It annoys me that just because EA are the devils of the industry, incompetent studios escape all the criticism they should recieve. A lot is to blame on Management of BioWare. Its not all EA’s fault, EA may be one of the worst game companies of all time, but lets not give BioWare a pass because they made good games before. BioWare’s lead and management abused their staff.

Psycho Tech I agree to a certain extent but why have EA forced BioWare into making a live service in the first place? It’s all good and well to give BioWare help because it’s in EA’s interest to get the game finished, but EA have a track record of acquiring studios who are good at making, say, RPG’s, and then forcing them to make games like live services, that are not their forté. Add to that the fact that the old school management of BioWare have all left, probably because they can see the direction EA are pushing BioWare, and they’ve left because they don’t like that direction. These studios that EA acquire are set up to fail from the off. The track record of EA speaks for itself.

@Rohit Thaosen Well apparently they were expecting the game to review at around a 70% average on metacritic. There was also a belief that it could be fixed over time.I'm guessing they hoped the open and friendly dev streams plus free dlc would buy them enough goodwill to keep the game going. Thankfully people have seen through that and know not to trust BioWare going forward. With the dying player base the mtx store can't be earning much. Warframe has gotten to the top of the genre through hard work and dedication by the people working on it. They seem to actually love what they have created and have no problem interacting with their fan base to find ways to make it better. EA does not care what you or I think about Anthem. The only people they’ll listen to are the investors.

Programmer here One problem that I think Anthem suffers from is the short actual development time. When you rush programming you end up with a lot of wonkey code that can be hard to follow and its documentation usually really suffers. Since the whole project has now been handed over to another studio they're going to have a hard time trying to decipher the codebase when they need to make changes. That could be one of the problems that now contributes to the delay of their planned roadmap. Adding new environments would probably be one of the easier things to do since those tools already work and the implementation is not done programmers, but changing the mechanics and adding new features will require them to go through the "spaghetti code" they were handed from the other studio. This sort of situation is what often leads to fixing or changing one thing ends up breaking something else. I've been in this situation myself and it's a real nightmare.

I love the concept of these shared world shooters the problem is the execution either they are stripped down to a point it is barely an RPG (Destiny) or it is just whatever Anthem was. Bioware's apprehension with people not wanting to discuss level design reminds me of something that my painting teacher told my class during a critique: we cant discuss the concept and meaning of the painting if the painting doesnt "work"; if it is painted poorly or the forms are unclear / proportions are wildly off. It's the same thing with anthem: we cant discuss level design because the "bones" of the game (like you said) arent "working". There are certain fundamental things that have to be taken care of before an audience can get in to the deeper stuff, and it sounds like anthem is failing at the fundamentals.

Interesting review but I think anthem will be ok. I think it has a good foundation. Combat is good, flying great, abilities solid. Does it need major improvement yes, but so do games like destiny 2 and even division 2. I believe in the bioware team, I trust they will get things fixed. Side note this is my first bioware game.

If destiny didn't have VOG, there wouldn't be a destiny right now. Division had soooooo many glitches and balance issues that it was considered dead. Yet division 2 is here. The reality is as long as bioware keeps pushing forward they can resurrect anthem and it will all be just an after thought.
