For future reference.. the "metal" brake vacuum booster fitting on the plenum from a "90s" 3.1 or 3.4 liter fit right in those 3.5 liters. It's a good replacement for those cheapo plastic fittings... everytime I work on a 3.5 liter, I'll order certain parts that's made "90s" 3.1/3.4 liter engines that fit perfectly on those engines, and also other engines..

if your curious why GM quit using metal fittings: cost. the plastic ones cost just a few pennies each, the metal ones cost about a dollar each. over millions of units, that is lots saved, for a part that really does not need to be metal, as its just a vacuum line, so as long as it seals, and doesn't get too hot, plastic it is.

That's exactly what I think when I watch Ray. In my young years, replacing an engine or some other type of heavy work, I'd always end up with a bucket full of bolts that I didn't know where they went. Thankfully, everything seemed to work okay, I just don't know why I always had leftovers....
@fubisroc9673
@fubisroc9673 2 жыл бұрын
Isn't that the truth. I have the ability & the confidence to do a job like this, but it takes me 2-3 times longer because I know I'll forget where each bolt went, so I go through an overly-meticulous process of documentation to know exactly where each bolt goes, and what order (overall) all the parts came off / go back on in. It may be slow & tedious, but it still gives a sense of accomplishment when the job is done, there are NO spare parts, and the car fires up on the first try!

I have been a mechanic since I was a young 10 year old (learning to be) lad working in my dads Mobil oil service station. Over the years I have developed skills that include Auto mechanic. Steam boiler mechanic. Welder (MIG STICK TIG) welding instructor. Machinist. Sheetmetal mechanic. I have built parts one of which went on the Voyager spacecraft and made many other parts for aircraft. So my metal trade skill are on the higher end. I say this not to blow my own horn but to say with all these experiences. I would not hesitate to have you work on my car. Your attention to detail is way above most guys. Thank you so much for your videos. I do my own work and have for all my life. At this time I am recovering from some medical stuff (not serious stuff but keeping my in the house) so your videos are helping this old guy get through it. For that I thank you. I bought my wife a 2004 Mustang GT with the 4.5 (I think it's 4.5) V8. The power steering pump is putting out low pressure so the brakes and steering are hard to use if the engine is at idle. I have the new pump and that is when I ended up in the hospital for four days. I now have a catheter and will till Feb 8 (Not fun). Once that is taken care of I should be good to go. Keep up the great work and the great videos, GOD bless

Great video! I'm guessing all of these engines leak like this. So, GM took a lesson from Ford with their FE and MEL big blocks and split the valve train cover sealing area between the intake and head. Great lessons unlearned! No wonder it looked like the Exxon Valdez on the bottom side! I've never seen a Ford product with one of those engines, a few years, some heat cycles, and not leaking. Of course it's like every Harley owner, Rolls Royce or Pratt and Whitney aircraft engine. If it's not leaking oil, it's probably empty. I was taught on aircraft engine oil leaks, a bad leak is one you have to jump over.

After while they all kind of look the same. Taking the time to do the little things that will make a difference in the future is one of the things you do best, covering the exposed wires is one of them! Putting a engine together on a engine stand is fairly easy, keeping everything clean an all that stuff. BUT ,putting one together in these cramped conditions is a tuff job !!! I guess that’s why I watch your Chanel. I quit working on cars back in the mid 80s. Front wheel drive , fuel injunction , computer crap, was too much for me. So I started driving 18 wheeler coast to coast. I just retired. Almost 4 million accident free miles. Alouth the last 15years I did quit driving the east coast. Enough rambling from a old man. I hope every one has a wonderful Independence Day!!!

Ray is an honest mechanic. Speaking of service people and honesty I had a small appliance repair guy come 3x to fix my front loading washer. The third time he said if it happens again it would need a new pump. After paying for three service calls I googled it and realized he knew the first time that id need a pump. I ordered one online and installed it myself. However fate got the best of him and his notice was recently in the obituaries. I don’t mind paying a good dollar for work but not to be cheated

I didn't do the intake but I just did the valve covers on my son's Impala with the 3.5 in it. When you started on this car I was hoping you would do the valve cover gaskets just so I could see how you do it versus how I did it. I didn't remove the power steering pump from the cooling crossover, you can reach all the bolts I really didn't see a reason to remove it I just left it and the picking eye in place, I just removed the six mounting bolts. I do admit putting the new gaskets in and remounting it was a little more complicated with the power steering pump in the way, but it really wasn't. I have to admit I was thinking of doing the intake gaskets as well, but seeing how the valve covers dried up the leak, and then seeing your video of how in-depth replacing just the intake gaskets is on this motor I'm glad I didn't since they weren't leaking. You should have shown your method for changing the grommets on the bolts for the valve covers because I found that to be a bit of a pain in the butt. Mostly mine were just crusty and hard and difficult to remove.

Ray, I don't know how you do it. Everytime that I work on my cars, I curse the car companies and their engineers. I hate fwd with transverse mounted engine. Give me a V-8 engine with rear wheel drive. You can actually work on them. Body on frame is good too. When working on anything, I take pictures and put hardware in individual Ziploc bags that are labeled appropriately. Saves time, headaches, and lost parts. You have the advantage of working on largely rust free vehicles. That helps. I'd like to see you and Ford Boss trade jobs for a week.

