Love that too! Hearing that aggressive behavior and competition is a boys thing in general from a boys mum of 5 is a relief. I teach my 5 year old also to be gentle, respectful and careful with human beings and tools. Bush rafting is a new word to me, although we've done that. Directing kids to use their energy to create something valuable instead of destruction is beautiful.

I study Psychology and Child Development and that is such a healthy way of raising children! There’s a wonderful book by Judith Butler called Gender Trouble where she writes about the how detrimental it is to suppress parts of ourselves in childhood, and specifically how our cultures have taught us to do it subconsciously. Having a model of adults that intentionally embrace differences in personalities of their children and guides them to healthy outlets for emotional regulation is absolutely wonderful! I used to get in trouble all the time for being so wild, it wasn’t until I started learning about and working with children that I realized how much can change when parents and caretakers focus less on control and more on support for their babies ❤

Nikki, my FIRST Job was working with SEVERAL EMOTIONAL IMPAIRED IN 1978.. I was not educated to this. My neighbor was the sectary at this school and asked me to come and be an aide. I saw, and learned quickly about how many parents didn't direct their children how to release their own emotions. Which caused so many problems. They were so loving and kind and then EXPLODE and start chasing me with a 2 by 4. Choke me, hit me, spit and yell and scream. I would pray for them. Some came back to me and apologize and make me a gift. Draw or take a photo. They are VERY TALENTED with art. Each of our brains work so differently. 2 teacher and 4 students. At times we needed more staff. Most of the students lived in the cottage's back of the school. Parent's, would come to visit (some). A few students went home. GOD BLESS YOU. I had 3 daughters. Then, I started College. I even worked at my old high school in Special education.

Also wanted to add to my comment that my big 6 ft 4 inch son will cry openly and unashamedly if he is moved to do so. He's been called a crybaby, yet is one of the most directed and brave people I've had the pleasure to know. He just has a heart as fragile as his aggressive nature is strong.

I agree... raising strong and gentle young men. Just like your sweetheart hubby. My little boy has been gardening with me for 10 years now. He's my garden buddy💙 He's 18 this year 😢he will probably be to busy with college life and work, but I will cherish those memories of us gardening. I feel grateful that I was able to introduce a way to reduce stress and enjoy the results of his work.

Love your statement "Strong but Gentle"!Raising My son Sterling was my biggest Blessing, even on my own as a widow, he had & still has so many opportunities to learn Strength & Tenderness through & through with an irresistible sense of humor and charisma.. He Loves the Lord and wears it on his back & heart! I remember having to let him do things that I would never have ever thought of as girl, woman & Mom.. So glad I was able to let him be 1000% boy /man with all the Big Boy Tools at a young age! This makes me think of so many precious memories together.. Our relationship is a bit different now with him just getting married a couple weeks ago at 20yrs old. They Eloped to Glacier National Park alone for Private event with gorgeous photos.. Sure Missed getting to Celebrate them! Thanks for your Blessings, 🌻Jess! Love you, ❤Deb

I have to agree with your closing comments about gardening disappointments. My garden became a half eaten hot mess and yet so lovely and beautiful. A young doe chose my garden to have her twin babies. She ate down my peppers, sweet potatoes and strawberry plants not once, but twice! Everything grew back and I will get some harvest, but it was a joy having such beautiful creatures share my garden. Some things I planted, not expecting them to make it, produced beyond what I could have hoped for. I had drought and scorching sun, but it was a great gardening experience. I am thankful!

Jess, if you like having interesting things on your charcuterie board, smoked, oil packed jalapenos are amazing. You can use a milder pepper. Smoke them, salt, a splash of vinegar and a nice oil. Let them sit for a couple of weeks, then enjoy on your boards. Of course, follow any safety measures. Makes great holiday gifts.

Our garden took a back seat this year due to medical issues... but I threw the remains of a few store-bought squashes into our compost pile. Now, we have an unknown variety of squash literally taking over our backyard. It's the healthiest plant in our garden too. It's just getting to the stage of growing female flowers, but it is determined to grow. Everything else we planted this year either went straight to seed, died, or has yet to ripen its fruit. Sometimes your plans stay plans and never come to fruition. The garden is a wild ride, but man is it beautiful and rewarding to watch it grow.

I love the teaching children (especially boys) to do dangerous things safely. I was watching 3 of my grandsons yesterday and the twins (age 3) decided to wrestle - literally wrestle. Like I did wrestling stats when I was in high school ages ago and they did very well - I was very impressed. I didn't stop the wrestling - they're boys. But then they all decided to go upstairs and I sat and watched them hop from sofa to sofa to ottoman to other ottoman, fall, bump their heads for over 30 minutes. Boy oh boy did they have a great time getting energy out and learning to jump farther and farther.

