Watch all the videos. Kevin acknowledges he's aware of the risks. He does not take his relationship with these animals for granted and does not assume that everything is the same every day. I find Kevin to be marvelously intuitive and he gives his heart & soul to these animals. That says a lot for him. We should all be so lucky to have something we care so passionately about.

@@chrisparker7214 as far as I'm aware is that he took 3 lions for a walk and that one lion chased an impala, eventually encountering the 22-year-old woman at least 1.2 miles away. Kevin said he followed procedure before the weekly excursion by assessing the area for other "big five" animals, a designation that includes rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion, and sending out a notification that he was walking with lions. @@nadstengco2591 You keep posting this but have you actually read it? Exactly whose point are you trying to prove? According to your article, Megan "had been on the grounds to accompany a friend who was conducting an interview with the manager of the sanctuary’s associated Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve, a tented camp that is popular with tourists." A tented camp popular with tourists, in other words not somewhere she shouldn't have been. That's where she was when the attack occurred, which according to Richardson happened because a lioness broke off from one of his so-called enrichment walks to chase an impala. Eventually it reached the area Megan was in. This obviously means the "popular with tourists" area has no fencing if the lioness was able to reach her. Is it Megan's fault there was no fencing when she thought she was in a tourist zone? It rather sounds to me like a ludicrous safety oversight that cost a young woman her life. Park staff are responsible for the location of the animals, not the tourists.

The interviewer? He's just asking the questions. If anyone needs a tutorial on animal behaviour, I'd point a finger at a sliver of Kevin's fan base. He goes out of his way to warn people of the dangers inherent in anthropomorphising wild animals. But the comments sections under his channel's uploads still ring loud with anthropomorphism. I'm not sure that people realise what he is talking about when he raises the issue. I understand that it must be hard for some people to see a human interacting with wild animals and not fall prey to the grossly flawed notion that they're just big ol' cats that you're safe from if you behave respectfully. It's harder still when you consider that the producers of natural history and wildlife content use anthropomorphism as part of their hook into the narrative. Even the BBC Natural History Unit is guilty of anthropomorphism, with the notable exception of David Attenborough.

@@NxDoyle You are totally correct. However I am soo guilty of anthropomorphism myself but not fooling myself into believing wild animals wont injure or kill me if I break boundaries etc more in an emotional way I relate all animals to us humans behaviour. @helloworld4284

I think as @Nx Doyle has mentioned, it is fair that the interviewer asks the question about what happens to the lion, because that is something we as the audience would probably be wondering. Like, typically, domestic animals or wild animals living in captivity are euthanized if they kill a human being, so I think it's a good question to wonder how this was addressed. As for the way the question was phrased, I think the interviewer was trying to be respectful to Kevin's relationship with the lions and the the difficult situation.

Rules are present to protect animals and humans from being injured or killed. My heart goes out to the family of the person who was killed and my heart goes out you and your staff. I love how you look at choices in life. Healing happens beginning with the mind and heart. You are correct in saying we must look at life as a blessing (my word not yours) because every hour we live is by Grace. You are correct in that humans have choices to make when healing. There’s a lot of misinformation in the comments..this DID happen at Kevin’s sanctuary; the lion involved was Ndira. The proper warning had been posted that Kevin was out with his lions on one of their enrichment walks in the enrichment walk area of the park. The female journalist who was visiting, for an unknown reason, got out of her her car at the EW area while Kevin’s was out. Ndira broke away chasing an impala and came upon the female human and redirected her energy onto the human. Kevin ran up behind them and came to the site and tried to give emergency aid; meanwhile, Ndira seemed to ‘come to’ and appeared distressed- she NEVER ATE the human, only redirected her energy. There was talk for a while from the authorities about euthanizing Ndira; I think what saved her was the fact that she didn’t eat, but mauled the individual. Once a lion ‘gets a taste’ for humans it is difficult to save them. I feel sympathy for the woman and her family, but I do feel that this tragic situation could have been prevented by paying attention to the notices. Edit: I have added a link to a sweet video of Ndira living happily with her Pride of Thor, Charlie, Ndira, Lola,, Jubari and Neige. He goes through a nice explanation of each on of their personalities and it’s lovely to see captive lions able to have a good time for a small while. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHSaZ2SGop6qfac

Your story is mostly correct, except for the girl wasn't a journalist. She was a college student, conducting an interview with Kevin's park manager for an assignment she was doing. She also brought a friend with her. After this interview was over, instead of getting into the car and leaving right away, like they should have. Instead the two girls decided to take some pictures before leaving. And this is when Ndira came upon the two girls and mauled her friend to death.

