll often miss it because I don’t realize that’s what it was. My take: They focused so heavily on Travis' dream sequences (and him as a character), that I think it's most likely he was the cause of the illness being brought in. He kept saying he wasn't sleeping well, so it's very possible he started losing track of what was real and what was a dream, so much so that he went out into the night to find his dog and brought it back home. This is when he got sick. They even said that Andrew was too short to open the door to begin with. So, the reason Will wanted his family to leave was simply because he didn't feel safe anymore, given that Paul seemed convinced that Andrew was sick. They wanted to leave and get their share of supplies, which he knew Paul wouldn't have given them (at least as much as they'd hoped).

In my understanding of the movie, the idea is to experience everything from the characters perspectives. SPOILERS: They all died not knowing any of the truth. There is probably something in the woods causing the infection, but the family doesnt know. Nobody knows what is happening, in the cities, etc. So, the audience will experience the fear of the unknown until the end. I found it refreshing, and i loved it.

Wow. I waited 4 years to finish this Chris Stuckmann video, because I didn’t want spoilers and finally saw the film. I loved it. The movie, not this review. I’m very surprised Stuckmann didn’t get it. I suppose that goes to show, films speak to others differently, especially the ambiguous ones. To me, it was obvious at the end that Travis was sick the entire time. And it is a horror that Paul never looked throughly within his family, rather trying to guard them from outside threats. The dark irony. And the film was beautifully shot and well acted, and the suspense was intense throughout, not only trying to figure out what the threat was, but where it could potentially be coming from. Amazing! I do agree with Chris with poor marketing. The trailers seemed to show more of Travis’ nightmares, from his sickness, for the entirety. When actually the movie is more suspenseful than a gorefest. Thankfully I went into the movie mostly blind with low expectations, and I received the best reward.

I just saw it last night and I thought it was super powerful. I was lucky that I had not seen a single trailer of it. As you refer to The Witch and Babadook; those are two films I also adored and it's nice to have you put them in that list because yes, this film belongs there. They are doing something with horror that is unique, grips you and is not all about the jump scares but the experience. The unanswered questions kept me busy for the remainder of the night. Come on, it makes the dream sequences as obvious as it possibly cann, not only with the aspect ratio change. It shows very clearly, a shot of Travis laying in bed and drifting off to sleep, and then the screen slowly fades to black. If anyone was surprised that the scenes that come after that were dream sequences, then it's their own fault for paying no attention at all.

It's obvious that A24, which distributed the film, wanted to make some money off of it and decided to marketed as a horror film when they know that it really wasn't one. They know people, like myself and you Chris, will go see of horror film, whether critics praise the movie or not. That is why The Babadook got slammed by audiences because they though they were going to a creature horror film but instead, got a film about grief. That was due on how the film was marketed by the studio who release it and the same thing is happening here.

After reading a bunch of theories on here my favorite is the Travis is sleepwalking a lot, which is brought on by infection during the traumatic death of his grandfather. I think a key is that the movie period is shorter than it might seem and Travis is a big strong kid so the infection is slow to take him. Probably through daily interaction he infects the kid who sleep walks out of his room OR it doesn’t even happen - doesn’t matter. So I don’t care what Chris said about this not happening - Travis must have sleepwalked into the woods and found Stanley, might have even infected him! Again that doesn’t matter. What comes in the night is Travis’ infection taking root. Will’s awkward brother convo was a misdirect. The two dudes ambushing them was a misdirect. Stanley running off was a misdirect that just set up the further aggravation of Travis’ state of mind. I just felt like Travis was written to be way too fragile! My opinion. If he was a bit of a bad a$$ you could have changed almost nothing else and I’d have liked the character more. That being said the acting was really good in general. I just wish Travis was more likable. Good but not great movie, for me.

I found the editing choices to be fantastic. They really added to the tension and the paranoia - I was actually wondering for a while if I was imagining that aspect ratio tinkering, until the end where it's really obvious, but oh so effective. The unanswered questions also add to the film. As for "what was the dog barking at in the woods" - it's hidden, but in ONE shot, you can see, if you know where to look, the arm of someone hiding behind a tree towards the right of the screen. Just barely moving back into cover, like someone desperately trying to avoid detection. It sent chills down my spine.

