I have the same pad, I have used it multiple times in really cold stuff and I've found it works best when I blow it up quite hard and use a foil mat as you have. There's myself and another 3 of us from lakedistrict_outdoors that have used them in minus double figures in the mountains. It's my go to pad for the cold stuff. Strange how it hasn't worked for you 🤔.

I have this mat. But I will always use a closed foam mat underneath it. The inflation valve is just a gimmick. Putting the cap back on can release air. To finish on a good note, the deep V’s are great on my bad back.

I have gone through many a mat over the years and as I got older and wiser decided to try the more expensive brands out. The best 2 brands I’ve personally used are therm a rest and Exped. Don’t get me wrong I’ve had expensive mats fail but customer service sorted me out. I’ve had 2 very good (but fairly expensive) Exped mats for about the last 6 or 7 years and until I feel they have failed me I’ll stick with the brand.

I watched another review by Lonewolf902 of the Klymit pads and they said they were much colder than other pads at lower stated R values. When they contacted Klymit they said the down in your sleeping bag is designed to fill the channels to give the insulation. Problem is that in reality it doesn't work like that and they are garbage for cold weather use and their R value does not match the R value of other pads.

As I’m on a budget and can’t afford things like the thermorest or nemo I decided it’s worth putting up with the extra bulk and weight of a Vango trek pro self inflating with a generic z mat.. I didn’t have any faith in the klymit as there’s too much space between the inflated areas which is sure to mean heat is lost in those areas

Another youtuber in Canada I used to watch back in 2020 complained about a mat that was designed like that but not that brand (oops, just checked it is that brand, sorry.). He said he would stay cold. He thought it was the deep dips all throughout the mat allowing cold air underneath. He tried it several times before he reviewed it and each time he stayed cold all night.

The reflective mat would go on top of the air mat directly under you in order to work as designed. Emergency mylar and the like is exponentially ineffective the further it is from the heat spruce, which is you. That is designed to reflect your heat back at you not as a barrier to keep cold away. So the proper layering is air mattress, mylar then you and your sleeping bag. If it's super cold you can even put that in the sleeping bag . That's how it's supposed to work. Reflect your heat. The only reason I say super cold is those things actually make it hot when right up against the body inside the sleeping bag and you risk sweating

I reckon that your body heat is travelling along the V grooves to the outside edge of the mat. If the V's had blocks on them to create air pockets it might solve the problem. Imagine that each groove of the V looks like this ---------------- you will see that air can flow freely from one end to the other. If there were baffles/blocks/wall along each groove so that it looks like --|--|--|--|-- the warm air from your body would stay in each |--| section and not escape to the edges.

It's interesting your comments on this mat. I've got the klimate static v Lux (The extra wide one) as well as the hammock v. Lux. Have to say I've never had a problem like you're describing. I use two different sleeping bags. One a RAB down bag and the other one a down Chinese knockoff thing. I've also got mattresses that are £20 £30 off Amazon as well as as thermarests most expensive and also expeds down mat. The only ones that I don't rate are the cheap ones. The warmest one is either the static V-Lux or the exped. If it came down to money having paid around £90 for the static v Lux wide I nearly double for the exped. I know which one that I'll be buying again If I was on a budget. It's a shame that you don't like it. I really really rate them especially for the money they cost. Perhaps you got one that wasn't filled as well as the one that I've got. My one is the slightly older version. It's the same style. Just the valves are twists jobs.

Using a down sleeping bag has its disadvantages too if it gets compressed it's useless. Unless you have another insulation between you and the matt ,but manufacturers should say how they got to the r rating conclusions, just looking at it you can see that it was not designed correctly, and your right it should not be given an r rating of 5 ,maybe OK in summer or autumn but not winter .there are a lot better competitors out there that are cheaper and more honest ..Great review..thanks again mate God bless. I've got a exped synmat winterlite, minus 17. An comfort minus 10 bag and I'm still cold about minus 3. Lying on down squashes it, therefore it won't insulate. The silver foil is a start but if you also had something synthetic between your bag and the mat that would help keep you away from the cold ground. Your bag isn't rated for minus 5 either.

