Everly Brothers is ANOTHER HUGE RABBIT HOLE. They have a dozen or more big hits; songs that were remade for decades later by all kinds of different artists. Don Everly just passed away a few weeks ago joining his brother who died a few years ago. Perfect melody and harmony.

Listen to Everly Brothers' "Cathy's Clown" next because their harmonies weave back and forth with each other in an unusually beautiful way! I know you're really going to enjoy it. Try to find the live version (I know there is one) because, Amber, you need to see how adorable these guys were. I was in junior high, and they were a big deal, such fun for us to listen to back in the day! And thank you SO MUCH for including them! They deserve more attention because, as others have mentioned, they were the originals that so many later famous artists tried to copy.

I'm glad you're discovering the Everly Brothers - their influence on the music of the 60's and beyond into the present cannot be understated. Almost all important groups from the Beatles on have cited them as guides especially where harmonies are concerned. If you listen to a good sampling of their songs, you'll begin to hear them in the music of those who followed. Try LET IT BE ME from their reunion concert. Just beautiful -

@@ptournas Absolutely! The Beatles. The Kinks. The Zombies. The Beach Boys. Simon And Garfunkel. CSN. All of them said in interviews that The Everly Brothers were greatly influential in their development. In 2004 Simon and Garfunkel took them on tour with them. I think that pretty much says it all.

The Everly Brothers were one of my dad's favorite artists and I think of him every time I hear them. They had some very catchy hits like "Bye Bye Love" and "Wake Up Little Suzie," but if you want to hear the saddest song everrrr, check out "I'm Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail." Their voices are impeccable! And very much an influence on the Beatles and another harmonizing duo, Simon & Garfunkel.

Amber, you mentioned the reference to the exclamation of "gee whiz" -- that's how we talked back in the 50's. I was born in 1950 so I was just a little kid when all this music started out in the 50's. Like this song, it was 1958 (I think) so I was 8. So my first "loves" were Elvis, Ricky Nelson, the Everly Brothers, among others just like them. And I wasn't the only one! Almost all girls back then were "in love" with all of these beautiful artists, just like me! My parents didn't use profanity in front of me and my sisters, we didn't hear it in school, church nor on TV. It was forbidden to use profanity on TV shows and we only had 3 channels. So, of course, there was no profanity in the music that was on the radio or TV. I probably didn't hear an actual curse word until I was in high school and not very often. So, when we did hear a bad word, it was jarring and almost foreign. Consequently, when we heard music that used bad words or explicit language about sex, it was judged against all the music that we grew up on and it wasn't received well with lots of us "boomers." I'm not talking about all of us, of course, but a significant amount of us to be sure. It started with hard rock which pretty much got started in the late 60's and got bigger and bigger. Now, I like some rock, but if it is too raunchy, it's just not for me. It's the same with other genres, like hip hop and rap. If it gets too raunchy, i'm not a fan. Anyhow, enough of that . . . loved you listening to the Everly Brothers, I knew you'd love them, too! Now you need to listen to Ricky Nelson! You'll flip for him, he's so very cute! I used to watch him on his parents' TV show and dream of marrying him someday! I wasn't yet in my teens but he already was a teen! Just . . . oh, you'll just have to see him for yourself! Along with Hall & Oates, and Simon & Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers were the most successful duo in music history. They were indeed brothers (unlike the Doobie Brothers and Righteous Brothers, who were unrelated), Don (who we sadly lost just last month) and Phil (who passed in 2014). Their biggest hits included "Wake Up Little Susie", "Bye Bye Love", "Bird Dog", "Problems", "Cathy's Clown", and "(Till) I Kissed You". Guys, There’s a movie called American Graffiti which has one of the best 50’s and 60’s musical soundtracks ever. The film is brilliant and is a bit of a cult movie but the accompanying soundtrack is just fantastic. It’s well worth a watch if you ever get the chance.

Yup, The Everly Brothers had matching vocal tones that you normally only get with sibling groups. And, many of their hits were written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and were more intricate than you'd notice at first glance... the lines often rhymed in the middle as well as at the end. And, their vocal arranger wrote harmonies that used a lot of fifth intervals instead of just the usual thirds. That gave their singing a haunting quality that was copied by The Beatles and other British Invasion groups.

Yes, they did indeed influence many artists. The Beatles, for one, said that their harmonies were influenced by the Everlys. The Everlys also did the original versions of Nazareth's biggest song, "Love Hurts", and one of Linda Ronstadt's biggest songs, "When Will I Be Loved". Other great Everly songs are "Wake Up Little Susie", "Till I Kissed You", "Cathy's Clown", and "Walk Right Back".

I have another name for the fifties list: Buddy Holly. He is one of those who died in the plane crash sung about in "American Pie". My fave Buddy Holly (and the Crickets) tunes are "Maybe Baby", "That'll Be The Day", and "Every day" (a very sweet song, unlike the other two rockers.) The Big Bopper, best known for the suggestive phone conversation song, "Chantilly Lace", and Ritchie Valens, whose big hits were "La Bamba" and "Come on, Let's go!" also died in that plane crash in Iowa February 3rd,1959, "The day the music died".

One thing you should know about The Everly Brothers is that they are pioneers of folk-rock and close-harmony singing. They have influenced several musical acts of the 60's and beyond; such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, Bee Gees, Righteous Brothers and many others. It’s actually a pretty sad song, he’s not singing about a ‘dream girl’ he’s singing about a real girl that he can’t be with. He says “I need you so that I could die” implying that the only way that he’s going to eventually die having lived a fulfilled life is if he gets this girl, however he can’t so he’d rather stay in bed and “dream his life away” so he could be with her.

@@jamielloyd5849 Agree! I've asked for them to post a list. I just happen to know bc other reactors who have live feeds will instantly respond when they see a request. If they're concerned a video will get blocked, they'll play a lyric video, but even those get blocked sometimes too. I think the channels that have a higher number of subscribers get blocked more often. I understand the reason for blocking videos bc of copyright, but it's kind of sad that it has to resort to blocking reaction videos.

He has a lot of subscribers and it seems like the majority of his videos get blocked now. He's resorted to paying for an account with another service that he uses to upload videos and then includes the link in the comments so people can still watch his reactions.

I love the Everly Brothers, SO many great songs. Cathy's Clown, Devoted To You, So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad), and many others. Another 50s song to react to, is MOVE IT by Cliff Richard and the Shadows. It came out in 1958, and it was the UKs first real Rock and Roll song. He was, like many other influenced by seeing Elvis, and wanting to copy him, and developed his own sound, with the help from his band The Shadows, who had several UK number ones, on their own and also with Cliff. In the early 60s, the Shadows were even knocking their own songs off of the number one spot, with a song that had them and Cliff on. But it all started with MOVE IT. Cliff has just turned 81,and is still singing and touring, and is called the Peter Pan of Pop! He's had hits in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.

Yes! I've been asking for Brenda Lee! I think they should start with "Brenda Lee-Dynamite (early TV Appearance)". That's the KZbin title. It was 1957 and she was only 12 years old. She went on to have the 4th largest number of #1 hits throughout the 60's, with only Elvis, the Beatles and Ray Charles having more. But that first tv appearance will give Jay and Amber a real understanding of why 4 ft 9 in Brenda would always be known as Little Miss Dynamite. And she only got better, of course.

I've always found the Everly's to be slightly scary, mainly for the way they sound like two people with the same voice,....their harmonies have to be the tightest anywhere in the universe. And also because they have some pretty creepy songs! On the plus side, Don played the most wicked rhythm guitar, he's seriously undervalued as a player.