The woman was not a guest at the tented area, she was accompanying her friend. Kevin Richards sent out a notification that he was walking 3 lions and these women were outside of their car taking photos. During the walk one of the lioness saw an impala and began chasing it. The lioness had chased the impala for over 2km before encountering the woman. a reporter got out of a car and walked on her own. The lion was chasing an impala. Then diverted the attention to her and mauled her a bit. without eating or anything. Kevin reached out to them and tried to help but it was too late for her. The lion was not comfortable with the whole situation, but has since been normal next to all including Kevin. Just a human mis-behavior thing quickly put to check by nature. All are clearly instructed to stay inside the car for a reason.

Either way, she was killed when a lioness in RIchard's care took off from a walk with him, chasing down an impala. On the way, finding this woman. The rest is uninformed gossip and social media (unfortunate IMO) usual blame game. ironically @didyuknow having one of the most "off" versions. and some article being referred to over and again, that sites no sources & blames Kevin. I personally know that I know nothing and respect that Kevin has the right to keep the situation between who is involved and affected and as for the the rest of us, really not our business to get up in his. Accidents with domesticated animals happen daily. There's no reason to expect that an accident with a wild animal will not occur given the right circumstances. I deal with large, powerful animals daily. I've also been severely injured by those animals during my career working with them. The fact they are domesticated versus wild has never had any bearing on their behaviour. It's my behaviour that dictates what they will & won't do to me or someone else. Even a pet dog or cat raised from a baby can be as unpredictable & dangerous as any lion if disrespected or handled incorrectly. The pet dog can inflict deadly wounds & they do everyday around the world. I have to agree with Kevin regarding responsibility.for the incident. It's always human error. If one is in the proximity of a wild predator like lion, even tame ones like Kevin's lions, one should expect there's a chance of being killed. Even tame lions will still behave like a lions. The human must modify their behaviour to avoid being seen as prey. The rules must be followed to the letter when dealing with any animal capable of killing u w/ease & one must never deviate.

I don't particularly like the term "maul" when relating to an apex predator larger than a Lynx - and a measly human on the receiving end of His / Her attack. A 10-kg lynx will maul a human. A Lion / Tiger /Jaguar, even a 40kg Leopard or a Puma doesn't "maul" a human, but handily breaks one in two. Or snaps the neck / vertebrae.

Dee Did you even read the article. The fact that the girls didn’t “break rules” and “wandered off into the Enrichment walk areas and leave their vehicles” but were killed in the luxury bush compound which is co-owned by Richardson and is NOT fenced, is FACTUAL INFORMATION. It is also FACT that the Prince of Monaco co purchased the lions and had Richardson, in effect, train them so that money could be made. Primarily from a film that was being shot at the time f Megan’s tragic death. These are FACTS.

@@DeeFightingDreamer You're not very good at reading people's body language are you? Kevin knows he's responsible for this, you can tell from his demeanor, & that's why he doesn't want to talk about it & the thing that really irks me about this is that he doesn't even have the decency to call her by her name which was Megan incidentally & Megan has been treated by the sycophants of Kevin in this comment section as though she is a pos & deserved it & who cares about this stupid girl & so on, it's sickening. Imagine that was one of your loved ones.

I've watched the behaviour of tourists around Kevin and they seem to get lulled into a false sense of security, thinking that maybe they too can cuddle with the cats. This incident happened on the luxury bush camp which is unfenced. In several walks we see Kevin walking lions close to camp, hoping the lions wont stop to investigate. Im sorry but these unfenced camps, regardless of the income they bring in from rich tourists looking for a thrill to be near wildlife needs to stop. Put the camps outside the reserve and restrict tourists to windowed jeep safaris. The lions, elephants etc, should not have to come across a "hotel" on their daily walks.