At 12:30 and other torqueing of the rear driver's side manifold bolt, the actual torque will be greater than or less than that indicated by the torque wrench, because the offset either adds to or subtracts from the torque wrench lever arm, depending on the direction of the offset relative to the handle of the torque wrench. When the offset is in line with the handle, the actual torque will be less than what the torque wrench indicates, because the offset is subtracting from the effective length of the torque wrench. When the offset is opposite to the handle, the actual torque will be greater than what the torque wrench indicates. Hope this doesn't cause a problem!

I agree that using a torque wrench on a crowfoot (or similar) complicates it, but I'm not sure you have the effects correct. (I'm not sure you have them wrong, either.) I'd have to draw a diagram and work it out for myself to be sure. Let's just agree that torque measurements with crowfoots are best avoided.

The GM 3.5 is the same engine as the 3.1 , 3.3 engines, GM had overheating problems with those engines for years. I've heard the overheating was because of the aluminum heads on an iron engine block. And the aluminum heads cool faster than the iron block and causes head gasket leaks. Really good job on the work you did Ray.

Your correct Ray. When reinstalling used push rods you want to place them back into the same rocker arms they came from. Like you said, they all wear a bit differently over time.
@davidmiller9485
@davidmiller9485 2 жыл бұрын
that wasn't what he was talking about. He was going to make sure they were put back in order of removal. What he was referring to was that each pushrod be turned until it was directionally the same as removed. the idea is that one side of the "ball" will wear more/less than the other side. When I was building engines I used all new so this was never an issue.
@Boga217

But they won't wear out on one side because push rods rotate when engine running.
@davidmiller9485
@davidmiller9485 2 жыл бұрын
@@Boga217 actually it's the lifters that rotate on the cam. Pushrods are under pressure from the rocker arm if your pushrods are rotating, you might need to lash your valves.
@Boga217
@Boga217 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidmiller9485 when they come up then that release of tension at top is a moment of no tension that allows the lifter to spin them...which is why they don't wear on one side unless there overlashed /over tightened. But the guy making the comment probably wouldn't understand that technical of explaining being he already has a misconception of the workings in an engine. Look at every pushrod that is in an engine working properly. It has a nice even polish...now go get a magnifying glass..it has a rotating swirl look to the wear lines as well.
@davidmiller9485
@davidmiller9485 2 жыл бұрын
@@Boga217 I'm trying to keep it simple. As much as i hate to say it, it's usually better to keep things simple than try to explain them. Example, every public student has a distorted and wrong view of what an atom looks like or take electricity, everyone seems to think that electricity is magical elven things (from pixies to gnomes) that travel down a wire, That is wrong. Its about the fields moving or oscillating and even that is simplified. My point is that, in general it's best to keep it simple since it reduces the chances of misunderstanding a technical subject. So if it helps to think of electricity as pixies, go for it. It won't change your ability or lack thereof to install that new radio you just bought. :)

My brother-in-law replaced the leaky valve cover gasket on his Cruz but kept stripping the threads. After several attempts he asked me to take a look.for him. When I asked if it was inch pounds or foot pounds the look on his face was priceless and he said things that children just should not hear.

Nice job thanks for recording your progress. The trick to Wireloom is to make it work for you. You cut the wireloom to fit into the one section 39:55 when you still had an area on the other side of the sensor tee that had bare wires. A good practice while working with wire branches/tees is to rotate wireloom so the branch matches up with the slotted side and come back with electrical tape for tees and ends and misc. locations in between. Thanks again, for filming the process.

Ray - minor issue here: When using a crows foot (or "offset") ratchet with a torque wrench you should adjust the torque wrench setting to account for the offset of the crows foot. For example, say the finished torque required is 60 in-lb. If your crows foot is 1" from center-to-center, if you apply 60 in-lb (the "click"), the bolt actually is torqued to 65 in-lb, about 8% higher than spec. To determine the proper torque wrench setting when using a crows foot, first measure the distance c-to-c of the crows foot, then divide this measurement by 12. If the crows foot is 1" c-to-c you will get 0.0833. Add 1 to this (1.0833). Now divide your desired torque setting by this number. In your case, 60/1.0833 = 57.2 in-lb. This will give you 60 in-lb of actual torque on the bolt.

I've been washing down and spraying tire foam on my engines since I first started driving in 1994 and have never had an issue with electroics. Even on my new trucks and that's taking them to the car wash and using the spray wand. My older trucks is an 08 Silverado with 300,000 miles and I've never had any electrical issues. When doing a big job like Ray did, I believe in clean cean clean in regards to cleaning down the old oil leakage and grime on the engine. When ever I work on somebodys vehicle that has leaks I fix, I make sure it is spotless. It also allows you to see if it leaks again or if a future leak happens on a different part of the motor.

@JimmyMakingitwork 2 жыл бұрын
The chances of having an issue with washing everything down are low, but there is a possibility of it. Usually only when pressure washers are used, but if any connector is compromised just a little, water intrusion will show itself either right after or in a few months. If I do clean an engine down, it's usually before repair so I can see those connectors during the repair as well as locate leaks.