Good video Dan I’ve got a klymit insulated v and it is warm enough when used with any sort of foam mat at freezing temperatures. That’s fine you’d think but then it’s no better than my thermarest uberlight on top of the same mat. There is no way the R rating of the klymit is 5. The uberlight is much lighter, warmer, more comfy BUT twice the price at least. I like the klymit static vs but they are flawed in terms of design as you say. They have their place as a good budget option but their prices are going up making them hard to recommend for UK winter, spring use. The big downside with the thermarests is the crinkly noise they make, the warmer version you get, the worse it is. Definitely try before you buy if you can. Another point worth considering about blowing the cash on a good mat is you can get away with lighter sleeping bag, saving weight there too

I have the hammock v version of this. I use it in my bivvi bag with a thin foam mat under the bivvi. I used to use it under a gathered end hammock with a jungle blanket as an underquilt down to -5 and was toasty. Inside the bivvi i tend to place the jungle blanket under this also and it works amazing. Combined with a jungle blanket and 3mm eva mat and carenthea defence 4 i sleep in just thermals and am super toasty. Perhaps one of the issues here is you are wearing too much insulation inside your bag? Remember, you geberate the heat inside your bag which means that if you are insulated inside your bag the heat doesnt fill the bag. That being said, if you then have a cold bag the mat will not work. Just my 2p

The thing is with Klymit is unlike Sea to Summit / Thermarest and so on they don't actually test there pads, so I read and have seen. So whatever 'R rating' they claim the insulated static V is may not actually be. I do have one myself though and have had it in around -6°c with a Rab Ascent 900 sleeping bag in the Lakes and been fine. Not as warm as my Neoair Xtherm but wasn't cold. Do you use your breath you inflate it lile at the start? This time of year the damp from your breath can affect the R rating of pads and better to use a tiny pump or inflation sack. It definitely wouldn't be my go to pad for the conditions this time of year though. My Thermarest Neoair Xtherm would be top by far... then my Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Extreme then maybe the Klymit insulated static V. Like I said ive had it in -6°c and been fine in the tent. Hope you sort it pal 👍🏻👍🏻 ATB... Chris

I've had a similar exprerience with Klymit pads. I bought the Insulated Hammock V which has an advertised R-value of 4.3. The idea was to pair this mat with a Bushmen Glow (-12C rated) quilt so I could thermal stack and hammock camp in winter here in Finland. Turns out it's actually more like 1.9 according to the newer ASTM ratings. It's a con, because Klymit are STILL calling it a 4-season mat on their website and it certainly isn't, and still have the bloody cheek to charge up to 200 euros for it. It's a pity because it's comfortable in the hammock (DD Frontline) but is only suitable for summer. Buyer beware!

Maybe get two and make a foil sleeve to slide the mat inside it like a silver tube? (Tape edges together)... Actually, could maybe try putting a foam mat and your unigear pad inside it to see if that winterize your unigear? Good experiment idea.

Got one of these mats. Paid £60 at the time. Sent the first one back as the valve had a slow leak. Replacement was fine though. Mine is R-value 4.2 and it wasn't quite up to camping below around 2°C in my experience. I bought the quilted cover which is designed for it and that did the trick. It's like a Thermolite insulated layer. I think the issue with the mat is its simply not as good as it claims to be on R-value. It's not far off but not quite there for 4 season camping. There are a small number of options when it comes to winter mats but I've now got the Thermarest Neoair XTherm and despite being pricey, you get what you pay for. I still like the static V but it's no longer my go to mat. I either use the Xlite or the XTherm.

Klymit are v misleading. The ASTM R Value (i.e. what matters) of this pad is 2.4 (hidden at bottom of text on website), so it is really a 2 season max pad.

