I do use various pads to tune the sound of the phones as well as tuning comfort. I am not a big believer of headphone ‘soundstage’. I know some gush over headphone soundstage but I never hear it, they’re just too close to the ears unless the soundstage is recorded into the music, like jazz, classical etc. Otherwise it just gets blasted directly into your ear holes which negates any notion of soundstage. Even the AKG K1000 struggles hard with it.

Would you mind talking about some of the challenges of tuning a closed back planar headphone, and some of how you can manage the lower frequencies?

IMHO, only buy aftermarket ear pads if the original is no longer available. Ear pads will change the sound profile both good or bad.

Is it possible to say how, in what direction different earpad materials, shapes, perforations or no perforations all affect the sound?

Every headphone is different and will respond differently. A perforated earpad might work really well with one, but totally kill off the bass response on another, for example. Your ear and head are also unique, and if you are treble sensitive, your pad preferences may vary from someone who isn't. This is part of the fun in pad rolling when you get new cans.

@@johngalt9989 Perforations will probably always absorb bass whatever headphones they are put on. The fact that reducing bass output is good for some 'phones but not for others is fairly obvious. What I'm looking for is a general guide to what effects the different pad specs have. I have my ideas but confirmation or correction of these would be welcome.
