Ep 61 - Following on from our last podcast where it was proved bands in the charts are on the decline, we ask who's going to expose the next generation to rock/metal music if the radio won't...
We hope it goes without saying, but we will anyway... we tackle this subject from the position of MUSICIANS - and like any decent people we don't like hearing how folks have lost their lives in the events that occurred.

Met you all in Huddersfield a couple of years ago. Bought a cd and T-shirt. You are fine gentlemen and excellent musicians. It was a pleasure.

I think young musicians will always discover and form rock bands. I'm more worried about where the new fans come from. Certainly there's no shortage of young bands playing rock music, but the fans on the whole seem to be ageing. The whole New Wave of Classic Rock thing for example seems to be an almost endless supply of bands largely supported by a relative handful of dedicated fans

My eldest (14) listens to Grunge, metal, punk, and rock. She plays guitar and is constantly learning new songs. So there's one bastion of rock for the yoof 😆 We've also got tickets for Rock City, and Birmingham 🤘

My Dad was into 70s rock (Deep Purple, Led Zep, Yes, Genesis), but for me it was a school friend who had an older brother who was into GnR and Iron Maiden. It was a lot later that I got into the stuff my Dad was into. But this was the 90s... My daughter quite liked Black Sabbath when she was a baby, not so much now she's 4, but I'm working on getting her to play the ukulele as a gateway to a proper guitar...

I love Halestorm too. I once typed in Halestorm to Spotify and missed the 'H' off and discovered Alestorm! :) But they are pretty good too, if you like pirate shanty rock music. Good reminder re: Gojira too. I need to re-listen!

Seeing The Sweet on Top of the Pops performaning Little Willy the buying said single, but the b-side was the one. Couldn't have been more different, it was like a slap across the face, even now 52 years later that opening riff still gets me

We have played our kids a cross section from classical; rock & pop and encourage them to be open minded and don’t follow the crowd. Don’t let them listen to R&B, rap or hip hop though! Making your kids play instruments is the way to Open there eyes.

My son is a big fan of yours since he was probably 8. He's now 12. Billy Balloon Head being a big one for him, another is The Day We Fell. He's listened to my music in the car - Wildhearts and Them Crooked Vultures being early favourites, as well as yourselves . But now he's got as far as AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Metallica and Skindred. I've tried to introduce him to some stuff I'm less keen on, young 'un stuff, because I'm aware that at some point, he's got to find his own taste too. In terms of family friendly festivals, my son and I went to Maid of Stone last year. He loved it! Sadly, we missed it this year to see you. But, he met Skindred at a signing there (his idea and he was cooler about it than me!) and made it to the barrier for them too! We got some looks afterwards as he emerged from in front of the mosh pit! He's now desperate to join me and my friends at Download.

My pre GCSE music was literally just stuck in front of a synth type keyboard. We had to create a Christmas song for the forthcoming school show. Our piss about version of Dub Be Good To Me was selected. Cue mortal embarrassment.

Though to be fair, we also had rock school. A music teacher came in to teach rock instrumentation. I wanted to learn drums, but 13yo me had zero organisation.

My 8 and 11 year old boys listen to rock, metal, indie, grunge, blues etc. All guitar music. Once they're a bit older they will be going to gigs.

So here's a question for you. Radio edits - how much do you have to do with them? I heard Missing on TV on planet rock the other day, and it seems that they're doing an edit that reduces the middle section down, and for me that doesn't quite spoil the song, but it's close...

Question for you... Me and the wife have both started to learn the guitar. She is having lessons, I'm teaching myself via apps and KZbin. I know more chords, she knows more scales and theory. Any advice on which is the best method, in your opinion? Thank you!

I find the music sharing and educating swings both ways. I take my daughters to a lot of concerts, some of which they like and some they don’t, but I also will listen to songs they recommend to me and will go to some gigs they want to see. I suffer through a lot of lame acts, but every now and then they point out a good song to me. What’s the last good artist you’ve had someone turn you on to?

I've never really tried to influence kids , they've always obviously listened to the music. I play, but whenever I've said wanna go watch Wagons, they both jump at the chance, they've both seen you twice and hopefully pass on the vibes to their mates

Who does it fall to? Me - Dads and specifically, older dads! Daughter and her mates in the local girls footie team know that, if I'm doing the driving, they'll get Wagons, Scarlet Rebels, vintage Quo, ACDC, GUN, etc. Last quote from one of them - "Can I go with you and your dad cos the music's better?". Guess this backs up your comments about girls and women in rock music as well.

Rock will always be a minority fanbase, it gets no airtime practically. Only in recent years have channels sprouted up playing Rock. As for kids at shows, that falls on us as adults to know when and where we can take them and what can be repeated outside the venues. You have to trust you have brought them up well enough to know what is right/wrong and when words can be used correctly. Most of the kids at shows these days have ear defenders on and it is great to see. younger generations getting the bug of live music. Just a pity it can be expensive these days as the bands I listened to in my youth when they tour can be bloody dear but I stood by my promise to eldest Daughter and took her to see Maiden amongst many gigs and festivals she has been to, it also a great bonding experience.

Speaking of younger rock fans I've got a clip of Baz from the Northumbria University gig last blowing a kiss to a girl on her dad's shoulders and her giving him the middle finger, unfortunately I have no idea how to include it in a comment
