"Unchained Melody" was originally written in the 1950's about a guy in prison wondering if his girl would still be waiting for him when he go out. But, when the Righteous Bros. released it in 1965 it coincided with the big build up of U.S. troops in Vietnam. Then it became "THE SONG" of so many young couples who were separated by the war. In the 1980's it was used in the movie "Ghost" and took on a whole new life of its own!

This is what we call Blue Eyed Soul. This song is considered to be one of the most beautiful ballads ever composed. Many others have covered it but this is Bobby's signature song. It is said that both Bobby Hatfield & Bill Medley wanted to sing it & ended up flipping a coin to decide who would do the solo. This was done in front of a live audience, on national TV, & his parents were also there watching (talk about being nervous). But he absolutely killed it and back then there was no such thing as auto-tune or other computer aided technology to improve your vocals. Natural raw talent was the standard back then. Sadly these days, that is no longer the case. This song regained popularity when it was featured as the main love ballad for the movie "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, & Whoopi Goldberg. In fact, Whoopi won her very first Oscar award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance... My uncle used to call this song "a guaranteed panty dropper" - LOL! RIP Uncle Bernie...

The song comes from a 50’s movie “Unchained”.....it was about a guy in prison.....Bill Medley (The other “Brother”) produced this recording by Bobby Hatfield (it was not produced by Phil Spector who tried to take credit for it). Medley played piano on the recording and always said if he knew how big a hit it was going to be he would have hired a better piano player. Bobby’s performance was live on the Andy Williams Show, no auto tuning no sweetening. Bobby’s parents were sitting in the audience and he was really nervous....if you want to hear Bobby and Bill singing together listen to “ You’ve Lost That Lovin Feeling”:or “Soul and Inspiration”....They sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone”;together live on the Ed Sullivan Show which is available on KZbin and will blow you away!!!

Amber, you are so extremely dead on when you said the "simple times" dancing with the one you care about. We as a human beings have lost that ability to stop relax and savor the life we are given. I love your reviews because you bring such a fresh perspective of the songs that I (68) grew up on. Keep doing what you are doing and maybe the love of music can help put us back together. There are two artists in the band...who aren't literally "brothers": Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Both sing, but not in every song. The other singer has a deeper tone, but is equally excellent. It's Bobby Hatfield singing in this performance. This song is probably the most iconic 60's song that there is. It was an absolute monster hit, and has remained unusually popular ever since. As for the "tone" (both musical and emotional) of the 1960s, I experienced it first hand: I was born in 1956. The music of the 1950s and pre-Beatles 1960s definitely has a distinctive tone. 1964-1966 was a transitional period, partly continuing the earlier styles and tone, but partly influenced by the "British Invasion" (e.g, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc.) The psychedelic period began in 1967, but there were still hit songs that continued using earlier styles and/or tones. And there was also the Mowtown sound (e.g, The Supremes) that did its own thing (I'm a big fan.) Then in 1969, the first "heavy metal" music appeared (I'm a big fan of metal, too,) although it didn't achieve dominance until the late 1970s or early 1980s. The 80's were its heyday. The period from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s was one of the most innovative and creative in the history of music. Popular music re-invented itself roughly every decade. Living through it from childhood created the false impression that music just naturally evolves like that. But the truth is that that's not the case. Normally, it's relatively stagnant, for many decades. Because of that, I'm really amazed that people 40+ years younger than I nevertheless appreciate music from decades before they were born. My generation was not like that at all at that age: We almost universally were only interested in music we grew up with, or that was current at the time. The fact that young people no longer have that attitude is, in my opinion, at least partly due to the fact that music creativity at the highest level--the level where new major genres (as opposed to minor sub genres) is created every 5-10 years--is no longer happening at anywhere near that rate. That may not be the only reason, but I think it's a significant factor.
@that1mamalady3 жыл бұрын
For the most part, you are right. But a few of us, loved music from before I was born(1967). I happen to be from a very large family, I listened to everything. From the 20's on up until now. We camped all summer long & my father brought his hand crank victrola. So I grew up dancing to very old music.

Well, I'm a few years older, but you have saved me a heap of keyboarding. I have also noticed that watershed time of the late Fifties. Young people today are appreciative of music I liked so long ago. That is a fifty year gap. I can guarantee that nobody of my generation had even the remotest interest in music from the 1910s. I do recall hearing music from that time on the radio in the Fifties, but it was "Old People's Music" and impossibly ancient to me.
@Grumpy_Rabbit3 жыл бұрын
@@flamencoprof Yup. I experienced the same phenomenon: "Old people's music." I think that one moral of the story is that what music you like is determined by your socio-cultural milieu, and not by your biological age. Liking music from 50+ years wasn't part of the culture back then, but it is now. The quality of the music may also be a factor (we old folks would like to think so,) but that might not be the most important factor.

@shadowfaxcrx5141 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but they're wrong. The reason older music seems like it was overall higher quality is because no one plays the bad stuff from back then anymore. We hear the Temptations, not the Ballad of Liberty Valance, and we hear this instead of Snoopy vs. The Red Baron or The Jolly Green Giant. In 60 years no one will hear the junk from today either, but songs from groups like Pentatonix, Aguilera, Gaga, etc will survive and people then will be talking about how the 2020s were so much better than the 2080s.

@@shadowfaxcrx5141 There has been some scientific research done on the sound of music today and that in the past. The conclusion was current music does not have the richness of sound and richness of melody that music in past decades has had. They found more redundancy or repetition in melody and lyrics in current music. When I think of groups/bands with rich sounds I think of the Moody Blues, Chicago and the Electric Light Orchestra. They included either big band and/or orchestra instruments in instead of just electric guitars and drums.

I always loved The Righteous Brother’s song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” especially with it being sung in “Top Gun”. The song “Unchained Melody” was originally sang by Todd Duncan in a prison movie from 1955 called “Unchained” but the song didn’t become popular until the Righteous Brothers covered it in 1965. I always find it interesting how many popular songs are actually covers of other artists songs.I think the best covers are those that put their own spin on the song.

Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's song I Will Always Love You has made Parton tons more money than her original version from 1974. Parton used it as a farewell song based on the letter she wrote to Porter Wagoner when she decided to leave his show. Houston sang it for her movie The Bodyguard.

My mom loved this song and so do I. I wasn't born when it was released and my mom was a young teen when it was. When she was older and had me, she'd slow dance with me in her arms, and would do the same with my little brother. My step-dad would let me stand on his feet as we danced. Sometimes the four of us would dance together as they held us. I was very young, but I recall so many great memories due to music. As a teen, I listened to this and similar songs. I was made fun of by other kids, but didn't let it bother me because I knew I'd been given a chance to learn about real music. I was proud.
