Depends on the tank; depends on the fish, depends on the amount of fish, and a combination of all 3 of those. 30% water change every week with a filter clean is the gold standard. But if you have plants and low bio mass in a giant tank suddenly it becomes a matter of maintenance like you said. This being said I love keeping up my 15 tanks and I may get called crazy or a hoarded. But I have THE best view of the most impressive fresh water fish in 100 miles of me. Test kits are a must! Oh look! I gotta clean some algae today and my 55 gallon! Love it as long as they do and we, my fish and I seem to get along fairly well! Great refreshers and always a pleasure to look at some of your fish too! Love you guys! Stay happy and healthy my friends! 😊❤

I wish i could show you a photo of my 30 gallon. I never have to clean the glass. I do 25 percent water change once a month or less. I siphon the gravel about every 3 months or so. And it's crystal clear all the time. Plants are healthy and so are all the fish.

Weekly maintenance on a routine was necessary as a new fish keeper. After 2 years, I've been able to learn my aquariums and what they need and when. I have several tanks and they do not all need the same things at the same time. It's a matter for me of daily attention to their needs.

We do 30% water changes every week, then every other week filter media rinses and substrate vacuuming, plant pruning and algae scraping are done as needed basically
@lazarosalazar3366Ай бұрын
The way you feel after a long shower is the way fish feel after a 50%+ water change. You could see it in their behavior afterward. They will adapt to water parameters. However, fresh water is best.

spent years dealing with endless diatoms and even some black beard algae in my 120 bichir/severum tank, my water changes was every sunday scrubbing algae off the glass and wood, as soon as i stopped doing water changes every week and instead every 3-4 weeks everything changed for the better, I also added easy plants like java fern, anubias, water sprite, water lettuce and that seemed to take care of all the algae i had including the dreaded black beard algae (did a week long blackout before adding plants to weaken the black beard algae)

My 240 gallon planted community aquarium with 76 fish gets routine 50% water changes every other weekend but I could easily get away with doing it once a month. I only vacuum the gravel in some little spots instead of the whole entire bottom of the tank, but different spots each time. As for algae, I just use the magnet scrubber on the front glass and that’s it. I let it grow on the sides and back glass. It doesn’t grow that fast so I only have to scrub the front glass like once every 10 days or so when I first start to see that little hint of algae on the front glass.

If your monitoring the GH and KH do you think its ok to top off your aquarium daily with distilled water. Still doing your weekly water change with regular water?

I have a 60gal tank with a few cichlids and a couple catfish in it. I generally do nothing other than top it off each week. But I do have a HOB filter, a DIY filter box and, a HUGE pothos feeding on the tank. If that pothos dies, then I will have a problem.

Hey, been fishkeeping for a few years (started when I won a goldfish at a local fair and was promised that the 2litres of water in the container with him was enough for him for his whole life) and have been loving the hobby ever since. However, recently I got a nanotank that I am trying to do a planted tank with some cherry shrimp (still to come once tank is ready) but am unsure how maintenance of a planted tank works. Do I still gravel-vac the substrate? What to do about algae?

I work 6/7 12hr days....this is why I like nano fish.... In my 20 long I have five diamond tetras and 15 ember tetras..... My 36 bow tank, I want to fill it with just green neons, my 6.5 bookshelf, one betta, and 6 chili raspbiras.....Lower bio load for me means I can go longer with cleaning

If your tank is low stocking and stuffed full of fast growing stem plants and have floating plants to go with them with a natural clean up crew e.g scuds and snails then technically the only water you'll ever have to mess with is small evaporation top offs im someone who believes mulm and substrate detritus adds to a natural look of which we would all see in our respective rivers and lakes wherever in the world we live as long as you (fishkeeper) has a test kit that reads well and you test your tank's vital stats daily and nitrate isn't probably north of 40ppm then you are absolutely fine but if you have plants like elodea and vallisneria in decent quantities then your nitrogen cycle compounds like ammonia and nitrite get used up and consumed by plant life all in all whichever side of the fence your on a reliable test kit and a bottle of seachem prime or similar brands are a must it really all depends on your set up loads of fish in a 20 gallon with no plants and a daily feeding regime then scrap everything i've just said and listen to videos like this and similar if your interested in the other method then father fish and LBR aquatics are great channels to soak up information and gain knowledge

Chock it full of plants and shrimp and you’ll barely have to touch it. I maybe do a 25% water every month, if that on my 100L and it’s doing great. The less I get my hands wet the better, so I just let the shrimp and snails deal with any algae.
