Great review. 30 years ago my wife and I were visiting my parents in AZ. Drove my Dad's '83 Rabbit up to Kitt Peak. That road hasn't changed from what I remember. A great drive and great little car. Thanks for the great flashback!

I had a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI when I was in the Army, loved that car. As for cyclists getting tickets, yes they can because they're supposed to adhere to the same laws as motor vehicles. It's all up to the Police Officer if he wants to go after cyclists. I have been pulled over for just being on the road because the cop didn't know the law himself. Had friends get pulled over for running Stop Signs, getting pulled over for speeding would be some serious bragging rights.

The best reviews on the tube 😊 So my concern about VW in general is reliability. From 2009 - 2013 I had three different VW’s all with various issues so I gave up and got a 2014 Honda Civic si and have had 0 issues.

Lug nut covers are just caps and the triple square means nothing, you just stick a tool in there and pull to reveal the regular lug bolt. It does have a boost gauge and more, just push the Car button again to cycle menus. The fake soundaktor gets old fast, I turned mine off. I love my GTI. Nice job on the review. You 2 are fun to watch.

bosoares there is no boost gauge when you cycle through the menu by pressing the car button, or any menu. I messed around with it for 10 or 15 minutes again today and nada, no gauge.

@@SarahnTunedWeird. My 2017 has it, maybe they removed it on the Rabbit edition. The downside of the boost gauge they added (at least to previous years) is that does not deduct atmospheric pressure so it shows like 33, 34 psi of boost which is much more than it actually has. They should have done the math and displayed just the right amount.

The digital boost gauge is stupid anyway. It reads like 37 psi at half throttle. Lol. I put a proper boost gauge in that's tapped into the intake manifold.

As always, your review rocked. When the original GTI came out in 1983, it was a bright spot during what I call the era of performance purgatory. Going 50 in the original felt like you were going at least 80 Overall I give both of you 2 thumbs up -WAY UP.

Much appreciated comments about the DSG. I began driving in 1963...(not a misprint) and from then until 2012 I always had at least one car in my garage with a manual transmission. When I bought a GTI in 2012 my wife pleaded with me to get an AT so she could drive it occasionally on a commute from hell in Seattle traffic. I relented and bought a DSG equipped GTI. When I traded it in 2018 for another GTI I didn't hesitate. The DSG provides a perfect compromise....Or better said it provides the best of both worlds. I drive it in manual mode most of the time, using the paddle shifters to select a gear. When I'm stuck in traffic moving two to twenty mph in gridlocked freeway traffic I simply let the "automated manual" (It's not actually an AT in the traditional slushbox sense) DSG do it job. It shifts more quickly and positively than any human being can accomplish. And the only "engagement" I lack is that the DSG automatically shifts to first gear when I come to a stop. It's not a big sacrifice.

And it’s cool they still offer a manual. Personally, I’d never sacrifice a few extra tenths of a seconds over a manual. Definitely not worth it to me.

My best friend made me follow him up that road the day after I got my motorcycle license...and there was patch ice near the top! I've also driven my old 2002.5 Jetta GLI up that road with an unofficial Tucson VW club I used to hang with. I think it's a little bit more fun than going up Mt. Lemmon, mostly because there's less traffic. Rabbit GTI with a manual checks all the boxes and is on my short list for my next fun car (along with the Veloster N). Great video as always, makes me miss Tucson!

I have a Silverado with carpet inner fender wells. I do a lot of Offroad driving. I find them to be especially easy to clean also mud is easy to remove. It also does not leave that black stained faded look behind. Great video thx.

3:07 it does have a G meter and boost gauge. You can also monitor oil temps and trans temps there. It's under the performance page. If you keep pushing the Car button it will come up and then you can swipe up/down to change the readouts :)

I remember that too!! My dad had Rabbits too back in the day. I loved the old commercial for the GTI it showed it jumping over a little hill. And the music was the Beach Boys Little GTO but, changed to Little GTI. I also remember seeing the cars on racetracks with the rear tire lifting during hard turns. Definitely cool cars for a time when performance was a 200 hp in a really heavy car. Thanks for bringing back those memories.

Those triple square " lug studs " are just caps that are slipped on over the lug bolts to cover them there's a special pick tool where the jack is to take them off. Those cars actually also have digital boost gauges and even a digital g-force meter on the same screen of the infotainment. Also putting an aftermarket exhaust on these cars really opens up the DSG fart sounds.

A few years ago, I was trying to decide which hot hatch would be the best daily driver, and I don’t regret getting my ‘15 MK7 GTI. It’s a 2 door (which they discontinued) in Reflex Silver. I have a 6 speed DSG in mine which is shifts super smooth still even though I’m running a Stage 1 Cobb tune. I’m guessing it makes around 240ish crank hp and around 300lbs feet torque. It’s a great car and I plan to keep it until I have to get rid of it. It never fails to make me smile😊.

Sarah, great review. The Triple Square on the wheels are just plastic caps, there are 17mm wheel bolts under them. There are Triple Squares holding the rear calliper carriers on though, which are done up FT

Kitt Peak is awesome!! We did the night tour a few years back. You have to do it!! At the end of the program, you have to leave with your lights off until about half way down that road (in the dark !). They provide a lead vehicle for you to follow They don't want any stray light disrupting observations/ studies after sunset. Cars with running lights that stay on have manila folders taped over the headlights. Great video and review!

The GTI does have a digital boost gauge and g meter. You have to push the “Car” button a few times and it should pop up. You can also customized which gauge you want to be seen in the center screen

The gti is the best all round vehicle at an affordable price, that's why it has a eco meter and also a digital boost gauge with g meter and coolant/oil gauge. Just mess with the car info button and it pops up on the radio screen.

Whaaaaaaat? Sarah you are I think the one and only car channel or review to talk about the Eco or "Blue" Trainer feature. Yeah for the DSG it really makes zero since to have that but for manual transmissions it does show the optimal shift points for maximum fuel savings. Kinda useful for a newer driver I think. I noticed it on my new 2019 Mk7 Jetta S with the 6 speed manual but no reviewer ever saw that till now. Congrats you win! Not sure what but you did.

This is such a fun car! Unfortunately for me and around 100 others, this car has been a nightmare. A growing number of these 2019's have a pretty bad stalling problem. There is a reddit thread and videos popping up on youtube of it happening. My GTI is in back at the dealer for round 3. The first 2 attempts to fix the problem did not work.

One thing I PARTICULARLY appreciate in this review is that Sarah not only mentions the horse power rating of the engine at a precise RPM, but also the peak torque figure at a precise RPM, because today, even with the guys in The Grand Tour, torque figures are mentioned but NEVER at what RPM it's peak is developed. And that info is even more important today than days of OHV, and I'm surprised that engine produces it's peak torque at ~1500 RPM, that can do a LOT better in the real world than u'r run of the mill OHC engine today delivering it's peak torque in the high 5000 or so ...