The insulated Klymit mats have a really poor R value. Since the new ASTM standard was introduced the R value went from nearly 5 to under 2. They are a complete waste of time because heat just goes straight through the areas between the V where its just a single layer of material. You are better off buying them uninsulated versions as they are light for use in the summer and durable but even then I find the V air chambers really uncomfortable.

I wouldn't waste money getting budget camping gear for cold weather. I have tried in the past but it's a false economy. You do get what you pay for, sad to say. As someone else has mentioned, for me it's either an Exped, or my personal choice is the Therm-A-Rest NeoAir XTherm... Sure, it's expensive but buy once and get it right. R-rating of 6.9 and it does the job!

when it comes to mats for winter (the colder days) there is only one way to go (there is a reason every one is using it) it might be expensive but it works thermarest neoair xtherm and they just updated it for this year so it is even more comfy and its r rating has gone up í have the Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated WL and the Nemo Tensor the insulated one i had the sea to summit black one dont remember its name but the warmest one they make still ended up using the xtherm again

Are those winter mats also usable in the summer? Or will it be too hot? I won't camp in the winter. Minimum will be ~5 degrees. I just want a very s comfortable mat.

It looks like those grooves are something that 'looked good in theory but doesn't work as well in practice. That reflective mat. Speaking under correction, it is supposed to work by reflecting 'radiant' heat (not conduction or convection) .. heat off your body back to you. This tells me that the closer it is to your body, the more effective it will be in keeping that body heat close to you. Being under the inflatable mat on the cold ground to me, seems to be counter-productive. Any heat coming off your body has to make its way through the inflatable mat and then what remains, must now be reflected back up through the mat onto your body. A task I presume, way beyond the physics thereof. Just saying ..

I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews on these style of mats saying the R Value is hugely over exaggerated and I bet if you got inside it you’d find the amount and quality of insulation in there is more than likely worthless. Like you say probably a nice summer mat but not much else.

The R-values of all the Klymit sleeping pads have be drastically downgraded when measured using the new ASTM standards. I had a couple of them rated at R4.4 and R6.5 but now with the ASTM standard the R4.4 one is downgraded to R1.9. So almost no insulating ability. I've sold mine and gone with MEC Vectaire Insulated LT, Nemo Tensor V2 and the Thermarest NeoAir Xtherm. Much much better. I used the Memo on a mountaineering camp in the Canadian Rockies and was warm on the pad. Klymit has been very slow about documenting the R-values using the new standard. No wonder.

Hi Dan great channel. I don't often comment but here is my experience after 40 years of camping. In winter it's all about the sleeping mat. Sadly you get what you pay for I have had probably a dozen mats. In my opinion you need to be looking at mats like the xtherm there are others by Nemo sea2summit etc..these are all a small fortune but they work well. I have had my thermarest down to minus ten in a Bivi bag with a criterion 450. The issue is safety it's ok to camp local and if it goes wrong pack up and go home. On top of a mountain it's not always possible. I have in the past doubled up on pads and thermal fold up foam mat clipped together in a Bivi bag then slept on top of the bag. Issue is again ok to carry this lot in the car but it all starts weighing a ton in a backpack. I always use a layering approach to sleep systems. I found down blankets like the one from Alpkit are great to increase temp range of your kit. One final thing don't be fooled by ratings on sleeping bags and mats. Many use extreme rating to sell more check out Alpkit great price reliable honest kit. Take care Chris

I believe you may have a different result with a polyester filled sleeping bag .as the fibres don't compress as badly underneath you as feathers tend to . That pad does look poorly designed .I use a sea to summit insulated ether light mat and that works well down to about 0 degrees A lot also depends on how much air you have in the pad .if you like it soft then your bum will be closer to the ground . Good vid Dan.

It wont be anywhere near measurable. You could pour a whole cup of water inside a insulated pad and I bet you'd never feel a difference. If you get a real winter pad, you can blow into it all you want. I know, I've had one for years and been doing just that.
