I'm from India ...I too have heard stories of pisach from my father on how grandmother and her friends confronted one of them. It is spooky cause they lived in village at 1970s and and the village ghost stories with Pir baba and witchcraft were really happening. I'm already excited for this film, glad to see the producers investing in stories of India.

To me, this movie seems like a brilliant metaphor for depression. Makes me wonder if depression was what was referred to as a ‘pisasch’ in our culture…the fact that it isolates you and eats you alive are all signs of depression

That’s a good observation. I mean, what if every folk lore or demon story was just a sick person. You know, what if Bloody Mary was just a psycho lady who killed people. But, I believe every story has a deeper meaning. Movies are supposed to scare us by showing us what it looks like but it is actually a metaphor for something that actually lives inside you.

Love the concept of pisachi. It's what use to refer to the influence of Addiction, depression, uncontrollable feelings of rage. This is exactly what it's like. Really look forward to the movie because it emphasizes the horror it takes to live with it and the bravery it takes to fight it. Most importantly no therapist or exorcist can help. Its your fight and you need to win or die trying.

*Pishachas (Sanskrit: पिशाच, Piśāca)* are flesh-eating *(Nephesh: "Soul:" "People", "Person", "Being" or "Creature" and/or "the life with in them")* demons in *Dharmic religions,* appearing in *Buddhist* and *Hindu* mythologies. *A pishacha* is a malevolent being that has often been referred to as the very manifestation of evil. *The Mahabharata* states that the original *pischaca* was the *creation of Brahma.* The epic offers various interpretations of the being, including its residence in *the court of Kubera* or *Brahma* and worshipping the deities of its residence, and its worship of *Shiva* and *Parvati.* *The Pichachas* are described as having fought on the side of *Ghatotkacha* against Karna. But they are also said to have served *the Kauravas,* acting as the horses of the *chariot of Alambusha.* Other legends describe them as the sons of either *Krodha (figuratively "Anger")* or as *Dakṣa’s daughter Pischcha.* They have been described as having *bulging veins* and *protruding red eyes.* They are believed to have their own languages, known as *Paiśāci.* According to one legend, they are sons of Kashyapa and Krodhavasa, one of the daughters of Prajapati Daksha. *The Nilamata Purana* of the *7th century says the valley of Kashmir was inhabited by two tribes: *the Nagas* and *the Pisachas.* *Pischchas* like darkness and traditionally are depicted as haunting cremation grounds along with other monsters like *bhutas* and *vetālas.* *Pischchas* are supposed to possess the ability to shapeshift and assume any form at will, and may also become invisible. They also feed on human energy. Sometimes, they possess human beings and alter their thoughts, and the victims are afflicted with a variety of maladies and abnormalities like insanity. Certain mantras are supposed to cure such afflicted persons and drive away the pischcha possessing that particular human being. In order to keep the pischcha away, they are given their share of offerings during certain religious functions and festivals. *Pāṇini,* in his *Aṣṭādhyāyi,* described the pischcha as a *"warrior clan."* In the ancient literature, *the Dardic people* in the north of *Kashmir* were referred to as *Pischcha* and *Dardic* languages were called *Paiśāci.* They are said to have been descendants of *Prajāpati Kaśyapa. (Wikipedia)* They seem to me to be *DEMONS,* former *Angels* who rebelled against God and have been thrown to the vicinity of the Earth until the day of judgement and execution. However, you have to give them an opening for them to harass you, like seeing this movie. Have fun lol!

Concept of hell and heaven doesn't exist in Hindu thought. Pishachas are bhutas that couldn't cross between the realm of dead and living. They don't get reborn and that becomes the hell for them being stuck in limbo and hence they are eternally hungry and angry. They need peace... hence their counter rituals are called as Shanti vidya.

What do you mean opening up, you do realize different nations have horror movies centered around they’re own cultures, I really don’t see why when companies in white countries focus on traditional European stories it’s viewed as culturally bland. Maybe you should “open up” and start watching horror movies that are produced by countries like Korea, Japan, India etc… instead of relying on white nations to produce “cultural” content.

its about time there's a horror movie with a middle eastern/indian family and protagonist. Im not even indian, im black, but to see this is refreshing. No hate to white people or anything, im just sick of seeing the same caricature of characters in these horror movies. Also, the concept of this movie reminds me of "it follows". Anyone seen that one?

When we were kids even my mom used to tell me a story, not of demons but of Lord Hanuman, Krishna, Shiva, Bhagath sing, etc... Appreciate the effort they put in because it's not easy to make a movie about Indian culture and systems without proper understanding. Be it Bhoot, Preta, Pishaci, Rakshasa Or Asura Hanuman got us covered. If anyone is in any kind of problem just ask him with true devotion he'll be there.

Next to A24, NEON is one of my favorite film distributors, they put out quality content consistently, if at the very least intriguing/interesting. Especially when it comes to thrillers/horror. Also the eyes in the closet genuinely creeped me out, reminds me of being a kid and thinking you see something in your closet or not, and subtle. Going to close my closet door now, thanks.

Interesting concept. I've listened to a lot of myths and cryptid stories from around the world and India has quite a few freaky folk tales and entities that could adapt for really frightening horror stories. We don't usually hear about horror movies with an Indian background so this has potential