Boy mom here. Gorgeous sentiment! When they were little, they always wanted to throw stuff. Inside, the rule was they could only throw balls of socks. 😂 They wanted to hit trees, etc with sticks, we trained them to only hit invasive trees and large rocks. 😅 Giving them tools of destruction to clear our overgrown yard was always a big hit!

my husband was raised younger in Bishop California, it was all ranching and fishing . Little boys would walk the streets with loaded 22 and no one thought a thing about it. Those were the days that made sense, the boys loved hunting and fishing all day long. The rodeo was the high point of the year. It was very rural and I think relating to gun with respect and knowledge is so important. Its the country folks.

Game changer! Take those Marconi reds and use them as a stuffing pepper. My favorite is making chicken enchilada stuffed peppers and pop them in the oven at 400 for 20-25 minutes with some foil tented over the pan then remove the foil ad bake for another 5 min til your cheese is nice and melted ❤

I don't ever remember returning with a switch, but she got us to quit fighting!

I totally get where you're coming from. I had one son, well one child, and he was very aggressive as a little boy, both physically and emotionally. I was raised in a family of boys, so I understood that aggression and dedication are flip sides of the same coin, and they both have a highly useful purpose, if directed well. My son is about 17 years older than your oldest, so he is now 35, and has now become a very effective, stern, but yet so gentle special ed teacher, highly beloved by his students. He still has that aggression, but uses it now to fight for his students' rights, and become always a better teacher.

Hi Jess, exactly and boys are boys. We let our kids have machetes and knives since they were little too! It's a good thing for kids to explore with stuff like that if they are taught correctly and bush crafting is what boys need in life. ALL BOYS NO MATTER THE AGE. I remember the first time our daughter cut her own tree down with the machete she wanted to keep that forever now could care less but it was cute at the time.

A couple of years ago, we bought what we thought was banana peppers and they were gorgeous. Picked them and started to get them ready to pickle and can b/c we love them in salads. Well, all of a sudden my hands started burning like crazy, eyes watering and snot running. Good grief, those things were hotter than fire. Called my son who is a pepper freak and sent him a picture. He said "Mom, you got Hungarian Wax peppers". They were so hot we couldn't eat them. I don't know what happened, but boy that is when I was "assaulted by a pepper in my kitchen". LOL. We have some friends that love those hot things and we gifted them to them. All was well.

As an only child who was son and daughter to my father, I think your advice is good for raising both sexes! Learning to channel your negative emotions into something productive is the best skill one can learn. As for gardening, I had a pepper issue this year for the first time. My sweet banana peppers were hot! I bought the plants a local nursery that I have patronized for many years without issue. So now I have 8 plants of hot bananas and that’s way to many!!! Any advice on what to do with that many?

Completely agree with your parenting methods. And yes, refrigerator space is at a premium.......basil tea takes up some space!!😊 I love it and my friends do too! I'm growing Scotch Bonnet peppers for the first time this year as I am determined to do authentic Carribean Jerk Chicken. Yes, they're hot, but I'm gonna try it! Thank you Jess!

I had a Swiss Army knife when I was in Girl Scouts. They taught me how to use it in day camp. (I also take my aggression out on my yard work and exhaust my energy)

My son got out his teen aggression with a pick axe chopping through ice. Totally agree with you Jess. He is now a lovely young man.

My very first zinnias that I got from a dear friend finally just bloomed. I was worried they wouldn't and they are gorgeous! I'm so so happy to have some flowers in my garden

I like to call myself a freestyle gardener, I love that laid back style of gardening too :) I went to a seed swap this spring and found some cantaloupe seeds (someone had saved them from their garden). As they started to grow they turned out to be some sort of summer squash but very inedible. I assumed it was cross pollinated so I pulled it out. Will try again next year with another variety. It's hard to grow melons in our short season but I am determined to find one that thrives :) Peppers struggle here too but I have been able to grow a few varieties with success. I started all my peppers from seed, mostly from previous years or smaller seed companies so thankfully no peppergate here!

I have 2 sons, who are now 40 and 37. I love, love, love being a boy mom! They are strong but gentle and I absolutely love watching them with their children now! One has a son and a daughter and the other has a daughter. They are wonderful dads; I am amazed to watch how they play with their son and little girls. It is so important to let them be kids and lead by example. You and Miah remind me so much of the life we instilled in our boys. I love your channel Jess, but I thank you so much for sharing your family with us as well.
