Too many discussion points in this cast. Nice work as always. Baz's comment about being surprised though. Made me think back to where I first heard the Wagons. I'm not reading Kerrang or Sounds anymore. Had to rattle my old brain a bit. But remembered hearing China Plates on planet rock in the car for the first time. And it was like a bell went off. That is right up my alley baby! But it was that joy of finding something new that I instantly loved. And wanted to discover more of. Tell you what though. On the subject of set lists. You would've thought bands could vary it a bit. The scorpions current tour is the same every night from what I can see. At least FM vary the encore (or did on the recent tour). But it must be so bloody boring to play the same songs live every single night for a tour.

Interesting subject. For me, my rule of thumb has always been 1. The band has to write there own songs. 2. Grafted and worked the live circuit for awhile. 3. Evident that they have spent hours practicing there instrument. I can’t settle for anything less! Good music and passionate bands shall always shine through no matter how the band is marketed; I call in ‘the touch’ some bands you can hear in an instant and know they are a cut above the rest.

Completely agree with you here. Did you see the comments by Emily Eavis about there being no new rock bands which is why she didn’t get any at this years Glastonbury? I mean, firstly she’s obviously not listening to the right stations otherwise Glastonbury would know there are loads of great new rock and metal bands but even radio is often scared to take on something new sounding in case they scare off the all important sponsors which is where the money is for them. Same reason why labels want so many pop artists to sound the same as everyone else, so they know they can make money from it but it does stifle something potentially new and interesting coming through.

Apparently Henry Ford said "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses". The algorithm-isation of music has certainly narrowed my horizons. Thankfully I still listen to Planet Rock sometimes or I'd never have heard of Massive Wagons... I have to make a special effort to get out of that rut. Sometimes it's successful, sometimes not...

I was always the knee jerk reactionist. Everyone in school liked U2, I listened to Skid Row. I liked Soundgarden and not Nirvana. I may have cut my nose off to spite my face but to this day I'm still a contrary knob. When GN'R and Oasis came out I avoided them but love Slash's music and Noel Gallagher these days.

Most of the bands I listen to I've 'discovered' at festivals. A lot aren't played on radio stations. Some of these bands are better than those played by Planet Rock etc but just aren't given the chance to be played to a bigger audience.

Recently watched Green Day at Manchester and the set list was very easy to figure out. They played Dookie and American Idiot in the running order they were published ( with a few extra bangers thrown in). Absolutely brilliant show Next big one is Manchester with the MASSIVE WAGONS whoop whoop

probably a blessing that rock and metal isn't mainstream so that it isn't such a manufactured product, pop has been a product since the 80s but it's become much worse as times gone by, the big american stars have been created by record companies and can be destroyed by them aswell as soon as they become out of fashion or over the age of 30.

You're talking about the fact your brain can make quintillions of different combinations of memories based on your experiences and thoughts whilst we've been taught to practice at being guided and simply be a retriever of memory rather than a creator and builder of it, so alot of people are not really practiced at coordinating their own memory system.....which culminates in being overwhelmed by "choice" (all your memories and possibilities) and then simply dwelling in the familiar, going to your own brains library of thoughts and picking out the same book every single time. Then whenever you do look at any other book (thought, idea, memory combination) it seems too unfamiliar, slow to learn or hard to learn because you've got really good at repeating the same thing over and over again. What lays beyond this is the majority of people being far more intelligent than they currently appear.
