Chris Mears - Narrowboat In Slow Time

From last year I've changed how I live on my narrowboat. What is different to last year is how I store coal which actually is a incremental improvement and a game changer as it’s so easy. This is an introduction to a theme that will continue over the coming weeks as Winter is approaching. Also a bit of a cruise and chat along the towpath.

I have permanent moorings but im fuming that they are charging continuous cruisers more money! They make enough out of us. I think we should all stand united and demand they keep the charges as they are.

Interesting comment Sean. I think there will be a greater push back than the CRT believe. It’s certainly brewing. I go to Navigation Advisory Group Meetings or it’s a sub group for the main one. There is a lot of group think and I’m the one pushing back. I’m the only one so I don’t have a voice. We do need to stick together and get louder in what we feel and believe. I’m going to do a vid on it. Stand by. Thanks for the comment Sean and have a great week.

I believe that the CRT is looking upon the Continous Cruisers as a cash cow. But they fail to see the good input into the canal system they provide. One using the waters helps reduce the build-up of silt, as this will only get worse, and the Canal system will resemble how they looked in the 1960s. Almost derelict and dumping grounds. I'm looking forward to Sunday's post.

An interesting viewpoint Geoff. One that only a man with experience can give. I don't have either the knowledge nor experience yet to truly understand but, I'm getting there and I'm a reasonably quick learner. No-one wants to return to the 60s but without a change of culture, you may be right. Have a great week and thanks for the comment.

Morning Chris. Your ability to meld gorgeous imagery with superb videography, your canal life, your journey, and the challenges and successes both within yourself and the wider environment and system is for me just fabulous. How many pieces of coal for 9 hours...blimey..just amazing but proof positive that you continue to evolve to your newish environment and create your harmony. You mentioned that time has changed for you..I can understand that, as the anxiety and stresses are flipped. Brilliant vlog Chris.

Thanks a very well crafted and complimentary comment John. Thank you. Of course, I’d like to say it’s all planned and although it’s a choice to move on a dry day…why move on a wet day; the imagery is just a gift of nature at the time. That said, drying to get in the background as I speak is something that I’m conscious of. Meat on the bones on Sunday. Hopefully it’ll be enjoyable. Thanks for the comment and additional support. I very much appreciate it.

Thank you Jacqueline. Open discussion about life I feel is important. I’ve met a few people just recently who have bought a boat on the back of the Tube thinking it’s all roses. Well it might be for some but I did have to give an honest answer when she asked what winter would be like. The second one will be easier though I informed her. Have a great week and thanks for the comment.

Nice one Chris. Interesting to watch you slowly build towards a presentable list of "reasonably expected requirements " for CRT to consider. Also, I especially love how you've adapted to your 'new' life. Great to see you transfer your army skills to living on a boat. By the way... the coal in tidy, clean, easy-to-handle boxes.... great idea.

As always, a feast for the eyes. I suspect that is a big part of the real craft of making a good video--choosing the time of day, the lighting, and the location. Given all that, I like that you show the flip side of all the pleasant aesthetics, such as the weeds in the lock, and the shallow pounds. The coal tubs are another great touch. There's an unpleasant underside to keeping warm, but you have solved it in an orderly and practical way. Balace is essential. Concentrate on one aspect or ignore another and the picture is skewed. Should your videos be longer or shorter? I'd say just follow your gut on that one. It is what it is. People will watch, because they like what they see.
@chrismears-inslowtime

Thanks for the support Peter. The weather this year has been quite good for filming. Early morning means less harsh light and better views. Coal boxes makes sense. It has a drawback, discussed on Sunday (today). Following my gut is one thing but the edit is another. Focus on one topic and stay on point and the edit will decide the time. 20 mins max but try for 15. Have a great week.

We have our chimney sweep visiting this morning, so what you ask? Well it's twelve months ago you were having trouble with getting your stove to go and I had a chat with him for some advice, where's that time gone? For what it's worth, I've always been told that a single boat going up in a double lock, if you open the ground paddle on the same side as the boat first, the water goes to the other side of the lock and then flows back across to keep the boat steady. Once the water has settled open up the rest as normal it works for me (or the last time I was afloat!!) As far as the vlog - just keep them coming as you wish, we all want to hear and see what you've got to say. Have a good one.

Agreed with the ground paddle and for the life of me I don’t know why I did the other side, other than that ground paddle was damaged or locked. It could have been just not concentrating too. The time has indeed flown by. Thanks for the advice Bill and have a great week.

