Classic PTX. Wall of sound. Intricate harmonies-all 5 this time!! Surprises too. The Matt and Mitch duets were something we’ve never heard so clearly before. I can totally see them singing this live.

A true 5 point harmony cover! No beatboxing in this one and it sounds incredible! Very haunting 😮 and you get that unique Pentatonix wall of sound that is so beautiful and powerful! My favorite wall of sound is the one in Imagine where they literally sound like one voice which was the message of the cover!

Lol...We Pentaholics can sometimes get a bit overzealous defending them. So many reactors swear they use autotune, backing tracks, etc... Absolutely just like every other artist they use reverb both for studio recordings as well as during live shows. It adds dramatic effect and isn't "cheating" Great reaction as always my friend. Keep doing what ya do! 👍

They obviously do use reverb and a bit of some other effects occasionally to enhance the song in official recordings. I think some fans just try to pretend that they don't because they think post-production somehow lessens the value of their talent? Which is ridiculous. Their post-production is actually one of the reasons why they're so great, because it's always tasteful and serves to enhance their vocals instead or masking them, so then when you hear them live you don't really hear much difference from the studio recording.

For all of us with Anxiety, we can Identify with this song. The 'shadow selves' walking behind them starts out going forward and they reverse and start going backwards. This is superbly shot and their emotion in their faces and voices just show how we feel when we are in an anxiety attack. 10 seconds in when Matt hits us with his first low note I got chills, and when Mitch said 'See right through me', I choke on a sob. I have seen this video over 25 times now and it still affects me. EVERYOEN READING THIS We are worth it, We are glorious, WE BELONG! Love your new introl!

Yes, as someone else said PTX openly admits they sometimes use reverb on a song or a part of a song or to accentuate a sound effect more (like as I mentioned before the electric guitar sound Mitch makes in Bohemian Rhapsody, which in the official video they "show" you that reverb is added to his voice there by having him look like he's using a megaphone). Even though here Kevin is available to harmonize too since his beatboxing isn't needed, they still only have 5 voices doing everything. Reverb isn't cheating, it's a simple effect that can be done with the mics when singing live, so I don't know why some fans insist they don't use it. It doesn't take away from the fact that it's their voices creating the sounds & how well they sing. Now of course they can't use reverb if they are doing a live song "off mic", so then it WILL sound different from the studio recorded version. However, they still come very close because they just practice so much & are great at arranging the parts just right.

The reverb gives the effect of being in a church (or a restroom). There has probably also been a little real vocal doubling also. I have heard them live many times going all the way back to when Mitch, Scott, and Kirstin were in high school. They sound great live also.

Of course there is production on their studio recordings. They are still the GOATs.
@joebarnhart44604 жыл бұрын
OF COURSE they use reverb. For their studio recordings, they also use mild pitch and timing correction. They are a top-earning pop music group and pop music demands it. This is an artistic decision, it doesn't mean they can't sing without it. Their live performance prove that. I've shared this article before -- it's an interview with Ed Boyer who was mix engineer for a number of their recordings. www.soundonsound.com/techniques/inside-track-pentatonix

The question is did they use it in this video? Because I believe they filmed it during quarantine which I believe each person was filmed separately then edited together?
@larrygranbois41644 жыл бұрын
Ouch! All that technical stuff gave me a giant headache trying to process it. I guess if a person is only listening to a song just to pick it apart this is all good information. I listen to music for enjoyment and not to try and find out if they use auto-tune or reverb. I've been to PTX concerts and to my ear they are just as good on stage as in a recording studio and that is all I care about. I did learn a couple of things though Joe so thank you for posting the url.
@CK-bd8tj4 жыл бұрын
@@kristagerry8505 Yes, they certainly used it in this video, but there's nothing wrong with that. Filming and editing/post production does not change whether it was done during quarantine or not. They can add reverb regardless.

They use some in their studio recordings, they just avoid using things that will make it impossible to actually do it live. And some songs have more effects than others. Doesn't mean they're not great or that they're cheating.
@EhrineAshbark4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Even on a live performance, they'll use some reverb if needed depending on the characteristics of the space they're performing in. There's a reason audio engineers on tour need a sound check as they can't just take the same audio presets to each venue, but instead need to tailor it a bit (well, good sound engineers anyway!)

People act like reverb and auto tune are bad. They don’t need it, but it’s essential to pop production. Even the guy that does their mixing and producing said that.
@PMJonte4 жыл бұрын
Yeah...I don't know who said that, but they obviously have no studio experience. Bluntly put, they don't know what they're talking about and shouldn't pretend. EVERYONE uses reverb. The idea is so it sounds like an active room. However, their use of effects is minimal.
@susanb42134 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about sound engineering, and even I can hear the reverb-it's completely obvious. And I agree, it's not "cheating." It makes the song beautiful and haunting-it doesn't make them any less of an a capella band. Don't know why some fans are insulted at the insinuation that they use today's technology to enhance their recordings. And PTX has never said that they don't. In fact, Kevin talked about how they electronically enhanced Mitch's voice on their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody to make him sound more like a guitar. They are pretty transparent.
@JasonJrake4 жыл бұрын
On "The Sing Off," where Pentatonix got their start, the judges kept expressing surprise that they pulled off such a big, full, sound with only five people. Most of their competitors were larger groups. Also, I've done some basic recording for Acapella groups, and they often pick rooms with "natural" reverb so that they technically aren't modifying the voice with anything digital (there are some Christian denominations that consider instruments immoral to use in worship music, so they have a lot of clever tricks to make recordings sound better than they should).
@greywuuf4 жыл бұрын
Even on the live shows and interviews ...especially when Avi was asked to do his overtone ....he would look up to the booth and say " give me a lot of reverb" ... delay is also used ...what they do t do (usually) is double tracking as that is something that can't be done on the fly live.
@ScottyP7134 жыл бұрын
Reverb although electronic in a recording situation can be a natural occurring phenomenon like in a church or music hall so if they recorded in a live hall it could be legit reverb. :-)
@EhrineAshbark4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Perhaps one of the best examples of this (and a good way to show the pure talent they have, is the recording of Silent Night that they did in a church.

Who said they don't use reverb LOL , every a cappela group uses reverb, the ones that record in a studio, it doesn't remove from their magic and talent, it just makes it "shine" more, the talent is still there, I guess some people are really sold on the a capella no instruments and no effects, even when they sing it live their mics have reverb, that's the basic effect every one has!!

I’m pretty sure the echo/reverb you hear could be from the room or area they are using. If the room that’s being used is pretty big then you might hear the echo/reverb
