This may be my favorite Trail Recon video! First, it’s an area where I’ve hiked if that was near Corte Madera. The lookout tower reminds me of the one on Lyons Peak as well as Edward Abbey and his book, Desert Solitaire. Second, your advice for folks new to this recreation was well considered and well delivered. Good, practical stuff.

We were living in Poway in 2003 and 2007 and remember the Cedar and Witch Creek fires well. In 2003, Jordan went as a fireman for Halloween and got more candy than his brothers trick or treating!

Great video! Hot tip for the people watching and thinking about running those trails you just did. The top 1/2 is mellow and fun. Great views and not super challenging. The bottom 1/2… plan on paint damage and ground clearance issues unless you have a decently upgraded rig. I’ve done it in a stock Chevy Colorado zr2 and my paint was never the same. Started it in my Jeep gladiator Mojave and turned back ( mainly to save the paint ). The top 1/2 to the fork below the fire lookout is where you’ll want to stop if you like your paint job :).

I'm just getting into off-roading and overlanding. This was the first place I went to. I was able to drive up to the lookout and also was able to talk with the lookout guy. The hike to Corte Madre's peak is amazing. Last time I was there we were treated to around a dozen golden eagles flying about who nest in the stone cliffs. Did Corral Canyon with my dad in his 2004 Land Rover Defender a few years back, but we had to turn around halfway after we encountered over heating issues. Still a great time and a fun trail with awesome views. Enjoyed your video.

Your part about not being afraid to be cautious was on point. In my early days I nearly got myself in trouble a few times back in the 90s with my 72 Blazer. Even years later I have a couple digs in my Ramcharger because I miss judged some spots. I’d add be sure to have a spotter you trust and don’t be afraid to tell others who you want spotting. Our last big trip to Moab I had a spot that four different people were shouting instructions. I finally had to turn it off and give them what I wanted and who.

Thank you! Modifications are great, but Jeeps are pretty capable right out of the box. Definitely take your time and be thoughtful about the modifications so you don't overbuild (been there, done that), going with needs first, wants second.

Love your videos. Rode RZRs for years and just recently transitioned last year to a stock 2022 Gladiator Rubicon as my only off roader and you definitely learn what you want (or may need) to add later when you ride your vehicle in stock configuration for a while. Added clearance (2" lift and 35's) and a new bumper with a winch will likely be all I want on that truck since it is a daily driver also and I plan to eventually get a used Wrangler at some point as my trail rig.

I remember driving in Corral Canyon OHV with my dad many years ago in the early to late 2000s and the fire watch tower road used to be completely dirt. Along with the entire drive up to the staging area. It was more fun back then. I haven't been back in a very long time. The last time my dad and I went we visited the Fire Watcher in the tower and learned a lot. That part was cool.

Thanks for this and the Rattlesnake video as they helped me focus on my 2022 Willys Sport build; which is still OEM at this point. It hit me during these videos that the parts of your channel that my wife & I like the most is “once” you’re at camp. Either cooking as a couple or with Marcos. The driving, especially off road, is just a bother we endure to get to a remote camp. I realized watching these last two videos that I’d never just spend a day driving my Jeep around in the dirt. If there is no camping; I’d rather just play golf for the afternoon. Thus I now know that my stock Willys Edition with its LSD is plenty of Jeep for my needs; what I need to be doing is things like dual batteries, long range gas tanks and the Goose Gear Kitchen. Start with your convenient Silver Ground Tent and either upgrade to an RTT or the Ursa Minor. The only tire, wheels, gearing etc. might be adjustable shocks in the back to level the Jeep when fully packed with camping gear. THANKS, these recent videos really helped me focus in on what I really WANT to be doing with my Jeep. P.S. Years ago we lived in San Diego and we never once went past that nice restaurant up in Alpine except on our drives home to New Mexico; everyone in the 80’s was always going to the OHV Dunes and I never had any interest. I don’t know how I missed this, I’ve been kinda frustrated with my Jeep because there is soo much that I supposedly “need” to do to it BEFORE I can go camping. When in reality all those upgrades are if your interested in driving off road not camping. That seems so obvious but I totally missed it. LOL!

