I asked my Dad to build a ramp for my Gram so that she could walk off the porch and talk a little walk. At the end of that ramp I put a Victorian style bench and planted her a butterfly garden. My brother took care of her for 13 years, then it was my turn for 8 years. We did this because she took care of us when we needed it most and we’re grateful. 🙏

I am often miffed by the underwhelming reaction of people whose garden has literally been rescued from disaster, yet they respond with so little enthusiasm that it leaves me wondering if the effort was worth it or perhaps all that kind energy could have gone to someone who would value it more and understand the magnitude of the work done. I would be over the moon, I have yet to see a person remotely grateful or happy someone did them such a HUGE favor that would cost them a lot of money or days of really hard work. I'm working the last three months on my garden which is in a STATE after it wasn't worked on for a decade (it was my grandmother's) and it's SO hard, if anyone was willing to give me a real hand I would work with them all day, order food and drinks and literally pester them with my gratitude.

I wish I'd had access to KZbin years ago when I was your age - I liked doing this sort of work but was often very frustrated that the people who needed the help most were the ones I couldn't help because they couldn't afford to pay me, it must be such a joy to be able to offer to help people without needing to charge by the hour. Since I retired I have helped a couple who are unable to keep their garden tidy who live near me. Being kind is so rewarding.

I wonder if they had to tear down an old fence in a hurry and make the yard dog proof. Looks like old fencing to me. Then when the parents came they have been really busy inside. Perhaps they don't have a vehicle to take items to the dump? If life is too busy and the garden already a mess and a place they overt their eyes from, perhaps it's just easier to dump the unwanted junk there and "deal with it later" which never comes? Kinda the same way we fill up spare rooms with items waiting to be taken to the charity shop, or the garage with projects for a rainy day? It's easy to judge, but if people aren't using the garden as a space to relax in, then I suppose it becomes a storage space?