However, Kevin also makes a point to send out a message to ALL of his staff to alert ALL of the guests that he is walking with the lions, so presumably the staff would clear the area out. It would be a severe liability on his part to take them walking, knowing there could be people at a specific site. The insurance alone wouldn't allow that. The issue was one of miscommunication or of the visitors not abiding by the rules and regulations. One of the two. He does not take his cats walking where other people are going to be visiting. He's not a fool. Someone either didn't warn the visitors soon enough or didn't realize they were at a specific location in order to warn them. Kevin communicates through radio to all of his staff during lion walks. When he hopes the lions don't investigate the lodge areas, presumably it's because they could cause damage to the property, not because he fears there could be people there. He KNOWS the lions would not take well to strangers, so he wouldn't walk them all willy nilly, wherever he wanted. Someone just didn't get the message and pass it along to the visitors. Those areas are supposed to be clear during lion walks and his staff know that. Tragically, someone dropped the ball. When you go into a sanctuary like that, you accept certain risks. It's not a zoo. The animals are not in cages and will never be in cages. So, if you want total security, you visit a zoo. If you want to experience the wild as it is, you have to accept the risks that go along with it. On top of that, he has committed himself to caring for these animals until the end of their lives. That requires money. A lot of money. KZbin alone won't suffice. Hence the "hotel", as you put it. By the way, have you ever actually been there? It's not a hotel by any means, nor is it meant to be. It's a necessary source of income.

Just like your family , you see their individual behaviours , the same with our dogs you learn to see the signs from the young pups , if older you pay more attention to the surrounding and the reactions . To live and learn with the big cats you have to be on the ball, Kevin's experience makes him look so chill we as watchers don't maybe see how he takes them in . But he is, he has too. If you think how a horse with no teeth , no claws, you have to be aware of their body and where your body is, you have to be aware , that's one of the key aspects, aswell as having the biggest bravest heart to do what he does. I use dogs and horses as a simple example but I guess it's like getting in the ocean with 3 great whites ?? It's your inner vibrations that say so much that words could never , they don't understand our words but the vibrations on how that word is possibly said and put forward to them??

He's raised most of them from cubs, so they view him as part of their herd - he also recognizes their behaviours, and knows when they are going to react negatively. It doesn't always stop him from getting hurt - as someone mentioned, he has been bitten before, but it has stopped him from being mauled/killed.

Kevin is correct 100% not to let visitors inside where his beloved lions are. These lions are wild animals with the only difference that these beautiful lions (whom I love) know Kevin and respect him as well as Kevin loves and respects them. Kevin’s lions have been with him for a very long time and they know who Kevin is. Having said that, tourists, visitors etc. should stay away from wild animals unless these animals know you very well and that means having raised these creatures from birth. Love your lions Kevin, they are magnificent and majestic creatures who love and respect you very much. And they need you for sure. God bless Kevin for his work with the lions and for bringing awareness about these great creatures! They are not evil nor monsters they are lions doing what lions do. Magnificent job Kevin and his staff do! Awesome. I applaud you all! 👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

DS Rai the young lady was called Megan van der Zwan. She was just 22 when she was attacked by a lion and mauled to death. She was accompanying her friend that day who was interviewing a manager at Kevin Richardson’s as part of a project. After they had completed the interview they walked from the office to their car which was parked outside. The lions were on a walk in another adjacent reserve (this was their regular enrichment walk with an experienced member of staff and other staff were aware they were out walking some distance away) and one ran off and got over a mile away before arriving at the camp car park and mauling Megan to death in front of her friend. A statement was released by KR saying “the women were not to blame and they did not believe they were irresponsible in any way” but sadly many fans blamed the woman after wrong information was given many at the time and again in these comments attacked Megan and her friend. Her family and friends are devastated by their loss. The nastiness and lack of empathy from many KR fans has been insurmountable. kokolevel.com/2018/03/megan-van-der-zwan-battered-to-death-by-a-lion-in-south-africa/

Two college kids were there, one to interview one of Kevin's staff, the other was a friend accompanying the other. There were notices to make people aware that Kevin was taking the lions out for the walk, but after the interview, the college kids apparently ignored this and got out of their car to take pictures before they left and presumably after they had left the company of the person they were interviewing as they would have again, presumably told them to stay the hell in their car - the lion took off after an impala but redirected at one of the college girls and mauled her to death. Kevin tried to give aid to her when he arrived on the scene, and the lion did not actually eat the girl (which is why the lioness did not get put down), but it was too late to save her.