I HATED this movie. I'm definitely biased because I've never been a fan of the "choose your own adventure" type of story (my OCD forces me to think about it nonstop for days after and it's impossible for me to turn it off) but this takes that idea to the most ridiculous extreme. What on earth is the purpose of bringing up so many subplots just to not even address them?? People are saying that we only know what the characters know, but we don't even know that much. The characters are clearly afraid of a physical danger at night, why would that not be explained to us? Why are we left with just a metaphor? The 'it' is fear and paranoia? I'm sorry, is heightened fear and paranoia at night some original idea all of a sudden? All this disconnect made me not care about the characters. Will's family dies at the end? Good. Will started it and they were all sick anyways. To me, this all just came across as incredibly lazy story telling. Critics are praising it for being a human story instead of a monster story, as if that's somehow unique. But as Chris said, this has been done over and over and over again. The only thing unique about it is the execution. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all about the psychological thriller (see They Look Like People for an actual good example) and I didn't even watch the trailer before watching this movie. But NOTHING new was addressed here. In fact, the story didn't even bother to address itself, so how am I, as an audience member, supposed to give a damn about it?

I was visiting a friend getting a creative writing degree at Concordia University and, on the basis that I'm a professionally published writer, I was invited to sit in on one of his classes. The professor was their writer-in-residence, a man who identified himself as a post-post-modernist, and whose best-known book had shreds of newspaper glued randomly over parts of the text to deliberately obscure it. Most of the students in the class had trouble assembling a coherent sentence, but they spent the entire class discussing whether an author who was gay was necessarily a gay author. Films like "It Comes at Night" remind me of that class. A genuinely thought-provoking film doesn't have to scream in my ear, "I AM THOUGHT-PROVOKING! LOOK AT ME, I'M PROVOKING DEEP THOUGHTS NOW!" The Matrix, for example, isn't afraid to be fun and to give us ground-breaking action scenes even while it's making existential arguments about destiny and free will. Likewise, films like Hitchcock's Psycho, Kubrick's The Shining, and Nolan's Inception are capable of being thought-provoking without having to signal that they're doing so by turning into a pretentious pastiche of Tarkovsky. I think if you have to tell people you're being clever you're probably not as clever as you think you are.

NoJusticeNoPeace I think that some directors and "clever" moviegoers mix "What the heck did I just watch?" And "That movie metaphor has me interpreting this film ten different ways" as "thought-provoking." They want to direct/watch a "complex" film, and don't care if it's confusing or nonsensical. They'll make something up to try and show the hidden meaning behind the film, or use the easy way out and refuse to comment on it. It's like trying to use twenty big words to tell a story that could've been told in ten.

They completely ignore the film as it is and therefore miss the emotions/ideas/questions it is trying to provoke. A film is not a math equation or crossword puzzle to be solved. On a final note I thought the film was well made and interesting, but not a masterpiece.

Yeah, I don't really know why people always need all the answers. Probably an overall lack of imagination as well as the clear mass state of confusion people are unaware they're suffering in. Humans aren't known for being very original or interesting though. C'est la vie.

I legitimately loved this film. I don't know if I will in the future, as this feels like something I might change my opinion on over time, but I loved its lack of answers. I also feel like those dreams may be more important than they seem.

Chris, I think you misunderstand the film completely. The film is about the psychological effects of constant fear. BEGIN SPOILERS: The film's protagonist is Travis. The the "It" of the title refers specifically to the nightmares and the terror of constant death. He finally succumbs to the constant fear after not only losing his grandfather but his dog, added to the sexual frustration that he was starting to feel towards Kim. He lied about going through the door as we saw in that flashback at the end, he was the one that killed everyone by going out and finding his dog. The only scene that doesn't really belong is the shootout between Paul, Will and the two men (father and son?). This is the only scene that isn't impacted by Travis and he has no role in. Even the drinking scene between Paul and Will could be part of something Travis is incorporating into his dreams as the film expertly establishes Travis does with sounds going on in reality as he sleeps, mixed in with relatively thin walls. END SPOILERS The film isn't perfect and I am furious that A24 took what was a great psychological drama and tried to market it as a horror film and if anything shows the serious problem of Rotten Tomatoes as marketing tool. That should be the takeaway from this. If I were marketing this, I'd probably go with the way Hitchcock marketed Psycho mixed with the original Cloverfield marketing; by leaving the "it" a complete mystery and not trying to play up the monster aspect. Why are the critics raving? And DO NOT RELEASE THIS AS A SUMMER FILM!!! This could've been a sleeper surprise in February or September. But alas, they did what they did and now I can only hope it finds a second chance on streaming.

