As a Union Electrician. Please please please please pleasee!!!!!! Make your outlets GFCI. No one in van life is doing so. And all deal with water damage that laters damage their electric. If moisture is always present please install gfci outlets with usb to charge your phone. Also I can’t stress this enough. The last tiny home I helped with I suggested to the Client for armored cable. In case water gets in, or rats/raccoons, etc they are unable to damage the wires. Romex and those cute 12v wires will get destroy over time if water is in the built. Corrosion and all, which causes voltage drop. When voltage is drop not alot of amps get to pur appliances. Causing us to use it more to try to make up for it, but it wont. It may cost alot now, but get BX Armor cable. Or just expect you always fixing your rig every couple years. Too many water issues in these built and I keep watching romex, 12v cable being used. And fyi 12v can come in a armor cable it needs to be order. I keep watching people spend $10,000 on electric in tiny homes and it will get destroy within 5years from water damage to be done again. But job security is why most wont suggest this. Happy Built!! 🙏🏾

Subbed to her as well. I’m wondering what’s up with these Bigfoot supposed “bulletproof fiberglass” campers that causes SO MUCH WATER DAMAGE??!! The previous owner of Alex’s had even punched a slew of holes in the floor, no doubt a stopgap measure to try and drain some of the water. What a nightmare these 2 are going through. They are both amazing, talented and up for the challenge!! We’re all so blessed to be able to watch them!

Jonathan, these fiberglass roofs use a completely different sealer than roofs of other materials. Its a fiber reinforced alkyd. You mask off and paint it on and it dries hard as a rock. One brand is Heng's. Mine shipped out of Portland.

This camper is quite the project, and I can feel your enthusiasm for bringing it back to life! In terms of treating mold, look up borax treatment for mold to get some ideas for mixtures to try. Borax is super cheap and effective, I had a leak in my Jeep and ended up with moldy carpets after a few rainy seasons in Portland. Treated my carpets with Borax and let them dry during the summer, mold hasn't come back and no mildew smell 🙌

Oh boy, this is so much worse than I thought you'd find. I feel so bad for you. However, fear naught, you'll make it right. You'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. I purchased a huge '98 Lance with a dry bath about four years ago. Fortunately for me, the man I purchased it from did major reconstruction on it. The only part left with issues was the window over the bed that faces over the hood of my truck. Those always leak, and while I've repaired it, I plan on having it professionally removed completely next year. Glad to see your camper does not have that window. I'm a 73-years-old female and was able to completely reseal and repaint the outside of my camper. It wasn't leaking, but they need to be resealed periodically. It's just part of normal maintenance. I've also made several modifications to the interior. For example, I removed all the cloth covered surrounds from the windows and made blackout curtains that go from the ceiling down to the bottom and the sides, not just over the window frames. Just those little changes make it look and feel so much more roomy inside. I also sacrificed a clothes closet to have a custom-built woodstove installed. Best improvement ever as propane heat makes too much condensation. Looking forward to following your progress. You've seen the worst of it, and you'll make it sound again and probably better than new.

You should get ahold of an ozone machine. Detail shops and body shops have them. You can put it inside an area and it will kill the bacteria and mold. Stops it in its tracks. It gets rid of bad mildew smell too. It leaves a little chlorine smell for a few days but airs out. Not sure if ozone machine is the correct title. Thats just what we call them at my shop. Keep up the good work. 👍

Having dealt with mold and relatives owning businesses in construction and inspections, they told me that it’s actually a myth that bleach kills mold. It doesn’t kill the roots. The mold experts agree. Vinegar kills mold better than bleach, even strong vinegar (30% at hardware stores) is far superior. Just figured I’d share in case anyone might find it helpful.

Wow I can’t believe how much damage and water is in that camper! I wish more people would realize the how harmful and easy water can get in and ruin things. The 1988 camper I live in, 3 of the 4 corners had to be replaced because of rot, and there were probably 3 other spots that it leaked previously but weren’t damaged enough/worth it to tear apart. This is a good reminder that even fiberglass campers aren’t immune to water damage. You could use a product like Moldex spray to take care of the mold. Don’t use bleach. You might want to use an ozone machine as well in there to kill any remaining spores. I bought one years ago off of Amazon and couldn’t imagine life without one after using it on many projects. My friends who had mold in their house used it and loved it so much they bought their own unit!

