The ironing board thing is common all around the state in fishing areas.. they are left there for the next fisherman to use. There has been one at Point Culver for a few years, every one who fishes uses it and leaves it for the next guy. Its been there around 3 years so far.

Perhaps I’m just in a sentimental mood but I loved this episode so much because of the love affair that was palpable between you and your wife. When we reflect on what is really important we realize that yes we enjoy adventure and the outdoors and how overlanding can take us there. But in the end what’s most compelling in life is love and family and the warmth that both of those things fills our hearts.

I have to say I usually enjoy your videos, however not this one. I was fortunate enough to visit Dirk Hartog island last year and found the barge experience not a problem. There is more than enough information online and when you call and ask them for information, they were happy to help. They limit the number of vehicles on the island at any one time, it makes for an incredible experience and something that if you’re that close, I wouldn’t be missing out on. The barge only operates a certain amount of trips per day and from what the operator said, quite seasonal during the summer months when it’s too hot. For yourself, an extremely seasoned traveller to not have done their homework and sit there and complain about it because you messed up is just throwing a tantrum. Dirk Hartog is special because they limit the numbers, because they keep it pristine and because not just anyone can go over there every day. There will also be many days a year when the barge is not operating and the amount they charge needs to be accounting for this. You are in a unique position to showcase these incredible locations to the world, so instead of having a go at the operators for “price gouging” be a little more prepared and understanding of these extremely remote locations.

The barge on the other hand I found to have readily available information and prices. When I saw the prices I decided not to go to Dirk Harthog - This was park of my homework before I got to Steep Point.

ASPW I feel you are being a bit harsh about the barge. When you go to book a campsite on the DHI page, it has the option to select and book the barge for travel to and from the island. It is plain as day and easy to see. The price seems steep (the $340 is one way, so in reality $680 return), but its the main source of income for the homestead and pays to upgrade facilities and tracks on the island. They also only allow a maximum of 20 cars at one time, therefor running costs and overheads are higher due to less customers.

barge price covers wages, fuel, insurance, maintenance and of course a percentage of profit...ive done shark bay/steep point area quite alot and have always known about the barge price. However in saying that i do understand how it can be frustrating finding out the price if you are unaware that there is a price from the start. also need to remember it takes that barge minimum 1.5hrs to get back to Denham which would chew up the fuel pretty quickly (not to mention the price of fuel in Denham is not cheap either) i think the price is fair when you consider the entire entity of it all and not just that it is a 10min trip to the island and 10min back.

Spot on mate, I think people underestimate the costs of running a business. After overheads they’re entitled to make a profit.
@michaelbrown5474
@michaelbrown5474 2 жыл бұрын
@@shanegolding436 without a doubt and not to mention he is the only person that owns a barge in Denham. Just his insurance alone would be quite expensive considering he has 2 employees on the boat as well as someones car and minimum another 2 random passengers....id say he would be on 20-40 mill public liability fir that so called "10 minute trip". Not vary fair from ASPW side to slander a guy that is offering a service to people that want to explore such a unique part of the shark bay, let alone the world.

Yep normal “old man yells at cloud” type stuff. I’ve looked into to going to hartog, it was pretty obvious you have to book the barge. Yes the system could be better but you could also be grateful someone provides the opportunity to get there. Running a commercial ferry operation in what is literally one of the most isolated parts of the world isn’t a trivial undertaking. The owner probably isn’t driving around up there in a $150k vehicle.

I agree, when I went there in April 2018, prior to going there I did the requisite research on the gov website and found out about the barge. Think about what the barge business has got to do: I think the guy lives in the nearest town which is Denham, and has to sail about 50km one way to the beach landing to pick people up and he might have one or two customers a day? I reckon he’s barely breaking even especially with the price of fuel atm, that’s why he’s got ads on his boat. $800 is fair considering that it wasn’t booked in advance/planned. Kind of put the skipper on the spot there. If you’re out there barge operator person, I hope you’re well and thank you for providing this service, we appreciate you.

Understanding everything cost a little more when your remote means occasionally you’ll feel ripped off. 680 dollars on the other hand for a very short journey is a joke. Since covid people think it’s ok to extort others. It makes travel with a young family very difficult. I’m glad you called them out on the price. I will add I checked the price on line and winter is far cheaper still pushing 400 return

Bit of advice on Hema Maps, pretty awful really, take a look at ExploreOz Traveller App and run it on an iPad mini, your phone, laptop . When Hema stops, ExploreOz just keeps going even to the point of tracks hardly discernible on the ground. I was found wanting in parts of remote Kimberley, Arnhemland, etc with Hema on a VMS and ExploreOz came thru 'every time' with the tracks. You can walk away from your car, pull out phone and instantly all the same seamless mapping to incredible detail is there for your walk. Buy the ExploreOz App and maps AND IOS and Android versions and its on any device.
