The Everly Bros. are one of the most important and influential acts in the rock era. Their greatest hits include: "Cathy's Clown", "Bird Dog", " All I Have To Do Is Dream" "Crying In The Rain", "Wake Up, Little Susie", "'Til I Kissed You", " Walk Right Back", and, "On The Wings Of A Nightingale".

Brian May QUEEN: "The music of the Everly's, which thrilled me to the core when I was a boy, will be in my head till I die. "I loved those guys and still do. From them I learned to play rhythm guitar and how two-part harmonies work." "How different emotions are evoked using different sequences of intervals, how to find the moments that chill your spine. I could probably write a book on the music of the fabulous Everly Brothers." "But you’ll find echoes of their influence in a lot of our old Queen songs and perhaps that is the best tribute. "I never met them. Wish I had. But they will always be my heroes."

The influence of the Everly Brothers can't be overstated. Their harmonies influenced almost all who came after: Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles and even Jay's fave The Bee Gees. The BG's would always say they took the Everly's 2-part harmony and would simply find/add the 3rd harmony part. They have lots of classics: Wake Up Little Suzie, All I Have To Is Dream, Love Hurts (original version), Problems, Bird Dog, Crying In The Rain, When Will I Be Loved, So Sad To Watch Good Love Go Bad... and many more. You've probably reacted to a couple of these songs already.

I think you're a bit young. When this happened, there was no such thing as "Folk Rock." Here in the mid-late 50s, it was just Rock & Roll, which was partly born of Country music, which Don & Phil had been singing together since age 9. The term & genre "Folk Rock" came to be in the mid-60s, with The Byrds, Dylan, erc.

The thing to pay close attention to when listening to the Everly Brothers is their incredibly tight harmony! It's sounds like they're singing the exact same notes but they are actually singing two different parts. But it's such a tight harmony structure that it's difficult (nearly impossible for most of us) to be able to distinguish one voice (or rather, one melodic line) from the other. It's a phenomenon known as "sibling harmony". Any two (or more) good harmony singers can produce great vocal harmonies if they really work at it. But there's a special "something" about sibling harmony that is hard to beat.

The Everlys sound in harmony like no other act. Phil and Dons voices when in that harmony sounds like one voice instead of two . Highly influential. They reunited after a 20 year hiatus in 1984 and their comeback album EB84 was a triumphant return. The lp was produced by Dave Edmunds and Paul McCartney wrote the albums first single for them with On The Wings Of A Nightingale. My favorite from the lp you should give a listen to at the end of the evening is a song called Asleep and it’s beautiful Phil and Don in that one voice harmony.

One of the reasons the 80s was such a great time in music was not only the great bands and music that was being made, but it was a time when many of the great artists of the 1950s and 1960s were touring again, sometimes in group tours or just by themselves. In that decade I saw so many who are now long gone, and among them The Everly Brothers on two occasions. They were as good live as on record, and sounded exactly the same. Simply magnificent.

These guys are simply one of the greatest singing duos of all time period. They influenced the harmonies of The Beatles and many other British Invasion groups. They had so many hits and great songs you'll want to check out. A very short list should include: "Bird Dog", "Crying in the Rain", "Cathy's Clown", "Ebony Eyes" (which will make you cry), "Love is Strange", "Gone, Gone, Gone", "Til I Kissed You", "Wake Up Little Suzie", "Walk Right Back", and "The Price of Love". Even though they were brothers they broke up in the 1970s. They reunited in the early 1980s and had a huge show in England to celebrate. After that, Paul McCartney wrote them a song called "On the Wings of a Nightingale" which you should also check out. I went to see them in their first show in their native KY after they reunited and they had a massive section roped off for family and friends. The show was such a hit they did another which I also attended the next year.

