Thanks Lois it is a fun little get away and I really enjoy the fire on cold days which we will be getting a lot of very soon now. I'm no winter person either and around here sometimes it seems like it is never going to end.

Great update! Squirrels are kind of cute, I have a couple resident ones who eat all fallen seed and sometimes fool around in the garden. Never had a coddled egg, the girls look well and nice you can sit with a good book and cup of tea in your cabin. Stay warm :)

Oh that sounds really neat, I have never heard of the breed. And looked them up, it said alot their back ground comes from cornish and white plymouth rock. So you might end up with white hens that look the Matlida with a smaller comb. Very cool. I know she will be a good foster mother and your three broody cochin as well. If they have learned to stay on the same nest.

Thank you. I agree squirrels are cute the only problem is if they get in your house they are basically just a rat with a bushy tail. The cabin is far enough away from the house that I don't mind feeding them out there. I love coddled eggs they are like having a soft boiled egg that was cooked with seasoning inside the shell. I butter the coddler add salt and pepper and they are also nice with herbs like chives and parsley added. I'm really enjoying the fire, peace and quiet in the cabin.

Thank you. The squirrel doesn't seem to bother the birds but they don't seem to trust him. The cabin isn't all that far from the house I can be out there in just a few minutes, at least this time of year. If we get a lot of snow I will need to use snowshoes.

Your squirrels are alot cuter, than our VA grey tree rats. I am looking forward to seeing Lucky's reaction to snow. Sorry to hear that he has knocked Prince off as ruler, but I hope he will be a good rooster like his father, and will eventually look after the hens as Prince did. And that Prince's easy going attitude will keep him well your in flock as beta rooster. Though since Lucky is half Barred Rock, if you do want more chicks next spring, maybe you can isolate him and a some of the

Thanks Freida I love coddled eggs. You will have to experiment to see how you like them best for me 8 minutes placed in the water after it has come to a boil, this produces an egg with soft yolk but the white is mostly solid, it's all a matter of personal taste. I butter the sides of the coddler and add a piece of butter to the top along with salt and pepper it is also very good with herbs added like chives and parsley. It's have fun with your coddler day.

I was expecting this to happen but at least they aren't really fighting. Lucky is so much bigger I was sure he would end up at the top of the pecking order. Sometimes I go in the coop and find Leah resting in one of the hen's nests, most unusual for a rooster. He sort of looks at you as if to say it's the only way I can get any peace and quiet.

My "equipment" is a few hoses that I bought at home depot, a few nails, and some clean plastic buckets that I bought feta cheese in at Costo. I drill about 3 holes in each large tree then just jam a hose into each hole tightly and then run it to a bucket that I have hanging from the tree. Works great and cost almost nothing. Maybe I'll make a video on it if I remember to next spring.

Squirrels - maybe a baffle half way up the pole would work. I had one to stop cats climbing and it did the job. I just made a plastic cone and stapled it to the pole and it stopped the cats getting a launch position or getting a grip if they tried to jump from the ground. A more elegant method I changed to was two lengths of plastic gutter around the pole and overlapped in such a way that nothing could grip an edge from the other side - each gutter was inside the other on one edge.

Good luck, Dale, with your efforts to bar squirrels from your bird feeder. My neighbor has battled squirrels for years. His latest effort has a feeder hung at the middle of a stretched wire rope with an over-sized polyethylene hood. Amazed, he reports that squirrels are still dining on his bird feed. Also, those red squirrels are nasty little critters - I've seen many scaring off gray squirrels twice their size.

Oh yes. I kept dried corn on the cob for the squirrels & they got their share of birdfeed. If they ran out of corn, one of the squirrels would get on the end of a tree limb that looked into house and sit there & fuss until I came out to feed them

Nice video! You'll end up living in the cabin and letting the house! We have a tiny house in the garden which we use to store our books and in the Summer go there to read but Andy's talking about putting heating in it, so it would actually be a great place to live. It used to be a Bakery/Breadoven, when this was a Coaching Inn. The Chicks are looking good, Lucky is a fine big rooster but often it's the little fast moving ones that win out in the end, they just bide their time. Best Wishes!

Yeah the squirrels are determined little guys, but I guess they get hungry too. This is likely one of the two squirrels that kept me company all summer long when I was building the cabin. When I was working on the roof they would climb a tree to get on my level and chatter at me not sure that they approved of me moving into the neighbourhood but now that there are sunflower seed they are feeling better about it. We are supposed to get minus 15C this weekend.

I just sent you a video of a squirrel on a greasy pole. Richard Peek was having the suet balls that he put out eaten by a squirrel that has leaping on to the pole that held the food. His solution was to grease the pole :-) It is now -10C over here in FInland with light powdery snow which is drifting badly. Trains are running late and the snow ploughs are out.

40 years ago, I helped to raise two wild red squirrels. One was sick and the other took it to a friend's door step and shouted until she was heard. The other was a male. I had raised hamsters and such, so I was chosen to help them. They were fine in the big cage I had, and I let the female out to play. She never minded going back in.The little male was lethargic (near dead when I got them) and I fed him with an eye dropper for a few days, adding vitamins to bread and milk. I gave her the usual things I gave my other rodents, and some things like graham crackers and raisins. As his strength improved, I gave him the same foods and took him out to play too. They never did damage and were a delight to watch. Most of all though, they seemed to like to scamper about at first, then follow me around, and then sit and talk to me for along time....sometimes they'd bring me something like a raisin, or a spool of thread they found... They seemed to want me to explain what I was doing, like a toddler would do. So I spoke to them and showed them and they watched. (I felt like Annie Sullivan with Helen Keller lol) I learned a lot about them from the weeks I had them. I had no idea they had so many sounds and could convey so many things to me through their sounds and actions. They are so intelligent and these were so kind and trusting that I'd loved to have kept them. They were slow to finally dash to nearby trees when they were released. (One ran to me in leaps and bounds and scampered up my pants leg and sat on my shoulder chittering loudly at me, right in the face when I set him in the grass and walked a ways away a few weeks earlier... so I know it wasn't time to do that yet. I took it slowly, a bit at a time) ...but finally it was late summer and it had to be done if they were going to survive the winter. I knew I couldn't keep them because they didn't belong to me. ...Knowing the people who worked there were kind people, I released them near Mills Mansion where I believed they might find assistance if they needed it, as they had done before.... I have often wondered what became of them ... but since they were so intelligent and capable, I like to believe they did fine.
