I remember as a kid watching a family have a cistern installed. They actually built it on site. After they dug the hole they would they would pour a concrete floor, then they would build the walls with cement blocks and finally pour the concrete top. I also remember that every once and a while they would have to drain and re seal the blocks. What an improvement these solid tanks make.

I've watched every ODWM video, from day one, and this is the best yet. Outstanding storytelling, with solid instructional content. The drone shots; the fast-forward-digging, the leveling of the dirt and pit foundation with gravel, the choreography of the boom-work and tank placement; the aeriel overview; Hanna and Ty supervising; the professionalism of Key Precast; the importance of reserve water capacity --- EVERYTHING was done with flair and perfect execution.

That's what she said... I'm so jealous of your easy-digging shale. I can't go more than 18" without hitting boulders or ledge. The good news is the water is great, and we've never run out. In fact, I took the well cap off to check the level with a string and weight and the water was right there - three feet below the rim! Drought? What drought?

Your Schedule40 piping will settle at a different rate than the tank will, so when you bring one to the tank, use a coupling that can flex. On my septic tank outflow, I put a one foot piece of silicone truck radiator hose to correct a pipe that moved over the prior 25 years. This movement sheared the Schedule 40 connection and resulted in the whole contents of the lagoon coming out near the tank. So lesson learned. Too rigid an interface is asking for cracks and leaks long after the grade has been restored.

Wow! That I a BIG ONE! I am living in Colombia, S.A. All of the homes and buildings have cisterns most of the time they are on the roof so the house is gravity fed. Our house has 2 - 1500 liter molded tanks on the roof and when it rains heavy in the mountains the river that feed the town will be full of silt and over load the sediment ponds and filters so we can run out of water if it takes more then one day for the city to clean the system and get the water flowing again.

Good vid. We excavate em for a living. Most ive set on one septic system. Is five. 40,000 gallon concrete tanks. 64 trailer trucks to bring the tanks pieces to site. And 300 ton crane. Big hole i think we were. 100 feet long about 70 feet wide. And 16 feet deep. When there that big you gasket them and bolt them together side ways. Like a box culvert. Sometimes we will use fiberglass tanks. But there crazy expensive , i have photos of my deere 330 setting a 40,000 gallon fiberglass. Huge looking. Dont way much.

Good morning! Awoke to a drizzly morning here on the farm, and let OWTM entertain me during breakfast as the rain tapered off. I’m hoping it stays dry enough I can cut up and move the tree that fell on the fence. If not, there’s a couple of front wheel bearings that need the play replaced out of them. And a chainsaw that needs a couple of nicks filed out of the slot so my new chain fits. Like several other commenters, I was impressed by how close to arrival Mike let this excavation slide! Just shows that not only does Mike know what he’s doing, he knows how long it will take, and he’s good enough it doesn’t take very long. It was a more involved process that I had anticipated - I had thought the pile wouldn’t be so large it would have to be bailed farther away. I also hadn’t thought about the need to level the truck’s approach. Obviously Mike had. Impressive, and really clear from the drone view. By the way, Mike, your technique of dragging the top of a pile back before trying to lift was employed about a dozen times yesterday, on a topsoil pile, a pile of base rock, and a pile of crusher run. You taught this old dog a new trick, and I thank you for it. Hi Hunter! And Ty too!
@johnsadler8637

What must be a truism. If there’s a chainsaw running on a day chilly enough to need a jacket, it’s hanging on a limb or tractor or pickup nearby. 😄 I wish I was closer to you Woodmizer or one of its cousins. That dead snag I just cut off the fence has rot in the sapwood but the heartwood is about as solid as it gets. The butt log is still 20” at the base and probably 16” where it forked, after almost 40’ of dead straight. Those diameters are almost entirely heartwood. The logger working our place has already checked for other dead trees - the sawmills won’t mess with dead wood. Too bad.

Had the county run a drain pipe (for a new storm drain on the road) through my backyard to alleviate ice on the road. During the job a backhoe broke the leech tank for my septic system. It was the type of backhoe typically used for road work. They kept driving over it until it was crushed. Can't compare it to your tank because I stayed away from it because of the stink. The county replaced the tank.

I do not know if you want to use this but in Michigan we use P stone to fill cistern tanks summer 8 feet deep 6 feet wide and we’ve done many of them P stone doesn’t need to be compacted the compacts itself so we never compact that stuff and we use it to add underneath the concrete in a basement of a house that’s new anywhere that we need to have compaction we use P stone it’s cheap and it’s easy to use

Thanks for sharing this day, Mike. It looks very busy for you in the excavator and then managing the drone. P.S. I like the drone shots that are not directly down. when you have an angle on the scene I seem to be able to get the dimensions better, when directly down it confuses my sense of distance. It's a good thing you have the laser level. It did not look that low but then with the tank in place, I can finally see it. Have a Great Day.