Hi Chris, You appear to have a great life on the water and I am so glad that you are finally enjoying your lot, I think your videos are perfectly fine as they are and they don't really need that much tinkering with, That is just my opinion but you have all the bases covered and give your viewers a reasonable view of life on the water and what's going on in Chris' head. I look forward to Sunday as always take care, and all the best mate- Paul 👍

Great vlog Chris. Loving the coal in tubs. What a neat idea. Looks so much better and easier. Very valid points. The CRT needs to work WITH and not AGAINST the canal community. It needs to gain sponsorship in new and respectful ways and practical ways to improve facilities and not the opposite. Be good if you could interview them. No one better for the job I say. Every best wish Chris.

Thanks Trevor. I think the problem is culture. The Chi Exec has created a culture that can be perceived as anti boating. Maybe that's not the case but, actions speak volumes. If the culture was aligned differently, I'm sure the boating community would feel respected and would do more to assist. It would be interesting to work out the statistics of those who volunteer. Boaters, footpath users, cyclists, etc. Im going to do something about it and I'll inform you all how soon. Thanks for your support Trevor. Have a great week.

I missed seeing you this morning with my coffee because I overslept 🤣. But I watched this afternoon with my glass of wine 🍷. You brought up many good points. I believe continuous boaters will take care of the canals and it’s weekenders who don’t understand the importance of keeping things clean. I appreciate the time and effort you spend putting together a great video and the time spent finding the right music. You get an A+! Or is it the 🍷 talking 😂
@chrismears-inslowtime

Overslept or a lie in. However the glass of wine in the afternoon might just beat the morning coffee. I’m still too young in experience to understand the demographic of the difference between leisure boaters and CC. I do get the impression the CRT want to reduce the boats on the canals and push people in marinas. They will fail unless the CRT provide a CRT marina which provides a functional facility at a reduced cost. Almost a social housing style marina. Thanks for the comment Shoan. Have a great week.

By the way my wife and i enjoy the format you present your vlogs in and look forward each week to the next interesting topic. Narrowboating is not just about locks and motoring down the canals. There are many interesting aspects of that way of life. Keep the content going please in the manner you present it. Never doubt yourself mate. Cheers Keith and Helen) from way over here in Australia. we are moving very quickly toward Summer and temps of over 30 degrees. Winter starts next week with the clocks going back. It probably isn’t winter weather nor the actual start of winter as that is about December but it’s when it starts to feel like it. Thanks for the compliment. I hope it means longevity as I always have something to say about this life. As I move forward during winter there’ll always be something to discuss. Have a great week.

Thanks Chris, The lock situation was the deciding factor that has kept me from not buying a Narrowboat, they would give me major anxiety as a solo cruiser. I know there are lots of women single handedly negotiating them every day, I know ifollow them 😂 Holidayed down south on a Narrowboat that's when I fell in love with them but I wasn't flying solo at the time. The multifuel stoves are wonderful aren't they, I have 2 and when they are on I switch cental heating off, it's all about controlling them correctly. Once again thanks for another great vlog, keep them coming 😊

Chris: regarding the removal of bins on the canals, there was a short article in the CRT Canal Boaters’ Weekly Update in the summer. It said that because the CRT is having to cut back, they will gradually reduce the number of rubbish bins, including those for dogs. I did complain about this but I don’t know if the CRT is interested.
@chrismears-inslowtime
@chrismears-inslowtime 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Cutting back is one thing but they are leaving boaters in a precarious position. People like me who can hang on and wait until I find a bin or deposit rubbish in local bins daily because I have the time is doable for me. Those who have more than one on the boat will produce more packaging. Every action creates a reaction. Let’s see what happens. Perhaps cutting back on the amount of execs would help too. I’ll take a look and read up on it. Have a great week.

I am stopping my good will with the CRT no removing weed no fixing minor things if it’s difficult to open the gate or heavy weed I am calling the CRT to help if I pay more they need to supply more. We are enjoying your vlogs, so keep going. We also agree that living on the water is relaxing even though it brings its own set of challenges. A snippet of information for you to consider and checkout. As a marina moorer about 10% of our mooring fees go to the CRT for access and water usage, in my case that's about £330 a year that I pay indirectly to CRT via the marina owner in addition to my licence fee. Does this surcharge go some way to balance the extra fee that CRT is going to charge those who choose not to use marinas? One other point, I think you are opening the ground paddle on the wrong side so that the incoming water is pushing your boat away from the edge. Try opening the same side first.
@chrismears-inslowtime
@chrismears-inslowtime 9 ай бұрын
Interesting point on the marina costs. I didn’t know that but did understand the marina pays for the water drifting within it. Ground rent in effect. It’s understandable those costs are passed on although frustrating. Perhaps it is worth mentioning when I discuss life as a CC and CRT. Agree with the paddle thing. Not sure why I did it that way as I ordinarily open the correct paddle. I even taught that to Janine. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your week.

