One tip that you can do - but not so easy to explain. Put a roller guide on an arm. It will hook over the top of the roller, then down to the sewing arm then a thumb screw holds it in place. It is set in a slot so that it can be moved in and out. Gives a side guide to keep stitches straight.

When testing it remove the bobin and shuttle - Check. Remove the thread - Check. Both of those to stop a tangly mess - Check. REMOVE the needle to stop a bloody mess - OOPS. Also - that hand crank going roundy-round will eventually tangle you up in the flywheel - OOPS. Other than that --- great work and planning there. - Joe -

Think I'm going to do the same thing except I'm going to use a toothed belt and mill teeth into that wheel instead. I have a Sailrite Worker B package I upgraded to so I have the old AC motor and pedal I took off of it. Should be fairly easy with my small mill and indexing head. Worst case scenario is that I'd have to turn down the OD of the wheel a little to make sure the tooth spacing is even.

Mainely Acres Yea I was thinking the same. How much would you charge to build one for someone ?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 6 жыл бұрын
If I had my own machine shop I would charge about 50-60 $ to machine the flywheel, but I am not really set up to do these. It took my Dad and me about a week to complete the machining required to get the flywheel balanced and to cut the groove out. If you can find a local machine shop in your area, that would be your best bet. I wouldn't imagine that it would cost more than 80 dollars to machine your flywheel. Then the only cost left is the motor, everything else you could make yourself. I think it would be cool to design a motor mount that would be able to attach to the tripod, but that would require welding and some mounting trickery. LOL If you decide to do that let me know and I will look up some affordable motor options for you and I can even send you a belt to run the whole set up.

You can get better peddle control and comfort if you mount the peddle to use knee pressure also the belt tension should have an eighth inch of travel.that allows for torque flex at start up.

It must be nice to know everything about everything, but since I don't, I really appreciate all the detailed information I can get on this subject. I'm learning step by step from wonderful people who are willing to share their knowledge for free. Learning how to grease the machine and what to use to do it, as well as putting the flywheel on correctly was valuable information to me, as well as every other little detail that I'm sure you felt was useless information. And, for your information, just because I don't know something now, doesn't mean I'm going to quit. I've learned an amazing number of things from generous KZbinr's who have shared their skills and knowledge with people they will never know. And, for you chaosmagusgod, you DO sound like an ass!

I was just looking and a clutch type sewing motor is $100.00 and up. That would be a much better motor than the little house wife machine motor. I have a Sailrite machine with the little motor that gets so hot that it locks up. I plan to get a clutch motor for it soon. Or after watching the videos on this little machine I might retire the Sailrite and get and put a clutch motor on of these slave labor made machines.

I have not had any issues with the small motor I am using freezing up, but your right a clutch motor would be ideal. I have a large clutch motor that a buddy of mine sent me, but it's for my Juki bar tack sewing machine that I need to get up and running.

The maximum speed seems a bit high and it seems to have a bit of difficulty overcoming the resistance of the leather when first starting off at a slow speed. You might want to consider adding a larger pulley to the flywheel (double the diameter of the pulley and you'll half the speed and double the torque). That might require a bit of a redesign of your table mounting for the sewing machine though since the pulley would have to go through your desktop, or mount it closer to the edge so that the pulley cleared the desktop, or go with another set of pulleys in combination with your existing one. The latter solution would allow you to get quite a bit more reduction in speed / increase in torque. It depends upon what you are comfortable with though. Personally, I like a sewing machine to go pretty slow when I'm sewing very thick materials since I'm less likely to break needles that way.

I'm thinking I might be able to buy this machine (my only chance to ever have a machine that sews leather) and adapt it to my old Singer treadle machine cabinet. When Singer made these machines the pulleys were on the end, rather than the flywheel on the front and it appears that if that were still the case it would be fairly straight forward to simply lengthen the belt to make the machine run. Speed and control would be manual thru the foot pedal. Awesome! I'm not familiar with the mechanics of pulleys so maybe you can offer some suggestions as to how to set up a pulley configuration that can use the existing pulley location on the front and drive the machine by the manual foot pedal plate. Are there pulley set-ups that make a 90 degree angle? Or, with the very slow speed of the manual pedal sewing, is there any option of a creative belt configuration? Thank you for any suggestions you may be able to share. I have loved this series of videos, and they have given me hope that one of these days I might actually be able to sew leather on a machine! :o)

Couple questions. You gave specs on the motor but going back I cant find the spot. Is it 100 watt or 150 watt? If no watts listed how about amps? And do you feel it works fine on very thick leather as in does it have enough power? Are you still using the set up with the motor? Thanks...
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, the motor is 115 Volts, ACDC, 105 watts and the model number is 174667 E-RP.) What leather weight/thickness do you consider very thick? I have used my set up to sew two layers of medium weight (5-6 ounces) leather. I think the motor is sturdy enough to handle thicker leather, but you would want to get your hands on a good v belt. I use old belts from printers and they don't last too long. Yes, I still us the same set up. I am going to be hemming some rain suit bottoms tonight.

@@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks thanks for the information. I've not seen any stitcher videos using the motor after you produced one where you finished adding the motor. I did decorative leather work as a teenager. I am now retired and going to dive back in. I also sew so I feel the sticher you are demonstrating will be perfect for me. Keep up the good work. Love the videos.

think your going to have to upgrade your motor if you want more control.. problem is that it don't have enough power at low speed operation so it forces you to get heavy on the foot peddle, by the time it has enough power to punch through it is going to fly through it!! in large you have the wrong motor here these older motors did not have a lot of torque at low speed operations

pedal not can adjust good speed, you bush pedal motor run too fast alltime, need better speed controller, maybe DC motor and PWM controller, or adjust flyfeel ig to bigger or motor shaft to smallen wheel.or better if have gear, one or 2 wheel more can change speed lot down, motor can run fast but flywheel run slowen lot. AC or DC motor have problem run good slow speed. gear have best think make drop speed little more. variator ,same than automatic scooter gear have best,

Just use the motor out of the wifes dryer. Then give her a clothes line to hang the clothes on to dry. Tell her someone broke into the house and the only thing they stole, was the dryers motor. Then sew a cover for the motor so she can't see it, just larger so it has room for get cool air. It get it, but DC requires a battery as the amperage required is to large for an A/C transformer with a rectifier, smoothing caps, while the PWM board can be purchased line, a dumpster dive will get you and old sewing machine motor for free.
