Watching your work is like taking a master class in machining. I own 7 lathes, 3 mills and 2 grinders. The only machining training I have is from YT. I appreciate your willingness to share a lifetime of experience with us wannabe folks!

He seems a great one to learn from. His proper use of tools and no drama demonstration of real world use is full of detail worth emulating. (Except for the bit where he clears swarf with his fingers...while the chuck is turning.)

Runout (TIR) is excellent for guessing Class C3/electric motor bearings, interference on ID and OD reduces runout, great job, and great addition to the shop Max. Edit. Just looked at your 8 part taper roller tailstock chuck build, YT says I've watched it, cant remember 3 years ago, 40 years maybe. Taken a screenshot of your hand drawing. The world of rolling element bearings is a complicated one. Photography is excellent, honing those video and audio skills 👌. Thanks for sharing.

Continental aeroengines found that out the hard way. Quite a few crankshaft balance weights where retained with the circlips in the wrong way. A few engine failures and an airworthiness directive, resulted. Carl, also from Northern Canada.

I agree. I have an old used but good trailer axle stub and hub assembly I was going to re-purpose into a rotating tailstock chuck for a decent old 8 inch 3 jaw i have but now I might just do this setup instead. May be easier and a cleaner look in the end as the dust cap on the hub would end up being visible in the chuck center hole. It wouldn't necessarily be in the way and only take up about half the bore depth inside the 8 inch chuck which wouldn't matter for a tailstock chuck but I do like the clean look of the sealed bearings and it seems that they will preform just as well as preloaded taper bearings.
@swanvalleymachineshop2 ай бұрын
I wanted to try that way as i have seen others struggle with ordinary bearings . It works well & easier . 👍

39:40 the gears on your bedmill are so quite. I had to wear earplugs running mine, even after replacing all the bearings. I finally replaced the gear head with a Bridgeport step-pulley J head, which is almost silent in comparison.

I turned the volume down , as i do with all machines in editing ! I am thinking about putting the Bridgeport slotting head on it instead . 👍

Nice one mate. Is a 4 jaw any benefit? I do find myself in the tools making tools rabit hole quite often. Does that slow down in your experience?😂

@bobvines002 ай бұрын
Max, this may be a dumb question, but why did you press the bearing OD into the chuck adapter *and* the MT4 shaft into the bearing ID? I've always thought that either the OD or the ID of bearings should be a "slip fit" with the other diameter being a press fit. Have I been doing this wrong for ~40 years? Or did you press both diameters simply to lessen the possible radial play?
@swanvalleymachineshop2 ай бұрын
To lessen the radial play . 👍