Loved this week's vlog and can totally relate to all your comments re CRT. Excuse me while I rant about the EA. They must have spent thousands putting an enormous picnic table at least 12ft long on a concrete base at one of our locks on the Medway. Beside it a miniscule bin which was over flowing for at least a week. All the grass beautifully mown. We travelled up river, then down and each time I was so angry . The EA visited the lock whilst e were passing through and I tackled them about it. There were 3 of them, standing around scratching their heads doing nothing! When I asked them if they were going to empty the bin and why build such a large picnic table and supply such a small bin they had a ridiculous reply, " if we put a larger bin then that would get filled up too" but you should have seen the amount of rubbish that was placed around this bin. I've got photos but don't know if I can add to this comment. I mean do gongoozlers and picnickers pay a licence fee? No! And yet this is where the EA are spending their money whilst the river remains undredged and the banks remain overgrown! And the locks themselves poorly maintained. You think your gates are difficult to open 🤣😂 There are signs on all the locks saying no swimming and no fishing,(which they don't police because we see kids closing the gates and using the locks as a swimming pool) and yet they encourage people to congregate around the locks by supplying picnic tables! Anyway, rant over! Just to say our sympathies are with you and we will definitely be watching the sandbag Sunday rant!
@chrismears-inslowtime
@chrismears-inslowtime 8 ай бұрын
Great rant. Love it and it is typical of the lack of thinking that is applied to most things today. I like the idea but the lack of thinking is evident by the bin size. The answer is another typically lazy answer. I believe the workers would know that was wrong but the management wouldn't allow them to have an input so they just do as they're told. It's the same on the GU haven spoken to a worker. 'No point offering advice as they just don't listen'. The CRT have 4 KPIs to get public money. That money has strings attached. It's for the wider public, not for the boating community. The greater digging I do in policy, the more things start to make sense. I don't like it as it shows a conflict of interest. The believe there needs to be a change at the top. He's been there too long and has created strategic drift within the Trust. Bit deep. Soz. Have a great week Kevin.

Thoroughly enjoyed your content this morning Chris. IMO, you have changed. I reviewed an earlier episode when you were struggling with fire and as a consequence spitting brimstone. Fast forward and today, you are sharing philosophy. If you haven’t already, can I suggest ‘Meditations’ by Marcus Aurelius. At your core, your are clearly a Stoic although, a sensitive one. Please consider your own candidacy for CRT council membership. I think it would be good for the council and for you.

A lot of the comments this week have been the reason for my candidacy application being submitted. It all appears to make sense with the 4 KPIs initiated to get public money. The strings attached are about the public enjoying the waterways. The CRT appear to forgotten we are the public too. We pay, few others do. I think my service life has been for a reason. To tackle this issue and help the canals flourish in a different way. I'll have a look for the book. Thanks Mark. Have a great week.

You may find it easier when rising in a wide lock, to open the ground paddle on the SAME SIDE as the boat first. The outlet is usually below the hull so the water flow passes under boat, then rebounds off the opposite lock wall and holds your boat firmly against the side it’s on. Stops it drifting across the lock in most situations.

Thanks Caroline. If I was in charge I would put a difference emphasis on the culture. @philelliot5327 how many other people say it about someone else though. I’m sure it’s a little more complex than we think but I suspect it’s about decisions of prioritising budgets. Also gathering intelligence on the ground which I think doesn’t happen enough or at all. I would do it that way and engage more. CRT don’t engage unless we read the CRT webpage. That’s lazy management style. Contemptuous and arrogant. Mr Perry should read the Art of War. Written in 500BC. It’s still core reading for military officers and is about strategy. Lessons are still valid. Thanks for the comments and enjoy your respective weeks.

