Good thorough honest review. It's nice to see people who are capable of giving balanced reviews of stuff they own. It's human nature and all too common for ownership bias to kick in.

I love how many points you highlighted of differences between this and the Tesla that so many reviewers miss. Bottom line is that it’s a long video, but you cover a ton of detail, and while I’ve owned an Ioniq 5 for 2 months now, I just watched this video again, and learned a few new things. Thank you.

The lower the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a sound system, the lower the perceived volume at any given setting; that's because you're hearing more of the originally recorded signal and less noise from the speakers and amplifiers. This means you have to crank it a bit higher to get the same effect, but it also means that the sound system is less fatiguing to the ears.

They’re very hard to find. Kyles dad got it for MSRP. They no longer sell for MSRP. That probably was for Kyle’s dad so Kyle could give their dealership some publicity. I love the ionic but started looking at the EV6 and now i think i like that better. People have been paying MSRP at a dealer in Albany NY. I found a dealer near me who charges 1800 over sticker but he gives you a free level 2 charger.

Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 have the best charging speed among electric cars, but the actual charging speed depends on the temperature of the battery pack, which drops when the battery pack is cold or too hot (max. module temperature higher than 45°C). Because the Ioniq 5 does not preheat the battery en route to a CCS charger, charging takes longer in winter. Test results by Bjorn Nyland and James Cheung: when the battery pack minimum temperature is -5°C/23°F to +5°C/41°F: 50 kW 5°C/41°F to 11°C/52°F: 65 kW 11°C/52°F to 15°C/59°F: 73 kW 15°C/59°F to 20°C/68°F: 115 kW 20°C/68°F to 25°C/77°F: 185 kW over 25°C/77°F: 225 kW

Kia and Hyundai are reportedly working on a SW upgrade that will address this issue. Both cars HAVE a batery heater, but it only switches on at -5° Celcius Once this threshold is reprogrammed up to perhaps 15°, owners should be ok.

Great review. Thanks. Would be interesting to see future updates that talk about operating costs (charging cost) with charging at home versus at public battery chargers. Does this have a front view camera? If so, does it automatically engage when put into forward gear? I suppose it disengages at 5 mph?? Interesting stats off your “add-on” screen. Is something like that built into the Ionic’s menu system? Can the Ionic be charged at a Tesla charging station with an interface adapter? With 1/2 hour free charging I understand why you are not charging at home. Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of spending 30 minutes at a charging station on a daily basis. Wonder how long it would take to charge when the battery pack is at -10 F for our midwestern winter climates? Also, something to consider on long road trips in the winter season.

Great video and forward review... I've put 132,000km on my Koma Electric in 2 years and went looking at the Ioniq 5 for my wife a few weeks back. The car is nice, but the dash is a huge turn off. That big display in front if the driver shows so little useful information. The speedometer is blocked by your left hand which if you don't have the HUD is a problem. And sure you can push a button at your knee to access a menu on the infotainment panel to access the heated seats. But just too much distraction going on for the driver with all the diffrent button locations. The Kia EV6 has a centre console gear selector, which could have housed some simple buttons like all thier other models do for quick access items like this. I see a redesign coming quickly for this car..

I thoroughly enjoy all your reviews. Saw this one from a few months ago, but it has more relevance now. We purchased our VW ID4 first edition in 2021. We loved the car. Our only concern was with the software, which VW said would be updated in a few months. That has not been the case. Now there’s a recall for a larger problem with the battery. So we are trading in this car which I still love for a Model Y. Granted, the price drop and rebate have been another reason, but too many problems with VW including opaque messages which keep giving more reasons for delays in updating battery. Thanks for all your work on electrics and I especially like your videos including your wife and adorable little terrier. Patti Mackin Chicago Chicago

Interesting the height in the Ioniq 5, I sat in an Ioniq 5 and sitting correctly for me my head was just rubbing the roof unlike my classic Ioniq which I have a huge space between the top of my head and the roof of the car. Public monies should not be used on proprietary charging standards, a-la Tesla, and that mall really didn't think they need to have put in chargers that ALL EV's can use not a select few remember that could be there for 10yrs and in that time the market will be a lot more EV's. Interesting you can lock the car with the keys in it, my classic Ioniq doesn't allow me to lock the car it beeps at me if I try to lock the car with the keys in it. My classic 28kWh Ioniq also charges the 12V, it has a blue light on the dash indicating that similar to the 5 then. Thanks Dave for another fantastic review you need to be on the channel WAY more, love to see a road trip video like Kyle does sometime in your Ioniq 5.

Great video. I like the discussion about lane keeping and ACC being de-coupled. One thing I just discovered about this car is how to completely turn off lane and steering assist. One big negative up until now was having this on constantly and having the steering wheel "fight" me on one lane roads. Once I learned how to turn off, it's so much better. Still use all the features on multi lane highways but good not having it on smaller roads.