When did he go out to find his dog? In the dream sequence? And if he did, then what was the point of that scene where the father shows everyone that he Is the only one that has the key to the exit? Ugh, just thinking about the many pointless scenes this movie had makes me regret seeing it even more. Nothing they said led anywhere, and they ended with such a cliché outcome at the end. Other than the cinematography, I can't possibly understand what the critics saw in this movie that was so freaking awesome.

So basically what the movie is, is the family in The Happening who boarded up their house and killed the two young boys trying to break in with a shotgun. It's from their POV perspectives, which is just 'fear from what they do not know,' therefore audience doesn't know either...they're just a bunch of confused people letting fear controlling them from stepping into the outside world. Which could be interesting, but sadly is a let down. I'm assuming 'It comes at night' is a metaphor for a 'man's fear of the unknown (darkness/night) haunting him relentlessly until he becomes mentally ill.' "Fear from uncertainty comes at night"

I've come to expect that a smart, yet quiet and ambivalent horror film will not satisfy mainstream audiences. I hope that this doesn't deter filmmakers and studios (especially A24) from making bold choices with their projects. I feel we are entering a new golden era of horror films and I'd hate to see it derailed because we have to cater to the masses.

Nicholas Brown I don't think that's true, it's mostly false advertising that I hate, and I know the ones who make the trailers are a different group of people, but they always try to sell you a different movie, that would upset anyone. and I mean, I like movies like the fast and the furious: Tokyo drift and suicide squad, but I also liked the bathroom, so I don't know what that says.

I loves this film and I've been loving so many horror films made in recent years. I think horror is finally being given the respect it deserves, being acknowledged for its ability to explore complicated themes in a horrifying way.

This is actually one of my favorite types of horror. The kind that plants a seed of paranoia and fear of the unknown in the beginning with a great payoff. My friend and I thought it was great. Depressing but great.

I did as you said. Stop the video, watched the movie and finished with the same trouble and questions.. don't know if I like it or not, the cinematography and actings are way too good but it leaves you with a sense of emptyness. great review.. the fatal flaw of the film is lack of resolution / payoff.. in the theater where I watched it, there were literally a couple "boos" at the end... there's a lot of quality work in it but it just fizzles, because of no satisfying ending...

Do we really need a "payoff" for every movie? I don't think so.. I'm tired of people trashing a film because it didn't end wrapped up with a pretty bow. There have been some amazing films that don't follow the conventional way of Hollywood filmmaking... with an obvious one being 2001 A Space Odyssey.

I disagree. The payoff IS the unknown. Is there anything more terrifying, really, than knowing that a deadly plague is outside your walls, you just killed/watched killed your grandpa, a child, a husband/wife, a dog, and your own son. You are/may be infected. Heck, Carpenter's The Thing bombed at the box office and he struggled to get work but it's now considered among the best horror sci fi ever. No "payoff" at the end there - same unanswered questions as to who is infected and what happens next.

Chris, I think I have it "Explained." The oil painting in the movie is "The Triumph of Death" painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted in 1562. It explains what "it" is that "comes in the night". The painting is a representation of death and the futility of humanity to fight back against it. Everything from dining families, to kings, or even to parents trying to protect their children from death are written all over it. The "infection" is the catalyst of death and the "thing" in the wilderness the dog barks at are all one and the same. It is death. The representation of death. Cancer, murder, starvation, you name it. The director lost his father, and was powerless to stop death, and now he has a perfect view of his own mortality, which is the fear of death. And what is the fear of death? A fear of going into the unknown. Is there an after life? Is it just an eternity of darkness that can't be experience by the dead? Which leads to the fear of regret. Did we do all we could in life before we go to face the unknown darkness of ceasing to exist? The unanswered questions left to you in the movie aren't meant to be solved. They're meant to build the walls of the ever encroaching fear of the certainty of death.

My boyfriend and I wanted to watch a horror movie. When we sat down to see this movie, he had watched the trailer and downloaded it without me. I honestly couldn't care less about what it was called. In the final scene, he angrily said 'that can't be it, give me something more!' I didn't understand him because I thought the movie was pretty good for what it was. And then I saw the title of the movie flash before the credits. Yes, that is some misleading shit indeed.
