Horizontal fence board makes a lot more sense even for wood, because one can use the highest grade pressure treated lumber or higher grade toughened powder coated aluminum for the bottom slats but use lighter duty material and surface finish for the remaining slats for cost control. Even if the bottom ones are of the same low tier material and go bust, materials above the bottom slats don't need to be replaced (unlike vertical systems)
@eh_bailey2 жыл бұрын
I did a horizontal cedar fence with PT on the ground before the slats start.

I never thought of that. Also occurs to me I could mix and match the styles. So first foot or so from ground up can be horizontal (PT but still replaceable), then go with vertical above. The bottoms of those verticals should not rot because they'll be that far above ground.

I'm glad you talk about surveys! I do land surveying and I see WAY to many times we come by after someone puts up a fence, doing work for their neighbor because they put the fence over onto the neighbors. Easily 80% of the time there are pi s missing, or the lines don't line up to your rear neighbors and stuff gets done wrong. We always reccomend setting the fence in at least 2" to be 100% sure there is no doubt it's on your side.

2 inches from the centre of the property line? So technically after your property line is staked out can you put the fence directly on the property line? so if the fence is 4 inches wide, it would be 2 inches on either side of center?
@enekuda05 Жыл бұрын
@gotpilks no, if you are putting up a fence, you want the outward face of the fence to be 2-4" inside the line. Technically it can be right on the line, but that means the posts are inside by 2-4". We want the posts in closer to 6-8" depending on the fence.

It sort of reminds me of Top Gear. That show started out focusing on average cars and became a show about Ferraris and other super cars. But then, who would want to watch Jeremy Clarkson drive a Corolla... Anyway, Matt should just go all in and do a recap on his own house build. If he's honest, he'd say, "If you built this house using all of the materials and products I did. Awesome fence. I owned a fence company for 10 years. Our fence code is so stringent, however, that even if we installed those open channels to the neighbor side and capped them, we could be made to take it apart and put those on the owner's side. Code says that all hardware or "ugly" side must be to the owner's side and the non-hardware, or perfect, or beautiful side MUST be to the neighbor. On this style fence, not really a big deal at all. On other styles, lost lots of potential sales because customers couldn't understand why they had to have the hardware side. Eventually, out vinyl fence company came out with an entire line of fence called . . . "Neighbor Friendly." Same on both sides. No issues.

A couple years ago I replaced my backyard fence with Simtek Ecostone composite fencing, which was a 200 foot parameter. What I love about this fence is just how durable it is and how it always stays clean. My backyard neighbor's dogs kept ripping apart the old wood fence, and I didn't want to deal with it anymore. This fence can take a hit with a sledge hammer and not leave a mark. It also doesn't seem to ever get dirty. It looks exactly the same as the day I put it up and I haven't washed it once. You can also easily spray off graffiti with a pressure washer. It cost me right around $10,000 for materials alone, since I put it up myself, but it's worth every penny for the peace of mind and 0 maintenance. The Simtek Ecostone fencing is difficult to source now day and would cost roughly $20,000 for the same project today, so I'm glad I pulled the trigger when I did.

The lawyers advise to NOT put a fence on your property line. Hey Matt I've been loving your show for years now and the whole low energy passive house side of things. So I just thought I should call out the next step on the journey is low embodied carbon in construction and as much as I initially like this material its supper high in embodied carbon compared to the wooden fence so my friend the challenge is a measurement of life cycle carbon on your materials. It may last forever but the site may get smaller or the next owner may prefer wood so lets say its got 50 years before it's decommissioned and recycled or worse scrapped. That's my challenge to you Matt you've nailed a passive house retrofit, awesome, lets see how you can help us to get to net-zero by 2050 with bringing that embedded carbon in materials down through measurement.

Matt, you're presuming it never gets scratched, bent or dented. You can't powder coat a scratch so you either paint over it (which would stand out no matter how well it's done) or replace the slat, which also might stand out if the other slats are 10 years old. And replacing a bottom slat means unscrewing and removing ALL of the slats above it. From your neighbor's property, the way you installed it. The 'perfect' look of it means imperfections will stand out more. For 8-10x the cost of wood I'd rather go with masonry. For a much lower cost option that's low maintenance, vinyl.

