TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer has hit out at Net Zero policies, as the Government plans to fast track planning for hundreds of pylons and overhead cables to meet its green targets.
Joined by head of policy at Net Zero Watch and commentator Sam Armstrong, Julia says: “Grant Shapps' job title is Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. It’s energy security or Net Zero. It can’t be both. Pick a side!"

Well I've been through all this in the last two years. - Upgraded our house to Energy Performance A+ - Upgraded to 3 Phase electric supply - Installed Smart Meters and low cost tariffs - Installed Solar Array and Home Battery Storage - Installed multiple EV Chargers and two electric cars It took a long time with National Grid, and was not easy. That's just our house. Now times that by millions. No chance.

What I find fascinating about this "net zero" lunacy, is that not a single one of those who propound this ideology, (and that is all it is), can actually present a valid argument for their cause, yet I could quite easily disprove everything they say, but no one would listen. The great unwashed slavishly buy into this rubbish because the art of open debate has been stifled. Can't all be levelled at the education, (or lack of it), system. "Life of Brian". has become not only the norm for the proletariat , but the behavioral guide for the political elite.

There is another factor involved in the whole energy debate, that is, reducing consumption! Many people don't actually understand what constitutes a low energy consuming device. Example, I recently visited a friend who I hadn't seen in some time and one of the first things I noticed was the number of halogen downlighters and light fittings in her lounge and kitchen, there were dozens of them! This was a big thing in decor in the 80s and 90s but each one can consume as much as 50 watts! Her reaction when I mentioned this was well, they're only lights! And they were all switched on! I did a quick calculation and there was as much as 1000 watts of lighting at that time. When I explained what this meant in terms of the impact on her bill she was shocked. I also explained they could al be replaced by LED lights which would divide consumption by 10. So think of street lighting, motorway lighting, etc, etc, does this all need to be on continuously durig hours of darkness? It could be automated to only be on when needed. Then there all those factories and warehouses that have exterior lighting switched on all night, again, automation could be used to switch them on only when movement was detected. This goes on and on, office buildings, hospitals, car parks, etc, etc, megawatts of uneccesary consumption. However, nett zero is still a ludicrous concept and even if there was a climate issue, a reduction to zero wouldn't be necessary as the atmosphere can compensate for changing levels of co2, so zero emission isn't needed, in fact, a level of co2 is necessary!
@rjones6219
@rjones6219 Жыл бұрын
I've had the same thoughts as you about street/motorway lighting. I live a thousand feet up, and have a panoramic view of W Yorkshire. I see roads meandering over the hilltops, well lit, but I've never seen a car using them, and certainly nobody walks over them. So why consume electricity for the occasional car (which has headlights). In my town back in the 60s, at midnight the lights on side roads would go out, and only the Highways roads would remain lit. We didn't need the lighting then and we don't need it now. I once worked for my local council, and suggested to a finance manager to consider switching off at night. He replied that people would complain citing crime prevention. My response was that there is a street light at the end of my drive, which aided and abetted thieves to steal the wheels off my car twice!

There doesn’t seem to be any joined up thinking in all of this - where is all the extra electricity coming from to fuel the electric cars? It has to be generated somehow, and currently the technology is not nearly developed enough to meet the potential demand. The elements needed to produce these batteries is another concern, and the disposal of said batteries at the end of their usefulness. The fact that co2 is needed for plant life in the world. Stop these ludicrous targets, till science catches up with your plans!

As I understand it, the government (i.e. WEF) want to reduce the number of cars in ownership in general by a huge percentage, regardless of whether they are petrol, diesel, or electric. They want to discourage travel in general, and 'encourage' people into these 15 minute cities. So it is actually in their favour to ban petrol vehicles before electric vehicle ownership gets too high. And if electric vehicle ownership is kept to the privileged few, along with (limited) public transport, large-scale infrastructure upgrades won't actually be needed.