I know I would really enjoy sharing time and a pint with you in real time as we exchanged a rambling conversation about our passions and life experiences. we are entering a period of time where those in high places, earning fancy salaries and failing to achieve what they are paid to do, are finding more ways of getting us to pay more for receiving less services. my Glasgow council want me to pay £50 a year for a licence to take my garden waste away which they do as part of my council tax at present. The waste i put into my brown bin along with my food waste, they will still pick up the brown bin for free with food waste only, sorry for rant but it ties in with your increase in charges. Could agree more Harry. Mr Perry earns more than the PM. As for local councils I do wonder what pressures that are under from central Govt. Of course, in Scotland you effectively have you’re own with slight oversights. I suspect it’s rather like the CRT is the local Govt for me with Westminster oversight. Not that central Govt do much. But how can we hold CRT to acct. I’m looking into it. Have a good week and thanks for the support.

I think we all change a little with time and new experiences, I suppose the secret is to try and not get too cynical about people and life. You mentioned trying to put stuff that you can’t alter or have an effect on out of your mind, I agree completely and is something I always tell the kids as they get older. Let me be the 94th member of the Senior Service to give you a bit of, hopefully, useful advice. Also as a single handed, share ownership so not full-time, narrowboat user I can vouch for it's effectiveness. When coming up a wide lock, single boat, open the ground paddle on the same side as the boat is. The water coming out the gate crosses the lock, gets forced upwards and then back across the lock and this keeps the boat against the wall. I very rarely even go across to open the other ground paddle as I don't think it saves much time and I would rather be at hand next to the boat. If there's a hurry because of another boat, well they would come up and help, like courtesy dictates 😂 As you would expect from the Senior Service this is not original thought, but learnt from someone much more experienced, might have been ex-RAF but that's a bit hard to believe😂😂😂😂 Regards Mike

Thanks for the tip Mike. I’m not sure why I opened the off side ground paddle. I don’t normally get it wrong and wouldn’t ordinarily have done so unless I had an unthinking moment or the near side paddle was locked. I can’t remember and it appears to be ok on closer inspection of the vid. I’m still learning and trying out new ways in order to either understand or tweak what I do. To do what you’ve always done nothing improves or changes. I think I’m about 70% there. Have a good week and thanks for the comment Mike.

I too have bags stored all over. I think Sunday may be useful. It's all about airflow and watching and learning the flames. It'll take a season. The secret is heat the stove and keep it hot. Don't clean the stove. More coal creates heat, then turn the airflow down to reduce the burn. They stay hot and burn less. That's the theory. You're get it Craig. Hope all is well. have a great week

The Canals were built for Narrowboats & Barges but the CRT seem to be biased towards Rowers and towpath users. Back in the 1970's I had a nine foot inflatable and under British Waterways Board rules I had to pay the same licence as a 45 foot Narrowboat. Towpath users and Cyclists had to have a licence to use the towpath, except where it was a public right-of-way. If they brought that back it might help pay for the fancy foot paths etc. They should stop using wildlife as an excuse for not cutting back the weeds and reeds. The wildlife survived on the canals back in the day when the canals were maintained.

Hi Chris - another excellent video. 15 bits of coal for 9 hours 😆 Like the systematic approach. Worrying to hear CRT's lack of investment in canals. Have a question - how does boat life compare now to your perception before you stepped on board and would you say your comfort/happiness with living on a narrowboat is increasing? Are the CRT and the hassle of single-handed boat life changing your outlook and likely future plans? I hope not and keep the vlogs going. All the best. Ian

Good question Ian. The first year, (9 month) I won’t deny was difficult for me. Loneliness was the killer along with learning how to keep the fire burning. It’s all a steep learning curve. Understanding water and how to make it last too was a skill I needed. Heat is no longer a problem and neither is loneliness. Having worked in a team for 4 decades I’m now getting used to my own company and enjoying it. Water: I’m getting used to using it all up. That’s hard now. The CRT must have an agenda. I need to understand it and they need to be transparent. I’m going to keep pushing in the hope one day I’ll understand and I’ll inform. Something they should do. I’m going to discuss this topic on a future Sunday. Thanks for the question and have a great week

If CC-ers are being charged more, then maybe CRT would be courteous enough to give something back in return like make the rules for CC-ers clearer. After all a premium price deserves a premium service. Where is the Quid-Pro_quo with better facilities and services? It smacks to me of exploiting the increasing number of continuous cruisers just for money. My argument about the extra charges for continuous cruisers is the CC-ers keep the canals clear during winter by cruising all year round. Without that traffic, the silt or weed may build up even more. CC-ers are also more likely to visit the furthest reaches of the system, keeping them going. CC-ers save CRT money, so why should they pay more?

Interesting point made Mark. Thanks. I agree. I am going to do my own version of what I think about CC life and what CRT should do. I’ll also make a judgement call on how I would organise it given the opportunity. The emphasis would be from the bottom up. I get the reasons for the decisions but I also think those in charge have a blinkered view as I don;t think they get out on the ground. The execs ought to. Let’s see what response I get. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.

