The roughness of the leading edge causes turbulance which causes the air to break into tumbling which servers as wheels allowing the general flow to easily pass by the vehicle thus reducing friction substantially.

Some of the other areas to cover over; Rear wheel wells, use fiberboard and tape to make them flat and smooth against the body panels. * Wiper blades * Hood and door gaps, fuel door cover * Window edges that are not flush * Remove the crossbar if it is deployed on the luggage rack Slightly overinflate the tires, remove the spare from the trunk (reduces weight), take out the floor carpet covers (weight)

That's what a manual transmission can do with a good engine, to beat the EPA rating by a wide margin. It is a shame that many car journalists believe that nowadays an automatic (CVT) transmissions can do better. I have a car with CVT and know exactly how it saves fuel: by cutting throttle input! A manual transmission should be way more efficient. This is the car I want to get when I am ready for next new car. Well, hope it still exists by that time. Sarah, you are a smart driver and your car will probably last forever!

I did this similar thing with my 2015 Chrysler 200C AWD with the 3.6L V6 Engine and the 9 Speed Automatic Transmission, and on a few different long distance drives I have managed to get over 45 MPG Consistently with my wife and our luggage in the car as well. We drove from the Chicago area up through Wisconsin, around to Michigan's UP and all the way across then down through Michigan. While driving from Wisconsin and through the UP I was averaging 46-48 MPG. Driving it from where we live now in Utah to Dallas TX, Through Southern UT and into NM I saw an average about 45 MPG. It's not rated anywhere near these numbers, but there is an art to getting that mileage out of a car.

And yes, at six years old I took notice of her short skirts. And the difference between the 37mpg factory rating and your 48mpg was totally due to the green tape!

Watkins Glen International Speedway and the annual Green Grand Prix the first Friday (I think it’s always a Friday) in April. About 40 cars, (hybrids, EVs, cars converted to run on used cooking oil, colleges’ car “creations”, diesels, and usually a couple Miata’s and some other “regular” cars). Two hours of driving the cars between speeds of 35 mph to 50 mph through all the curves, straightaways, and last year even the hairpin turns of the formula one section. Box lunch afterwards, motor cross time trials through the pylons in the parking lot in the afternoon and a nice banquet dinner and awards at the end of the afternoon. Always a great day. Severe wagon fetish. 😂😂😂 Same! I actually got phenomenal gas mileage driving in Colorado and the Rockies in my 1993 Impreza. The highest I ever got was 36 MPG which is crazy, but never less than 32. I usually get 27-31 in New England if I'm lucky. I figure the car was getting "less" air so the O2 sensor read rich and the ECU trimmed fuel. So I had less overall power I'm sure, but got better MPG. Effectively downsized my engine. Drag coefficient may have something to do with it as well. Loved the scientist segment! 🤣

The manufactures strip the cars down and use special extra hard compound low rolling resistance tires. Weight makes more difference than drag on most cars unless you are adding a bunch of accessories. Driving style trumps all.

In Australia they drive on 98 octane which is 20 cents per litre more than the regular 91 octane so it doesn't sound great. The car you drove also has a supercharger explaining why it's called the TSI.

Another good place to test this would be I-70 Eastbound in Colorado from the Eisenhower tunnel to Denver, a distance of nearly 60 miles downhill. I got 40 mpg going downhill, highest ever in my car. Going westbound, uphill, now thats a different story. Not exactly the pikes peak hill climb, but for an interstate, its pretty crazy going from Denver at 5,000 ft above sea level to Eisenhower tunnel, at 11,000 ft above sea level, in 50 miles. Thats about a 2.2% incline constantly for 50 miles. Eisenhower tunnel is the highest point on the interstate system. Obviously there are many other roads with crazier grades, but for an interstate with 70 mph speed limits, people could really fuck that up very easily. Going eastbound/downhill feels like your in a runaway car. I-70 between Denver and its end in Utah is, hands down, the most spectacular pieces of interstate in the country. Glenwood canyon is especially fun and beautiful to drive though!

If your going to start driving off road your going to have to break the habit of driving with your thumbs in the steering wheel. The tires can grab a rut or rock & spin the steering wheel so fast & hard it can break your fingers. Always drive with thumbs out of the steering wheel & tight against your hand so it can spin without you getting hurt. Good luck! love your vids!