Someone must have the total yearly UK consumption figures for petrol and diesel. Someone else must know the conversion figures in megawatts for that usage to be converted into electricity. Someone else must know the approximate cost of supplying the required megawatts to the national grid. And someone else must have a good idea of the cost of distribution. Its well past the time that the UK public were informed on how much this is actually going to cost the average citizen. Then we need a public vote on the matter. It's high time that the virtue signalling politicians actually informed the public instead of leading us down the most expensive garden path in history.

They love the pledges but not the planning work that goes with it. In 7yrs the government have not even managed to give us the Brexit we voted for and that didn't require creating new technologies. I dont think they have any idea how they're going to achieve this ridiculous target (which is based on useless science anyway). Where's the overall plan, the timelines and deliverables, costings and dependencies. What are the assumptions and constraints? Do we have the resources (no) and what are the risks? This is a huge undertaking, who is project manging it, who are the team of experts who are working 24/7 on this (even then its not enough time). Currently it is be enacted piecemeal by various independent city councils. Has anyone thought how any of this works in the wilds of the North Yorkshire Moors or the Devonshire countryside, where we end up with all the solar panelled fields but can still only use oil or open fires to heat our homes? I don't think they know the current state of the nation properly let alone what they need to do. And by the way, in the polytunnels that grow your food we raise the CO2 levels to around 1000ppm to increase production, anything much below 200ppm and everything dies, we are currently quite low at around 400ppm. Plants need CO2 and there are many studies that show the earth is greening, the antartic ice sheets are expanding and the Great Barrier Reef is recovering (part of a natural cycle according to some experts). P*ss up and brewery comes to mind

A point not raised on a ruinables network, the grid would have to be over engineered. Our current grid is like the road network. Power stations are positioned relatively close to the main consumers (cities, industrial sites etc.). So the high power circuits are reasonably short. However the lower power circuits are fed off these for the smaller urban areas, and from these, further lower power circuits for remote locations. However, with ruinables, it could be that the north west of Scotland has very strong winds and lots of power, but in the south east of England there's SFA! So the implication is that high power circuits have to be built up in the far NW, to carry the power to the rest of the country. But this is volatile position and the source can and will shift. So now you have a shifting power source. How do you manage it, how do you balance the grid?

It’s essential this country sets aside net zero and re-invests in coal, oil and gas immediately. We have an ongoing nuclear plan (years late because of the dithering of the previous governments, mostly Labour). With these energy sources we have a diverse energy portfolio which doesn’t rely on foreign countries. By improving energy diversity and security of supply, we would also tackle the cost of living, which stems directly from energy costs. Lower the energy price, lower the price of almost anything. It’s the only sensible energy plan for this nation and would be a win-win for any government. They can thank me for the advice. I’ll have to leave immigration to someone else to solve, though.

The electricity grid was designed around having large col fired power stations in the middle of the country supplying electricity to large urban industrial centres in the middle of the country. Now the entire grid has to be literally turned inside out to bring renewable energy from offshore wind turbines. On top of that the total demand for electricity is to go up by 50%. It took 50 years to build the grid - it simply cannot be rebuilt and expanded in size in such a short amount of time.

How about finding solutions instead of whining? Study how Denmark are supplied with ~50% renewable energy and 115% during peak time. 95% power lines are now in the ground. All without nutters going berserk or broke... 🤷🏼 Good luck with your reactionary clown show 🥱

Those MP’s And the majority of the general public might like the 12 point plan, but I doubt if the unelected blockers (House of Lords, Civil Servants, the Courts and miscellaneous pressure groups) will support it.

CO2 has no correlation with temperature. So the arguement is false. We all want clean energy, but first we want energy. We forget that without greenhouse gasses the worlds average temperature would -15 deg C. Planets response to increasing CO2 is higher food productivity and greening of the planet. We are already a bankrupt nation. Bank of England holds only £200 billion in gold, covid cost us 300 billion. What we do have is a lot of debt and yet keep printing money we cant redeem.