Yes, I agree. Also, regenerative breaking is ONLY useful to control the car coming down a long incline. Those who use it to come to a stop at traffic lights etc.. are just too lazy, and it generates very little charges back to the battery on flat surfaces.

24:52 Thank you so much for clarifying this. I've tried asking so many people because someone told me their passenger had the function and the owner's manual says it doesn't. Now I finally understand. To me, it's a deal-breaker. I want my passenger to be able to recline properly. I think if anyone should have it, it's the passenger. I've done so many road trips as a passenger and wished I had this kind of seat recliner to sleep in the car. I could only imagine how obnoxious it would be if the driver used this function (i.e. crashing at a charging station) and they had a passenger unable to. I know it generally won't be a problem, but if I'm going to drop $60k on a car, I want to not have big issues like that, lack of rear windshield wiper, and having to set i-Pedal every single time I drive. There's so many things to love about the Ioniq 5, though, so it is still #2 for me on what I'd be interested to get, whenever I can. Loved your review. Really well done. Really appreciate the discussion on charging, too. People like to brag on the Ioniq 5 with the claimed 10-80% in 18 minutes, but that's really ideal conditions. Interesting that you need the FOB to open the V2L in the back. You're the first person I've seen mention that, so thanks. Not a huge issue but kinda weird and worth keeping in mind. For the charging algorithm, it might be based in Celcius. 68F is 20C and the jump seemed to happen then. 15C is 59F so maybe there was a jump there, too?
@trex1448
@trex1448 2 ай бұрын
If the Ioniq is charging 30 minutes at nonideal conditions then that means the vws fords bmws are there 45 minutes and longer.
@kyleb8117
@kyleb8117 2 ай бұрын
@@trex1448 Yeah...I personally wouldn't go with any of those (especially Ford). Possibly worth noting my previous car ('15 Leaf S) was around 30-45 minutes depending on how much I needed to charge and that's for a depressing amount of charge (like 50 miles). I luckily ended up finding a killer deal on a 5 y/o Tesla M3LR with FSD and only 32k miles for $16k so Ioniq 5 is far from my mind now. The features of the Ioniq *could* be cool but honestly it's not worth it. You shouldn't have to pay $60k for those features. The base $40k model should have power windows...it's a f'ing electric car. Even if it were a $30k car I'd be iffy on considering it because most of what I like about it is gimmicks. My Tesla has been great and charging has been fast. Haven't gone on a road trip so I don't know how bad the charge curve is on big charges but I've charged it a few times and I wasn't ready to go when the car was.
@trex1448
@trex1448 2 ай бұрын
@kyleb8117 dude you bought a 5 yr old electric car... of course a new Ioniq is more expensive. It has a bigger battery, faster charging, better build quality, bigger cargo space, better interior, better exterior design... the correct comparison would be with a new Tesla 3.
@kyleb8117
@kyleb8117 2 ай бұрын
@trex1448 I wasn't comparing it with that. I'd compare a new Model Y to it. *Edit:* To fully clarify since you obviously missed the point of what I was saying: I was comparing it to ALL EVs in that price range. A car that costs $60k should not be as comparatively pathetic. I was also pointing out that it could be worse on charging because Leaf has it rough (as they're pretty backwards on making cars...they didn't even bother giving the battery proper thermal management in the new models). All Ioniq 5 has going for it is the cool looks and some gimmicks that really don't equate to the high price tag. The charging is just...normal...and even if it always charged in 15 minutes versus 30 is it really that big of a deal? If you're truly an EV owner you understand that 30 minutes to charge is not a big deal. Grab a meal. Go explore a shop. Enjoy yourself.

To me this car isn't ready with the charging. It's the same thing as the Kia ev6 what's the use of buying a heat pump with the car and you have to spend all that time charging the pack up until it reaches 75⁰ or higher to reach optimum speeds?? Maybe I'm not understand this but I feel they need to recall and fix that or give people their money back. I thought the whole purpose of the heat pump was to warm the pack up?? Too much time sitting and waiting. This car is growing on me but I want the leg rest on the passenger side that's crazy not to give the passenger that comfort like they do on the UK/EU cars. Booo! I'd be ok with a bunch of 75kW charging stations if that means they can be cheaper and more populous. As opposed to fewer, but larger high power stations. Especially at shopping centers where you're going to be gone longer. Sometimes my car fully charges before I'm done and have to hurry or go out and move before I'm done in the store. Ideally you'd want a balance of both types. There's only so much power generation out there, so not every station can be 350kW. At least not yet until there are breakthroughs in generation and infrastructure upgrades. I suppose you COULD make every charger stall capable of 150+kW for convenience if enough power is available, and then start limiting power as more users hop on, like V3 Superchargers. The whole station has 0.5 megawatt service, and then is divided up as needed. I still have my Camry because there's just some places I have to go for work that the Tesla can't make, especially in the winter time. In northern MN, I'd be happy if there were just some more lvl 2 stations around. More hotels really need to consider getting some lvl 2 charging available. Even if they can only afford one or two 30A circuits, that would be plenty for overnight charging for most EVs.