Aluminum is actually better left uncoated over its life unless it will be maintained, no matter the coating it will oxidize eventually. Your biggest concern should be galvanic corrosion, particularly on the fasteners that are used. Dissimilar metals+salt air over time=rust never sleeps. 3-5 years life on a coating is terrible. There is Kynar, coraflon and many more options for 20+ years. Even aliphatic acrylic polyurethane will do better than 3-5 in the outdoors. It comes down really to what kind of abuse is the coating facing over time. Example, if the sprinkler is spraying it every other morning expect that section to look extra shitty in a couple years.

In our last house we had cedar fence all the way around the back yard and it was a pain to maintain. I replaced 15 panels one year only to have a wind storm come through and blow down 10 of them including snapping off the posts..... arrrgg. When we moved to the current location, no one has a fence around the whole block, so the center of the "rectangle" is a giant open park area. Lots of giant oak trees and grass. Kids never went to the park a block away they all just congregated in the back yards.

Certainly a good solution to the vinyl fences that attract algae, mold, and dirt. Thanks for sharing this product. I'd like to see a driveway fence addition to a front yard fence, either with a hinge option or sliding feature that rolls behind the front yard fence.

Don’t forget Utility right of ways. In most areas you have to provide access for utility companies to access their plant. In some cases a utility company can remove a fence to get access and are not responsible for damages.( most still provide reimbursement) I work for a utility company and it forever boggles my mind why people fence in utilities and provide no access.

I think it looks great the only issue I see that can occur is the scribing to the tree I normally give customers a flex zone 1-2 inches for the tree to flex in the wind/storms because it will buckle those wood sections I see those needing replaced pretty regularly or I box the tree out giving a decorative bump out I work for a very large fencing company that cover the Carolina's and it's just some food for thought.

The most common homeowner tenure is six to ten years. Of course many live in their homes for a much longer period but six to ten years is about the most common length of time. If one replaced a fence with the product being demonstrated the longevity of the fence would far exceed the expected tenure by the homeowner who installed it. The question then becomes, in the absence of a hazard like termites, would one recapture the value at sale? That is, would a buyer pay a premium for the fence? I would argue that would not be the case and that either a wood fence or at best a vinyl fence would be a better choice for the average home. Just my opinion, ymmv.

A couple of things from Florida. 1. I use powder coat exclusively for my automated gates. No way you are getting 15 years without fading. At least not in Florida. 2. The gate post that you filled with cement. The cement is a bad idea. First it will not strengthen the post. Of the post leans it will simply crack the cement. Second you would have been better off to use a thicker wall instead of cement filled. Filling with cement will greatly hinder any welding that you want to do to the gate post for hinges. These things I've learned the hard way. Thank you for sharing.

What you mean by thicker wall? I think all the pieces are standard sizes
@ocdtechtalk2 жыл бұрын
@@aayotechnology I'm sure the kit has standard sizes. A local aluminum supplier will have a 4x4x0.5 that could be painted to match (as long as the color is solid). I'm not sure the wood grain choices are powder coated. Most likely a wrap.

Kids playing basketball, and their missed shots, tend to send the basketball into fences. I wonder if this stuff will get dented from such activity. Plus: how will it hold up at the bottom of the kids’ favorite sledding hill? It looks like this wouldn’t do too well for fencing in the sides of the yard that has a good slope to it, like that sledding hill.

Is it possible to use this fencing without screwing the slats to the posts and leaving them free floating? Would that really even fix the expansion problem?

I’m building a house in Tampa, FL. Reached out to the Knotwood company in Atlanta, GA multiple times over the phone and via the website. I could not get an estimate for the material associated with my residential fence. I suspect it would have been way out of my maximum budget. I do have a small section of 6ft CMU wall in the front and it was extremely expensive. I ended up settling for a horizontal vinyl fence from a local fence company. I was hoping for a black color but the premium for black was 4x the cost of white.

Speaking for myself as a member of the FireWise committee in a different neighborhood in Austin, I appreciate that the fence you took out looks just like the ones in Steiner Ranch that led to wicking the fire from one house to the next, and you’ve replaced that with something much more fire resistant. However, I’m also in the market to replace our wooden fence, and while I want to use something fire resistant, I don’t think I have your budget. Do you have any suggestions for less expensive options? Maybe something based on Hardie board?