Best describe my offroad style as "opposite-Brad". Began offroad exploring with my ole 2nd or 3rd hand Ford Pinto Wagon. Carried a pair of snow chains and that was it. Later over the years bought various new 4x4 rigs, just hit the trails and drove. Rarely if ever looked at their manuals. Punctured a sidewall and had to review its jack instructions to change out the spare. One flat in my life. Though probably hundreds of bicycle flats. I only carry bicycle repair tools and a come-along (used once to get out of a muddy ditch in Baja). I agree with Brad's sound advice, but will be the day I carry all that gear, just tow a spare Jeep, hehe.

Nice video Brad’s I was part of the of the group who made the original trails in Coral Canyon back in the very early 1980s. We literally turned the jeeps and drove right through the Manzanita and we hit a boulder. We made a turn after we did this and made a few trails, the ranger brought the prisoners up and cut the trails for us this was with the Tierra Del Sol four wheel Drive club.

I have ridden dirt bikes all over the Corral Canyon trails. It was literally one of the toughest areas I have ever experienced. This video just brought back a ton of memories. It was hard on a bike, can't imagine in a 4WD. We even got to meet the smoke watcher several times. He was very cool. This was back in the eighties and early 90's. Love your videos!

Me and my group took Los Pinos to Espinoza a few months ago. Got like a .2 mile into Espinosa and had to turn around! Lol Trail had HUGE boulders and super deep ruts. Getting up there was fun. We were so off camber you could literally touch the ground if u put your hand out the window lol

I miss these types of videos! Reminds me of when you first started your channel. I live about 30 minutes from corral caynon. Espinosa is definitely an easy trail that can be done in a stock jeep. I like to do it in reverse and drive up the "waterfall." You should check out sidewinder trail out there. Nothing crazy. I consider it intermediate. But definitely has some interesting spots on it.

We have several fire lookouts back in my home town area of Washington State in the Okanogan National Forest. Unfortunately there are only 7 left in an area that used to have nearly 30! Ah, poison oak! It is just everywhere in CA. One time back at the office the itch was driving my bonkers. In desperation I looked around our lunchroom kitchen for anything which might bring some relief. The solution FOR ME ( your mileage might vary etc.) was Windex. Works like a charm, stops the itch dead in its tracks and even has reduced my sensitivity. I just spray it on the itch, rub it in well, let sit for 10 minutes and then rinse off with water. And yes, I am exposed to poison oak regularly just hiking, or even in one area of my forested yard.

I walked through poison oak as a little kid at my Maternal Grandpa’s yard in Grants Pass, Oregon and then rode my mountain bike through in college while attending Oregon State. I rinsed the oil off with my water bottle mountain biking but I don’t remember any oil as a kid. Didn’t get any ranch either time. Still not going to press my luck in the future.

Sidewinder and gunslinger (including the off shoots) will be good trails for you to do but the Bronco peak connector is probably too much unless you are cool with possible body damage. I have done all the trails in the area so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I remember the first time I ever went offroading, it was in my 2004 Dodge Dakota quad cab 4x4. in the Tillamook state forest I did not over due it I stuck to the easy trails, tried a medium trail and it did great on that one. After a couple years of taking it on those trails and taking it on the beach alot, the transfer case gave out. That was the only thing that "broke" on it.

Thanks for another great trip down memory lane! I don't think I've ever been on any of the roads you travel in this video, but I may have done some paragliding not far from that big rock at a place called Blossom Valley. I think the rock is known as El Cap, after El Capitan up in Yosemite, but perhaps there are more than one such big chunks of granite in the area. So some of those fire lookouts are manned all year. The two I've hiked to in my area, Black Mountain and Tahquitz Peak on Mt San Jacinto have not been manned the multiple times I've been to them. I did bump into a hiker along the Black Mountain trail who said she was a volunteer fire watch at that tower, but only during certain months of the year. Speaking of Tahquitz Peak, the climbing rock in your video sure looks like a twin to Suicide Rock across the canyon from Tahquitz Peak and nearby Tahquitz/Lily Rock near Idyllwild! A not so fond memory was the run-in I had with poison oak as a high school freshman. That was a miserable and itchy two or three weeks! I remain Jeepless, but she is still on order, and was listed as "E" on the trackers, in production for almost two months now. I was hoping to drive it to my ship's reunion next month, but it looks like that won't be in the cards. Keep 'em coming!

I did a video a few years ago about filming and unfortunately, it didn't perform very well. But there are several great channels out there that are all about how to shoot, edit, and make great videos. I'd recommend finding ones you like and watching those to learn about filming. That's how I learned.