I bought and converted a school bus in Washington state. The subfloor was plywood. It was absolutely soaked with water. The bus had no leaks. I think it was just 20 years of the pnw moisture with nothing to mitigate it. After converting it and getting rid of all the wet wood, I got a dehumidifier and I run it 24/7 in it. I have zero mold or moisture issues. Plus I have a wood stove and diesel heater so that helps keep it dry inside too. I live in it full time. I’d advise doing exactly what you’re doing and then use a dehumidifier when not in use and a dry source of heat when you’re in it. Ventilate whenever you’re boiling water or cooking, mitigate moisture as much as you can.

As many have commented, I really feel for you having all this water damage hidden just beneath where it could be seen. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. At the same time, I also, would be excited for the opportunity of making a completely custom and unique layout that can be perfect for you. Hell, it needs to be re-done anyways, and I suspect, with your investment now being far greater than originally planned, there's few reasons not to pull out all the stops and really go big! If it's any consolation, it makes for truly great content -- very valuable and eye-opening for those of us looking to buy a used RV, such as myself. I, personally, won't ever unsee or forget your experience and bless you for documenting it all. It's a lesson I really can't put a price on. 3M makes a rubber "eraser" kind of like a grinding wheel that attaches to a drill, which is usually made for removing decals and stripes from paint - might work on the residue you're dealing with (just keep wearing the respirator in that case). You might also try acetone with a paint brush on it and then Red Seal for moisture sealing after. Oh and any video between 20 - 30 minutes is ideal, longer can be fine if there's enough going on to justify it without too much repetition. I'm loving your current way of doing it -- good detail and not overly repetetive. Cheers!....from North Vancouver

I cringe everytime I hear someone say "silicone" when weather proofing an RV. Silicone itself will fail. Notice how that yellow silicone pulled away from the frame in you video. That is what it will do. You are in a great place to get information from the marine world. I suggest going to a boat build or repair facility and talk to the experts about marine caulking and adhesives. Expensive but "buy once, cry once". We're really enjoying your build. Brings us back to our van build. A suggestion: Run all your wires and plumbing so you can access all the wires without removing walls. That way, if something happens, or if you want to add something, you have easy access to the main wire runs. Loving that you are tearing down to the fiberglass. You've created a complete blank canvas. The possibilities are endless. My only regret is that I am not there helping!

Killz is the best thing for mold. You will definitely need your Air mask because it smells absolutely horrible. You'll need to paint it on the bad areas and then leave for a day or two, to let the fumes evaporate. For drying your floor out, your best bet is a regular box fan. Heaters help but nothing will dry out wet areas like a floor fan. When you see an area is good and dry then just turn the fan to the next area. Best of luck Jonathan, I really enjoy your videos.

Good progress. Ideas: Use scotchbrite pads on a drill driver or small grinder to prep the fibreglass. Don’t breathe the dust. While the old damage is from leaks you will also want to stop using an unvented catalytic heater inside. Everywhere the water vapour touches the cold spots of the shell and windows will condense and saturate any material that will absorb it.

Some years ago, before everyone was on You Tube, I read a post about a guy with a Class C who had a relatively minor traffic accident. Whatever was holding the house part onto the chassis failed, the box shifted and twisted and it was never the same again no matter what he did to realign it. Consider getting an ozone machine from someone, home renovators, used car dealers and detailers use them. It kills mold and mildew, be careful though and use it safely, follow the directions..

You're a braver man than I, Gunga Din. That dog barking would drive me bonkers. There's a dog up the street from me who barks all the time when outside. And it's outside a lot. In every season. I can hear it from my room, with all windows and doors shut. 🤪I had a bit of a perspective change when I happened to meet the dog when on a walk. Her owner noted that she was a rescue, has been like that since they got her, and they have no information on what her life was like before they adopted her. So she still makes me a little nuts (Google "misophonia"), but I have more compassion for her knowing she can't tell us what her life used to be like. And she IS pretty cute.... 😊

I am super surprised the camper was this bad for having the fiberglass shell design. So thankful my 70s caveman I am fixing isn't this bad. You got this for sure! Just remember now you can design the layout however you please. Also I would for sure think about painting the subfloor with a Kilz product possibly.