You've got to do 'Always Drive A Cadillac'. It's about high school lovers that are seniors and she wants to break up with him following graduation. She has big plans and he's not a part of said plans. It was all talked out and simple and she knew he would understand, a girl with dreams as big as hers, just had to make some plans. He is devastated of course, but shows "inner strength" and writes a poem in her senior year book, wishing her the best and hopes she 'Always drives a Cadillac', etc.. At the 10 year class reunion, she doesn't attend, but writes a note about how successful she has become and apparently treats people badly. With the note, is a life sized photo of her, in a full length sable coat. He attends the reunion, reads the note and a verse underneath the photo, only he would understand, it's an answer to his poem he had written in her year book. Her note is full of self absorption and he wonders why she had grown so cold. That was the last anyone hear from her, but years later he gets a card from her, saying she's coming home to stay. He wonders what life had done to her and why she thought of him, but if she stops by to say hello, he wonders what she will think when she sees....An old ragged high school year book, that falls open to just one page.....with a picture of a young girls face, full of beauty and dreams and rage. The words underneath the picture is a verse that's still so true, it's one he swore no one would read, unless he shows it to her. He had penned another poem to her, in HIS old year book, similar to the poem he wrote in her year book. I don't want to give it all away, but I know you like songs that tell a story and this one certainly does. This song reminded me so much of a high school relationship I had, with a girl just like the one in this song. She too had big dreams and was very materialistic and I wasn't part of her plans. After about 25 years and out of the blue one day, she contacted me again. She had gotten a divorce and her dreams all suddenly went up in smoke. She wanted someone with money who could buy her things, but be very careful what you wish for?? She said she was never happy and he started cheating on her, within a year of their marriage. She told me "I always loved you and was too stupid to realize it!" and she wanted us to get back together. I was (and still am) married, so it was a bit late, dontcha think!?! Though I often thought of her, what was up in her life and what might have been. We are now friends again, but every time I hear this song, my mind comes around to her. So PLLEEEEEASE do this song for me! Thank you!!

So glad you guys reacted to this. The Everly Brothers were my Papa's favorite group. He's gone now, but every time I hear an Everly Brother's track I always think of him. Seeing you guys enjoy it too made my day!

I Love this music..... The 50's had a resurgence in the 1970's Happy Days, American Graffitti, Laverne & Shirley and so on. Every time I hear this song, I think of the Tv program Happy Days, they played a lot of Everly music.

The Everly Brothers grew up playing singing on their parents radio show. A few old excerpts from this can be heard on their album "Roots" - which is totally brilliant and a must listen for you guys. They talk about "little Don and baby boy Phil" on the show. Everyone stands on the shoulders of those who came before, and the Everly Bros were likely influenced by the Louvin Brothers before them. In turn, the Everly Bros were big influences on the Beatles and many others who came after them. You really must listen to the Roots album.

I'm glad you mentioned the Louvin Brothers. Talk about tight harmonies. Charlie was a nicer human being than Ira. Ira, though much taller than Charlie could hot some very high registers, There have been a lot of Brother acts in C &W music :the Delmores, Stanleys etc.

There's a pair of twin brothers from the late '80s who performed under their last name, nelson. They were the sons of 50s and 60s musician and teen heartthrob Ricky nelson. They had a pretty enjoyable rock song called "Love and Affection". You guys definitely need to check that one out.

I absolutely adore this song. I got really into the Everly Brothers20 years ago when I was 12, and I would sing this song to my cat and dance with him in my room.

I saw the Everly Brothers perform about, oh, 20 years ago (how time flies!), when Simon and Garfunkel included them on their tour. Simon and Garfunkel began the show, followed by the Everly Brothers for a number of songs before Simon and Garfunkel joining them for a couple of songs, with Simon and Garfunkel then finishing up the night. Showcasing the Everly Brothers in this way was a thoughtful demonstration of the high regard Simon and Garfunkel held for them. By the way, Simon was in a bad mood during the first half of that show. Don't know what was going on with him, but after performing with the Everly Brothers, his mood completely shifted; he started to really enjoy himself, and interacted well with the crowd. It was a great night of music!

Great song...also a really good movie!! It's a dramedy about the struggles of parenting and moving on after a split/divorce. It's shown more from the man's perspective and has a great cast. It will make you laugh, cry and smile.

This song was heard regularly in the background on the hit ABC TV sitcom Happy Days in the 1970s. Don Everly was the father of Erin Everly, who in the 80s & 90s was Axl Rose’s girlfriend and wife (now ex-wife) and the inspiration for Guns ‘n Roses’ massive hit song “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

I had about ten cassette tapes in my teenage years. One was the Everly Bros, and I played it until it didn't work anymore. They were popular a couple decades before I was born, but I loved their music. They were tremendously influential. You don't necessarily hear their distinct sound in later bands, but their harmonies were appreciated by people across the spectrum and many later groups that utilized harmonies in their music readily cited the Everly Bros as big influences on their music.
