With all due respect to contractors, if you can renovate in Portugal, you can do anything! James, you run into so many transition points between the old and the new and you always come up with a good solution! It is so good to see the work progressing with Jonathan helping you calmly and carefully. It is terribly hot to be doing that kind of work but at least you have the digger! I’m always amazed at your and bothers skills taking a sows ear making a diamond out of it! ❤❤ I faced a similar problem like your old roof, couldn’t take out the scraps as that would weaken the wall. So instead I cut away what I could using a masonry saw, then hand trawling concrete into the gaps.maybe that will work here. Do you need to double up the wall? To handle the added weight of the roof?

There’s concrete at the bottom, and literally about a foot of clay to the level we need. The back fill is tiny and the original clay there is like concrete. A lot of the back fill is only 6 inches from the wall, plus it’s hard to tell on the video but it’s only 2ft deep in total. Looks more because we removed so much from the front, but that’s going back.

Any dpc in the block wall or a linked membrane from the dpc to the back of the blocks before you back fill them? Not sure on Portuguese Buildings regs so I may be talking rubbish but if in UK it would be needed. Good luck🤞

Hi, This is just an outbuilding so we aren't to worried about dpc. the clay soil is rock hard here and bone dry. we get very little rain to be fair.

James, do you think you can do a video explaining the steps needed to rebuild a ruin or a house in Portugal. I mean the legal aspects of it, what’s exempt from permits, what needs permits, when do you need a Civil engineer, when do you need an architect? I my self just bought my grandfather house in Portugal which burned down in 2017 with the wild fires, and would love some clarity on how to proceed to rebuild it, and so would all your other subscribers. Hi, I may do a video one day, but for now I‘m a little busy. I know the regulations based on what we do, but be careful! not all ruins can simply be rebuilt. it all depends how much of a ruin it is. Our friend is having one hell of a job trying to get the permissions to rebuild his ruin. having said that, rules do seem to vary quite a lot depending where you are in Portugal.

Problem with the roof & other concrete area above jack hammer holes for Acro Props all the way along, put a Plinth all the way along & concrete it in. Problem Solved!

I’m definitely not an engineer but could you take a meter section of that thin brick wall out and replace with solid concrete blocks. Leave to cure and go to the other end and do the same. As the blocks cure and you work toward the center you find a way to leave a channel at the top of the blocks to mortar in a steel beam that could carry the load for the garage roof.

16:29 cut a metre of the roof out, leave a metre in, cut a metre out, leave a metre in and so on. Refill gap, let set then knock the rest out and fill in. Like underpinning

Not sure you need to anything with that corrugated roof ends in the wall. It's stood without any signs of structural failure for god knows how many years embedded into the wall. I'd just fill in any broken brickwork or holes with mortar and leaves it.
