CLIP DESCRIPTION:
As the Monster (Boris Karloff) is struck by lightning, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) exclaims his achievement and his God-like feeling of creation.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Still regarded as the definitive film version of Mary Shelley's classic tale of tragedy and horror, Frankenstein made unknown character actor Boris Karloff a star and created a new icon of terror. Along with the highly successful Dracula, released earlier the same year, it launched Universal Studio's golden age of 1930s horror movies. The film's greatness stems less from its script than from the stark but moody atmosphere created by director James Whale; Herman Rosse's memorable set designs, particularly the fantastic watchtower laboratory, featuring electrical equipment designed by Kenneth Strickfaden; the creature's trademark look from makeup artist Jack Pierce, who required Karloff to don pounds of makeup and heavy asphalt shoes to create the monster's unique lurching gait; and Karloff's nuanced performance as the tormented and bewildered creature. Frankenstein was greeted with screams, moans, and fainting spells upon its initial release, obliging Universal to add a disclaimer in which Edward Van Sloan advises the faint of heart to leave the theater immediately. If they don't: "Well...we've warned you." Director James Whale was memorably embodied by Ian McKellen in the Oscar-winning 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters.

Incredible scene. Instilled into pop culture for eternity. The famous "It's Alive!" line has been echoing in multiple pop culture films and shows for decades. A legacy that will never be forgotten. Frankenstein!

I find it fascinating how popular culture portrays this moment as pure insanity on the doctor's part. The original scene is much more relatable than I expected. It begins so humble and quiet, like he's too nervous to let himself declare it a success too soon, and the excitement gradually gets to him.
@kimhae-jung4966
@kimhae-jung4966 5 жыл бұрын
Well, its meaning in popular culture isn't a pure reflection of the film. It's tied up in the whole concept of the mad scientist. Plus, in the original novel, he actually is more insane than he seems here. He never says "it's alive," but he's a complete nervous wreck, working day and night for two years, and so exhausted that he doesn't even notice how horrifying the creature looks (more horrifying than in these old movies) until it actually starts to move, at which point he screams in horror and runs away and is basically insane for six months.

When this movie first played on TV, at the end of this scene the TV censors cut out the mention of "god." This movie seriously creeped me out when I was a kid. The black and white, the early film technology and early acting styles, all made it seem the more real. Today's movies with all their CGI aren't as creepy as this movie seemed years ago. And Karloff made the very best Frankenstein Monster ever!

Colin Clive is incredible in both this and the sequel. This version of Victor Frankenstein is energized, full of confidence and slightly mad. In Bride of Frankenstein he is weakened both mentally and physically, and much more subdued, like his mental spark is starting to burn out from the tremendous strain the whole ordeal has put him through.

Frankenstein was actually pretty lucky his family and friends came to see the creation. In the book he did it alone, so when it started to cause trouble, he tried to handle it by himself (with disastrous results). But only because everybody found out about the monster and creation did he survive.

@dnuke Well, if one is including the rest of the novel, Frankenstein did try to “handle” it himself, once the creature ended up killing his wife as revenge for him destroying the half-finished bride. The final act of the story revolves around him relentlessly hunting down the creature, even to the point of eventually dying from the cold and exhaustion.

JCX Productions bullshit, by that logic, the 30s were extremely PC since that was a time where even showing a couple in the same bed together was seen as outrageous. Also by that logic, movies today are “PC” because they’ve accepted values that many people care deeply about. Like during the time this film was made, if you showed an interracial couple in film or even reality, there’s a possibility you could be publicly murdered and you dare to compare that to now.

In the original book written by Mary Shelley, early 1800's . there are two things that standout: sympathy for the wretched monster yet no criticism of Dr. Frankenstein. even when he's a coward in a court case that hangs an innocent friend for strangulation of a child when he new it was his monster. that did it also there is a confusion of physical beauty with goodness. i recommend the book highly. she wrote her first version at 18 yrs of age ! and it was great. I never read her second version written some decades later. either way its called "Frankenstein, or the New Prometheus. that is the full title. its easy to figure out why the Prometheus comparison to Dr. Frankenstein's feeling like god.

Um, Sorry to disagree but IMHO there's quite a bit of criticism of Dr Frankenstein in Mary Shelly's book, Frankenstein's creature is portrayed more far more sympathetically than he ever is, even though the story is told from the doctor's P.O.V. Frankenstein is portrayed as someone who is completely negligent of his creation and turns his back on it and takes little to no responsibility for what he's done whatsoever and he becomes as wretched and miserable as his creature as a result at the end of the story.

Actually, Frankenstein criticizes himself a lot in the book, including in the scene you mentioned.

“Now I know what it feels like to be God!” The reason why this quote still holds up is because of the way that the quote is said, and the fact that the quote reveals to the audience what the meaning behind the film is.

Great scene. I was lucky enough to see the film in a theater on Hollywood Blvd. Small screen doesn't do the movie justice. Imagine how frightening the cinematography and especially, Jack Pierce's makeup design for Karloff were to audiences of the early 1930s. They had never seen anything like it.

Over acting here kinda make sense that's why. Imagine creating life from electricity and dead body parts and it's the 1930s! Also many actors back then were stage actors, that's why overacting was more common and acceptable..

We've come so far with making great movies. New technology, new amazing special effects and fantastic actors. And yet, this remains one of the greatest cinematic scenes in Hollywood history, back in the beginning, the 1930s. And we've seen many monster and horror films throughout the decades, some of which are incredibly scary. But I can easily imagine that when Dr. Frankenstein screamed "IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!", there were theatres everywhere that had viewers screaming in pure terror of his insanity. The icing on the cake was his "Now I know how it feels to be God!" and that psychotic laugh that occurs just as the scene fades. We may forever debate "the greatest", but one thing's for sure, Frankenstein will forever be one of the greatest monster/horror movies ever created.

There was a great commercial in the sixties that parodied this scene. I think it was for Turtle Wax, and the Colin Clive imitator screams "It's alive! It's alive!" when he sees his car's finish after an application of the product. The actor was a dead ringer for Colin Clive, so much so that I wondered if it was Clive himself, just very well preserved in his sixties. (Boris Karloff, older than Clive, was still active at the time) I wasn't aware that Clive had died so young.

I love how Mary Shelly described when Victor brought his creature to life in the book… “It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.”

I think the most terrifying moment of the entire film is when Karloff makes his very first entry as the monster. Notice that when he comes through the door, he comes through it BACKWARD, then slowly turns around to reveal his true appearance. That scene was so terrifying, that a woman actually sued Universal for causing her "mental and emotional trauma," but it only brought more people into the theater. I only wonder if that move was Boris' choice, or the director's? In any case, that scene STILL scares the hell out of me.