@@chrismears-inslowtime Agree 100 percent Chris. There doesn't appear to be any input from boaters apart from the "surveys" stuffed with loaded questions. This seems a very top-down take-it-or-leave-it attitude. What are CC-ers going to get for the money? Or will it just disappear into some pot that will be poorly managed? I get there are liabilities like the reservoir at Whalley Bridge, but surely CRT could negotiate a government grant with preferential rates to get the repairs done? After all the reservoir is a threat to life. It all seems a bit HS2-ey, management-wise. lol.

Year two, Paddington to where I am now and plan to go to Warwickshire; a little bit at a time, granted. In 5 years, the cost increases by 75% plus inflation and the above the rate of inflation the CRT will demand. It’s not the extra as such, it’s how it was underhandedly done. Enjoy your week.

I'm sure you'll find that as the years go by the CRT will be removing more and more of the services. They have already cut back on the number of elsan, rubbish, and water points that were available a year or two ago. It makes me wonder what the license fees and other fees your paying is going towards? The canals aren't being taken care of as by the overgrowth, shallow morrings, closed facilities, etc. In the next five years as the funding becomes nonexistent it will only get worse than it is right now. For a country like England that prides itself on preserving it's history, they're not doing an adequate job now in 2023, so what will it be like in 2028? It all boils down to charging boaters more and giving them less and less and less.

All good and valid points. I’m still learning but as I get to know people who have more knowledge and experience your comment rings a certain familiarity. I’m going to do a vlog on it. I’ll also inform CRT. It shouldn’t be too much of a shock for them I’m sure but I want to start influencing in a way they probably haven’t encountered and want to measure the effect. Interesting times ahead. The Chief of the Air Staff new me by name and I was just a Sqn Warrant Officer, so I’m sure Richard Perry is soon going to learn it!!!

Who are you talking to ? It appears you’re making your point to the subscribers or viewers watching the channel as you’re referring to me in the second person. It appears your incredibly sad wanting to put people down. Maybe if you knew the reason for the Maximise Life name you wouldn’t mock it. But then I wouldn’t put it passed you. If you want to be rude, expect a retort. If I’m boring don’t watch and then have the emotional intelligence just to move on.

If you have nothing better to do with your life than make such a comment may I suggest you research a Village that doesn't have an "Idiot", you would be a perfect fit! Without the military you would certainly NOT enjoy the democratic life style which allows you to make such remarks. Many have died protecting your right to be a total prat, remember that. Respect for both self and others, teamwork, loyalty, work ethic are just some of the basic building blocks of daily military life, all of which you appear to lack! And as for your criticism of "Maximise Life" do some research. Watch the Vlog where Chris explains the why! Then take a very deep breath and realise an apology might be a the "Right thing to DO". In the mean time good luck finding a village, I'm happy to act as referee on your CV!

Hi markbygrave5956 How are you doing? Probably not your real name but hey ho! I note you have failed to respond to either Chris' or my response to your appalling, ill-considered and offensive remarks! May I enquire as to why there is such a delay? You were so quick to comment on the original Vlog!!!! Maybe you are realising what the military has done for your quality of life, or maybe you are viewing past Vlogs to appreciate the emotional attachment Chris has in naming his boat as such? OR maybe you are having difficulty finding a village that is prepared to accept you! You are clearly a very angry person and, having failed to seek the therapy required, only wish to impose that anger on others to make yourself feel better. You have an option! If Chris Mears upsets you that much then DON'T press the button on your remote to download his content! Very easy actually and clearly much better for your health! Mel

Chris this pound was emptied 3 times last winter in a matter of 24 hours James was moored next to me someone emptied the pound at 6 0 clock and we refilled it and then the same evening they emptied it again at 9 0 clock , so this time we put a camera in the bushes , the next morning I went to Northchurch got back to my boat at 11 and all the boats were on the mud they had emptied the pound again , I say them I think it’s one disgruntled resident I’m moored just above dudswell locks but I’m going to move tomorrow anyway good luck I might try and catch up with you , I went down the locks with sweary Dan last week but I think we are going to hook up before Xmas

I think it's criminal damage as it's not just about the boats. It's a waste of water too. I stayed awake for the following night to do some night fishing. I didn't have a rod but you get the point. Not a bite. Would have made good content had it come off. Slow move to LB this weekend. That swing-bridge to do. Have a great week Peter.