The floor is so wet because it is basically a bathtub. All the water ran to the lowest point and it has been trapped there under that linoleum for 25 years. Just rip it out because it will never fully dry out. When you rework the tie downs Don't forget you need backing plates at least the same square dimensions as those provided. You may want to look at using Coosa board in the floor and starboard for any of the other features that might get wet.

My heart goes out to you Jonathan about the dog barking. I once lived in an apartment with a non-stop barking dog next door. I timed it and the longest it stopped was for about 15 seconds. This was only for about 10 hours a day as the owner was either at work or out. So thankfully it stopped when she got home. I love animals, especially dogs, yet, I wanted to kill the dang thing after a number of months of this. I honestly think the son of sam killer was driven to insanity by the non-stop barking of the dog he said made him do it. My personal nightmare lasted a bit over 6 months. All of the neighbors were delighted when the owner moved, yet we all felt sorry for whoever she moved near to as long as that dog lived. And yes, she, the landlord and animal control were made aware of the situation. It was a little yippy dog that had also bitten a couple of people. The barking wasn't reactive to noise outside, it was just mad as heck and wasn't going to stop barking until she got home. BTW, there was a doggy door, but it never used it when she wasn't home. It could have, it just wanted to raise holy heck and it did.

@@heavencantwait1218 Yeah, it started after she got a job and then promptly divorced her husband. The dog wasn't used to being home alone and wasn't having it. We all hoped it would get used to it and accept it. That didn't happen and it never let up in the slightest.

You really tore the camper down to the bones 🦴 on this one! It’s hard work, and yes, while it is both surprising and disappointing to find the water damage and other issues, it is also a relief to know you’ve torn it out, are cleaning it up and making it better for you in the future! Plus with it stripped down like that, you basically have a “blank canvas” to start rebuilding it, the way you want it! Make sure the replacement mounts/bracing/brackets and all the installations you do, are rated for the maximum weight and the structural integrity etc., of the camper when replacing them, while keeping the entire project within the max weight, etc.. it will be interesting to see if or how you cut the walls out to deal with the leaks. You might have to do some fiberglass patching/repair work inside and outside to make the shell more waterproof. You can do it! Breaking up the videos into smaller segments is a good thing, in my opinion. It shows stages of demo/tear down, then the next steps in stages. You’ll be back out there doing what you love to do and you’ll have more confidence in your skills after this project. Enjoy, be safe and keep going!!

Imagine that, many companies built rolling boxes made out of wood ,caulking and paper thin insulation or not any at all and there’s water damage.I can see remodeling a scamp because it’s a one or two piece fiberglass, but these truck campers or rv’s are a losing battle unless you take all wood out put back a non molding material inside and leak proof it.The common theme is all truck campers and rv’s made out of wood get water damage.Even the floor needs ripped out and a thick fiberglass floor put back in,then use basement sealer on all of the fiberglass and foam mold proof insulation, don’t use one ounce of wood when putting it back together, and some r12 foam non molding insulation ,That’s my best advice . You will keep running into the same problem over and over unless you do this.Tear it down to the aluminum shell and build it back up with only fiberglass and mold resistant insulation.Don’t clean anything, it has black mold, tear it completely out and replace.

well by tearing out the upper portion, you can make sure that there are no water leaks from the top down. Water is so tricky. Sometimes it is hard to find the origination of the leak. Perhaps by tearing it all out, you can know for sure where any water damage exists. 🙌👏

You may be able to find an RV junkyard/2nd hand materials. Like maybe double-pane windows, a diesel heater,, other things. However, since the unit is smaller than normal doing everything with newer materials would be better. Best of luck. With the mold there are products, some expensive others are DIY which work like Vinegar and Water. Your choice. Check others who did off-grid repairs with mold, rebuilt campers on KZbin U.

Yes! Exactly. Vinegar is far superior for mold (30% vinegar at hardware stores also.) Bleach does not kill mold like many think. Most mold experts agree. It’s become a myth at this point. It doesn’t kill the mold roots. Second hand materials sounds like a potential avenue as you’ve stated as well!