ForCryinOutLoud O'Neill Megan was not a “college kid” she had completed her degree at Pretoria University but sadly didn’t get to attend her graduation. Her twin brother Mathew collected it on her behalf. There were not written signs up. Notifications were verbal. Below taken from a report at the time. Van der Zwan and her friend came to Richardson’s sanctuary for some sort of school project. They interviewed the manager of the bush camp. Richardson knew the young women were there, and had spoken to them that morning. Richardson had already taken one set of lions off the grounds of his sanctuary, located on the Welgedacht reserve, at the edge of the Dinokeng Game Reserve, hauling them by truck out onto the DGR (and into the territory of established wild lions) so he could walk with them. While the two young women were still at the sanctuary, Richardson decided to take out a second set of lions, trucking them onto the DGR, and releasing them to roam freely. The young women were inside the fenced and gated bush camp-which regularly hosts tourists for visits and overnight stays, and is considered safe to walk around in, due to the fences and gates-but apparently for reasons unknown the gate to the bush camp was standing open. After concluding their interview with the camp’s manager, the young women exited the offices, and walked toward their vehicle where it was parked, pausing en route so they could take photos of the area. While taking photos, the two women were ambushed from behind by a lioness who had apparently entered the camp through the open gate. Megan van der Zwan suffered the full attention of the lioness, and was fatally mauled as her friend watched on in horror.

@@yvettedaly9559 So how do you know Kevin spoke to these girls that morning? How do you know Kevin knew these girls were still there when he released his lions? How do you know some gate was open? And you dont know how long those girls were taking pictures where they werent suppose to be. I think you made up your own story. This was Kevin's reserve where this happened. Where the wild lands of Africa have no boundaries of protection. This happened outside of Kevins sanctuary, but on his property. Kevin has 3200 acres of land and away from his sanctuary. All the wild animals of Africa run free. If it wasn't Kevin's lions who did this, it could have been a wild lion who saw these girls. Where Kevin has his office is in wild territory. None of his volunteeres or the public wanders around there. It's off limits because of the dangers. A building and a lot for cars. Which you go in right away and go out right away. These girls should know that away from the city, that their country and land is home to the wild animals of Africa. Play at your own risk.

@out of time. As mentioned the information is from a report at the time. Investigation completed and report done. After the first paragraph it is not my words. Have you ever been to the camp where visitors stay when visiting Kevin’s, have you been to a game reserve or even South Africa. You’ve also read things into the report that aren’t there. It doesn’t mention if Kevin knew the girls were there or not when he was on the walk. The gate is on the car park beside the office. They were inside that. I can assure you that all the wild animals in Africa sadly don’t run free. Kevin’s lions are kept in one of 15 enclosures with sleeping areas. They were taken out in rotation to walk to relieve boredom on the adjacent fenced Dinokeng reserve which has wild lions on it but they are fenced. It was one of Kevin’s lions that did this and she has been named on other threads on these videos. It was not the lions fault it just saw the chance to run free for a change. The reserve that Kevin has is in total 1300 hectares. It is only 30 minutes from where Megan lived in Pretoria. You can visit as a day visitor or stay over/pay to volunteer. When you drive there you leave your car in the fenced car park at the office/reception. You would not expect to be attacked here and staff and visitors come and go in this area all the time. Read the sanctuary page and check the information, read the reports online. It’s a tragedy for all involved and shouldn’t have happened. Please to not continue to disrespect Megan’s memory and her family and friends by trying to blame her. Kevin said they did nothing wrong so please accept that and stop the misinformation.

“Alex was working with one of our husbandry teams cleaning a lion enclosure, when a lion who had been locked into a separate holding enclosure somehow managed to enter the enclosure in which our team was working and killed Alex,” the statement said, adding that “no other humans were injured.” “When our husbandry teams clean big cat enclosures they follow a safety protocol that involves moving the cats into a separate space and securing them before humans enter the adjacent space. The specifics of what happened are still under investigation,” the statement continued.
