In what world does the USER decide what data gets migrated during device replacement? Not a single company on Earth would do that, except maybe 4 seasons total landscaping. How would texts from only two specific days, the most important days be deleted during migration? Sorry, I work in private sector cloud computing, and none of this makes sense. It smells 100% like a cover up. Data is backed up, then it's backed up again. Day after day after day. Backup management software can compare differences in both metadata and record data on a daily basis, and removal of records from a backup source is auditable and you can see exactly who manipulated data and when they did it. Any governmental employee within 100 miles of the Capitol (figuratively) on Jan 6 should have had all electronic messaging and contents of their devices frozen and quarantined, full stop.

My guess is that those two days were not the only days of missing data, unless, oddly, those were the only days requested. If it were up to me, I would also want a bunch of other days. But I do agree, that the DOJ should have stepped in ASAP. I know that Garland is getting grief from a bunch of people, even some Republicans, about the way he has handled Jan 6. But to be as generous as I can to him, this political climate is more charged than when Nixon was in the WH. That being said, he made a huge mistake trying to placate right-wing hardliners, who would only be satisfied if Garland does nothing. The plot is definitely thickening, with Trump thinking of announcing his bid to run again to avoid being prosecuted. This may not only backfire against the GOP, but it has no bearing on the Fulton County investigation. Reality having become stranger than fiction!

Having worked in IT management for years and for firms who must adhere to strict FDA guidelines, it is shocking that the SS is using unsecured e-mail servers and doesn't seem bothered by a software or hardware migration not kicked off without a FULL AND SUCCESSFUL BACKUP. There's information that's sensitive for various reasons... and, yeah, there are outright secrets. But those secrets still stay in the records. People don't just get to decide to chuck them into the shredder, incinerator, toilet, eat them, delete them into electronic oblivion, etc.

They must of tested it in staging or some other area where they have those images. Their is always a trace but sounds a bit funny and a practice they do if secrete information doesn’t want to leak. It was perfectly obvious when the initial request was not fulfilled that the Secret Service deleted messages purposely and lied to the committee. We've gotten Document Retention Notices at work when the company was sued. Management and lawyers sit down with everyone to make sure we are crystal clear on what to save (everything) and for how long (until they tell us it's over).