About headlights, I read that most Ioniq5 dont have them aligned at preparation time from the factory ie too low to get the best out of them. Even Bjørn could not appreciate them at their best. Just have them aligned at same time as the wheels when getting the car

Thanks for a very detailed review. This is a fair effort from Hyundai. It will sell well. One thing I cannot believe is after seeing a large frunk and an elegantly hidden charge port in a Tesla Model S back in 2012… Most manufacturers still can’t give us these simple features.

I enjoyed your review. I've had my new Limited almost a week now. I'm definitely enjoying it and I drove a 2020 Model 3 for 4 years. The 3 was a great car but I was sort of wanting to go to a hatchback and something a bit easier to get in and out of. Plus I listen to SXM a lot and it always annoyed me that Tesla never adopted a native app. I got a great deal on the Ioniq 5 because it was technically a used car with 400 miles. The first owner determined that after he bought it that it wasn't for him. I actually met him and he was beside himself. He lost roughly $12K. I bought it for less than $47K and the dealer gave me $5,100 more for my 3 than Tesla was going to. So, you paid $600 for the V2L adapter? Hmm? I just got one on Amazon for less than $60. Even Hyundai's V2L is around $200.

Very nice review and lots of nice details. - The one thing that most complain about is that changing settings can be difficult and you have to drill down on menus to make changes and turn things on and off, like heated steering and seats. But my understanding is that the car has a fairly robust voice command system. It would be nice to know what can be done through voice commands. Is there a list somewhere to tell you this information. It would seem using the voice commands would be a one button solution. Any comments? Thanks

I am going to have to test out those voice commands. In my experience, in general, this tech frustrates me as it often misunderstands what I am trying to choose. I do use Siri though often for texting and making hands free calls. So maybe it is worth a look. Thanks for your feedback and thoughts!

I have a Mach-E and the 12v battery dying is also an issue in those cars so I keep a portable charger in my under trunk storage too. Mine died 2 months after I bought it and it had to be flatbed towed to the dealer, took them 9 days to get the parts from Ford and fix it. It's definitely a problem with the new EVs. I have a Blackvue dash cam and after I had it plugged in for a couple weeks the FordPass app started telling me there was 12v electrical system drain coming from the dash cam, even though the cam is set to not turn on at all when the car is off. I'm so paranoid of the 12v dying again that I unplug my dash cam every time I get out of the car now ☹️
@MLHunt
@MLHunt 2 жыл бұрын
Another MME owner here (actually have 2 of them). Heard those stories too. It's a consequence of EVs having those small 12V batteries, probably to trim weight and because it's intended that the LV battery consistently top up off the high voltage system, obviating the need for much 12V stored energy (plus you obviously don't need a lot of stored amps so you can turn a starter). Don't know about Hyundai/Kia but it definitely seems to be something Ford needs to work on.

My girlfriend sewed a slip on 'battery holder' for my visor. I switch out freshly charged 10,000mah batteries to keep my dashcam on while parked without running down the 12v. The USB cable from the dashcam plugs right in. Just a thought!

It looks like the new version will have a wiper…at least for Canada. The rain does not come off with that design. Try winter snow and slop…it sticks to the back window like mud and does not come of from the draft.

also, my defence for 50kw "fast" chargers: on my Model Y, I mostly spend 15-20 minutes charging. a 50 kw would allow me to stop, eat dinner, its nicer on battery than the 350s, and also, due to the expense of a 150kw/350kw chargers, the 50 kw ones would allow rural areas to get chargers where otherwise there may not be anything. Yeah, it will suck to charge at like, a fifth of the car's posibility, BUT, it may just get somebody enough charge to get home, and considering the dependability of the EA and CHargepoint networks, at least here in the western states, I've have been stranded by a EA station where I was able to find a state of Utah or similar 50 to 62 kw charger that, while at a longer charge time, got me home. NOt sure sate would have afforded to put a 150 or 350 charger in that part of southern Utah. I'd love (now that I'm getting Ioniq 5, and drive TEsla Model 3) to have 150 and 350s everywhere, assuming they would work reliably, AND that there woudl be plenty of it in rural areas.

Could you please comment on the driver’s headrest? I’ve seen complaints that it’s tilted too far forward and has no adjustments other than height. As far as the fob for the ID4 goes maybe the battery in it needed changing I have a 2017 Alltrack I've changed the battery twice for the very reason you mentioned. Honestly I'll never purchase a VW again, I like my Alltrack but the newer VW's have ALL touch (capitative) controls which are difficult to use in a moving vehicle and IMO Dangerous because you have to take your eyes from the road and THAT in itself is a deal breaker for me.

If Tesla tends to stay closer to trucks that is just a factor during development. Tesla improves constantly with updates and if people mention that, Tesla had possibly made a change or improvement since the last time your drove it. That is a non-starter to criticize about. It is unlikely that Hyundai or any other oem will be making such improvements any time in the near future.
