Its a Wonderful Life in my mind is kinda like the complete opposite side of A Christmas Carol. A Christmas Carol spends most of its time establishing its main guy as mean and bad and shows him the error of his ways while Its a Wonderful Life shows a great man that is unable to see that his actions have impact. Scrooge is shown his negative impact by the spirts while George is shown that he can touch peoples lives in positive ways he did not know

I think this line from Princess and the Frog sums up George's life pretty well: Tiana: My daddy never did get what he wanted. But he had what he needed. He had love! He never lost sight of what was really important. And neither will I! George never got to travel and fulfill his dreams, but he had everything he needed in his hometown. That makes him a richer man than Potter, because he understood the value of helping others and enriching other people's lives with love.

I love It’s A Wonderful Life, and I have read the short story that inspired it too (which was originally sent in Phillip Van Doren Stern’s Christmas Cards to his friends before it was ever published for the public). The movie, even as a kid, I saw as a riff on A Christmas Carol, only with Bob Cratchitt (George Bailey) receiving the divine intervention not Scrooge (Mr. Potter). George doesn’t go to prison because they have more than $8,000 on the table (let alone the money wired by Sam Wainwright on top of that) , he is richer than Potter ever will be because he has the friendship of the entire town and Potter has no friends ( the only people with him in the bank are his employees so they have to be there).

Really the point was to show George that she really didn't want Sam, even if there was no George. So, even if George hadn't existed, she wouldn't have married into soybean plastics and lived a wealthy life... And I always figured the glasses were just reading glasses that she'd obviously need to wear constantly working in a library... I confess this is the one part of the film that didn't age well. It's the antiquated idea that women's lives revolve around men. Having a secure job one enjoys and living alone was seen as tragic in 1945... for women.

Perhaps the only thing I like more about the book is that George’s depression and suicidal tendencies stems from working a dead-end job in a dead-end town rather than ‘evil Mr. Potter is going to send me to jail.’ The book is more true to what actual suicidal people go through and reminds them that they have a wonderful life no matter how mundane it seems. Though at the same time, Mr. Potter is a fantastic foil for George in ultimately showing that George is a richer man than Mr. Potter could ever hope to be because he has love and friendship. I guess what I’m saying is I can appreciate both the novella and the movie.

@danielfronc43045 жыл бұрын
Even more of a "Fun Fact", Reality! : Republic Pictures, who shot the film and produced it, copyrighted the movie in 1946 when they shot it. Back then a film could be copyrighted for a second 28 year time period after the first 28 year copyright time period ran out merely by filing some paperwork and paying a nominal fee. However, in 1974, whoever then owned Republic overlooked that (it wasn't a matter of their not caring about it, as any programmable movie, especially one with such a distinguished cast is certainly worth exponentially more than a nominal fee) and it entered the public domain and everyone just started showing it. Just like The Wizard of Oz, what was a bomb as a theatrical release became a classic but via TV's yearly saturation showing of it. However, Republic (or it's then owner) used a 1993 Supreme Court ruling that said that whoever held the copyright to the source material of a movie had the copyright to the movie, if they wanted it. Well guess who held the copyright to the source book The Greatest Gift? That's right, Republic! Republic filed the paperwork etc. regaining it's exclusive rights to It's a Wonderful Life and in 1994 it entered into a then exclusive agreement with NBC to it's showings. That's why it then was no longer showing on so many stations or so often. Now if someone substantially alters the original film (eg. by removing/changing it's background music, or by deleting certain scenes) they then could show it without the copyright holders permission or having to pay them royalties but no-one's attempted that. Since the last copyright date was 1993, 28 years (assuming that that's still the copyright protection term) of it will run out approximately in 2021. I don't know if a third copyright time period is allowed. Stay tuned...

That being said, Harry should have been alive in the alternate universe.

"The Greatest Gift" has a major detail--the thing that truly separates the movie and the short story--that you completely overlooked. In it, the lives of the entire town are better because George did his job honestly. In the alternate reality, the man who would have had his job embellished from the company and put the entire town out of work. Literary George learns the lesson that just by doing the right thing, a man could positively affect the lives of others in unimaginable ways.

George and Mary's son, Petey, must have been named after George's dead father. I wonder where they got Tommy, Janie and Zuzu (I'm assuming Zuzu is really Susan in the same way that Beaver Cleaver is really Theodore but his older brother couldn't pronounce it or how many people I've met have younger siblings with nicknames that sound like how a small child would say their name) Susan's Greetings!

Maybe they just liked the names, or maybe Mary's father was named Thomas and either Mrs. Bailey or Mrs. Hatch was named Jane.

Is that how they got Beaver?

Frank Capra named the youngest daughter Zuzu after the Nabisco Zuzu Ginger Snaps (cookies) popular in the 30s & 40s. George even refers to Zuzu as "my ginger snap" in a scene toward the end of the movie.

B Steven I'd think it's more likely that he'd say my little ginger snap because it worked with the nickname shed gotten than that her parents had actually named her Zuzu

After seeing the comparisons between the short story and the movie overall I like the movie the best. The movie gets into more detail on what brought George to that point. It also gets you more acquainted with his friends and family. The only detail in the short story that made more sense to me was the fact that Mary was married to a man who is a drunken lout. In the movie she was a spinster librarian. To me being unhappily married is far worse than being an old maid. Also the part where George was simply depressed because he is stuck at a dead-end job is pretty relatable too. But it wouldn't have been as interesting as him having to battle Mr. Potter all the time.
