We all have days like that and you don't need to apologize for the language. I worked in a shop with 125 other tradesmen, welders, fitters, mechanics ,machinists, painters, electricians, toolmakers etc and the language was just a part of working life. Later in life I got in to trouble for swearing in other workshops, I couldn't help it, it was part of my DNA.

My high school shop teacher told me that if I cut off too much, just put the machine in reverse and sprinkle the chips back on. I never got it to work, it's an advanced technique.

I recently did a precision bore in a gear blank and very precisely bored it exactly 0.5mm over the intended size. I miss read the tri micrometer.

Thanks for keeping it real Max. Being .025 too big is better than being .025 small. I was very carefully machining some bores for bearings Friday and when I put the bearing in the hole it fell through the back side. Needless to say, I did not try to make the other 4. Some days it pays to walk off and work on something else. Expression of frustration is part of life. If I make a mistake it is usually expressed in the language I understand and I am very fluent is profanity. Again thanks for keeping it real and the job is a peice of art.

Hi Max, remember some 30 years ago making dies to make a radiator for a WW1 Junkers triplane, same as the one flown by the Red Baron. 5000 brass tubes manufactured by a munitions factory in S Korea. Had to have a hexagon swaged on each end of the tube, these were set up in jig and soldered by a machinist in New Zealand. Challenging project.

I spent the vast majority of my working life either working for myself or in a company I owned, in the last 15 years before I retired I had a total of 3 1/2 days off and 1 of those days was to have a hernia operation. I used to refer to going to work when you feel like death warmed up as "The joys of being self-employed" There are plenty of upsides, but also a few downsides. Well done all around on that job 👍

Funny, I was working on a part a couple weeks ago that was supposed to be turned down to .750 as well, and I also misread the micrometer by .025. Too bad mine was the other way, so had to do some weld build up (again) and turn down. Really enjoy watching how you do a lot of these more complex parts/setups!

Ha, you should hear the language around here Max when something does not go wrong! Never mind when it does. Yesterday I went in to my set up I had left the night before, set the tool depth as usual and proceeded to bore a hole in a 345 Cat excavator boom precisely .005" larger than I wanted it. You might say the air was blue as I set up the bore welding machine to do it again! It happens and I swear🤬like a drill instructor! I like your description of the cutting tool grind Max. I never thought of squaring the tool. I grind them like that to get as close to a shoulder as possible. Bloody good show none the less. The part came out pretty looking from where I sit and looks like the lads can keep up the artillery barrage! 🍻🍻

Max, we all have bad days now and then especially when the flu gets us. I busted the compound on my AL 346V on Saturday of the June long weekend. I didn't swear, I was too FKen despondent for that. Long story. Anyway, on to Hare and Forbes and I am getting 2 new ones flown in. One to use and the other insurance against another breakage. You know the deal, have a spare in the cupboard and you will never need it. My favourite one of your saying is the "Cock in a sleeve". I have a bit of a cackle whenever I hear you use that one. @@swanvalleymachineshop It was just a simple job. parting off a couple of small bushes for the FEL pins on an old David Brown tractor. The parting tool is fitted into an old style parting tool holder and therefore was sticking out too far on the tool holder. It wasn't working well so I gave it a little more cutting edge and the bastard dived in to the job and snapped the compound in two right down its length. Chinese lathe, bad cast iron and not enough of it and an idiot working it. What more can I say. It was just a simple job. I never seem to have much luck parting off. In the last 40 years of owning a lathe I have never even come close to doing that before. Shit happens I guess. On the bright side, it looks like it might be the weak link in the chain as nothing else got damaged so I will keep the same setup. Should have bought a Taiwanese Lathe.

CAD requires alot of finger hand movement. Expensive courses in WA. Basic methods of constructing a box or circle can be great starting points. Although I didn't start 1. Did a associate diploma instead. But to long. Written method still would stop the slang from slipping out. But it seems so so simple to remember what to do. I like taking small steps. But production requires time factors. Utube is a great correction tool.

I use a 20mm x 100 mm flat bar on the top of the ways. I have it long enough so I can move it around easily. This gives me more versatility using an indicator or scriber. Also I can use it as a flat surface for marking out a part.

Was a sand box moulder pattern maker in my young days nearly 50 years past now, the days before the politically correct police and so call woke ? Society/ Crowd, whatever that is, where I worked and the place I was raised colourful language was the norm, didn’t make us bad people either.
