Honestly, I'm kind of like that and I know it sucks. I'm really trying to change because I don't wanna hurt the ones I love by thinking being mean is just "my way of flirting or showing affection". I need to do a lot of self-reflection and am ready to become a nicer person because why be mean to your loved ones??? It doesn't make sense. It really doesn't. I should show them affection and love instead of being mean!!!

Who the f does that? Over cartoons and fictional stories/characters?? I used to be a punk and argue with other teens or adults online. But I would never put someone who is younger than me down (emotional developing children don’t need that negativity) , and (no matter who) even tell others to off themselves. I think it's deeper than just being mean to strangers. I think hierarchies and power dynamics affect our lives so much that when we are powerless in one aspect, we turn and create a hierarchy to take back the power that's been take from us. Consequently, we aren't mean to strangers but rather we feel emboldened to be mean to those we think are supposed to serve us even if they are complete strangers. Celebrities are meant to shut up an entertain us they way we want and when we want just like waiters, cashiers, bartenders, etc. In a capitalist society where everything is a commodity, we feel entitle to people just like we feel entitled to things/property. Even children. They are to be seen and not heard and do as they're told without questions or opinions. Anything less than servitude is disrespect. Thus one's own agency is often perceived as selfish and disrespectful to someone else.

To be fair characters and real life people are different. A mean character can be entertaining, or funny or we watch them have character growth and that's great to watch. The problem comes when people have a hard time differentiating between fiction and real life. Joking about taking a characters personality for your own is one thing but then you have people, who actually do it and that's the real issue

Bottom line, most people feel powerless in life🤷🏾‍♀️. They don’t like where they’re at financially, physically, mentally, spiritually & can’t stand to see other people hold qualities that they lack. Often having genuine confidence & comfort in yourself is seen as cocky or arrogant because people can’t fathom the peace KINDNESS/MINDFULNESS brings to yourself & others (AND YES THAT MEANS YOUR NOT RUDE TO OTHER PEOPLE FOR NO REASON). When you start to value yourself you also value others regardless of their opinion; so this whole “fake Alpha” personality that people do IRRITATES me from my feet to my dead ends🥴. It shows lack of maturity & a lack of emotional intelligence, IDGAF 🤷🏾‍♀️

This is a good point. One thing that always bothered me is that someone in a competition will be 1st place and people will find something bad to say, or compare them to an older icon. If they get a perfect score then they'll make something up and lie. It's like people are obligated to stay "humble" and can't talk about their talents or else someone will try and tell them they're not or say they're bragging/arrogant. It's just as normalized to downplay yourself to make others feel comfortable. It takes a lot of emotional maturity to admit someone is better.

I was visiting my childhood, and I noticed how many "mean girl"/"bully" characters there were. I'm sure the 2004 movie Mean Girls popularized the behavior as "cute", "sassy", "hot", etc. The amount of excuses made to justify it are abundant. But, there can be exceptions to those excuses made: abuse and neglect. Meanness can manifest as a way to take back their power, their respect, and whatever else was lost from them. Perhaps, they never knew how to properly express their emotions due to the way their early life/childhood was structured - or the lack of structure that took place. Otherwise, I see no reason why meanness would possibly be excused in media. That's not to say abuse and neglect both give the person the pass/full right to be absolutely mean to everyone all the time. There are unspoken rules that need to be practiced such as the Golden Rule: treat others as one would like to be treated. Meanness is still meanness no matter how it manifested. Mini Game: Name one "mean girl"/"bully" character that you remember from your childhood! You can also explain the reason why they were considered mean to you as well.

Gotta love how nowadays being mean is toted as a positive or quirky personality trait, hidden under the guises of being “confident”, “bada*s”, “blunt”, or “sassy” and hold so much pride in never changing and insist that they don’t care if it rubs someone the wrong way or hurts others, because they’re being “authentic to themselves.” But then are probably the same people who are woe-as-me crying in their rooms at night questioning if anyone truly likes them, or why they can never get friends to stick around for long and struggle to develop valuable healthy relationships. I mean…actions lead to consequences lol. And no matter what they say now or in public, they WILL care about how others treat them in return for it sooner or later. If you refuse to change and opt to just slap a positive title over your negative attributes and hope to get away with whatever u want, you will never grow as a person. And it doesn’t matter who you are-EVERYONE has room for growing and should strive to become better versions of themselves. Because no one is perfect just as they are now, but change is possible if you aren’t afraid to acknowledge your downfalls and negatives. Otherwise others are gonna leave u behind as they continue to grow and learn.

Her content isn't my cup of tea as it tends to not be very funny, however people took that to a whole new level. People are makings videos upon videos on why they hate her, made her apologize for a non-offensive joke, tried to frame her for saying slurs, even harrassing her artist to the point where her artist had to filter her name out of her comment sections, and now they doxxed her and are making fun of her looks. Mind you, all of this is not because she is a horrible person, but because she makes cringe content. You will never see this type of energy for actually bad people. It's so sad.

A lot of people see not getting into arguments as "you're not standing up for yourself" as if you don't have the right to not engage in meaningless arguments with other people. They really think the two modes of existence are badasses winning arguments or total wimps and that fuels toxicity and negativity. Walking away, smiling or just being polite and not getting into a debate with someone are all perfectly fine options and I wish people would stop going "you need to stand up for yourself". No I don't. I don't need to do anything, I can do whatever I want.

I've been getting daily suicide bait from a fanfic author repeatedly for over a week now. I pointed out that the only Central Asian character in their multi-story, 150+ chapters fanfic is a serial rapist human trafficker who thinks women aren't people, and at first they pretended they were upset about bad representation. They said they'd let me guest write a chapter with a Central Asian character who isn't evil incarnate. Then I took too long to reply to an email and one of them lost. their. mind. at me. I apologized over a dozen times, but they insist I never said I'm sorry, and has been sending me suicide bait on anon on AO3 constantly ever since, usually always including slurs about Jewish people and Arabs (Central Asians aren't Arab but racists don't understand the difference). Now they've deleted all my comments and are moderating comments on their fics so no one can ever voice any thought other than praise ever again. Moral of the story: give up. Do not talk to people in fandom. No matter how bad the representation you're given is, do not say it's bad, do not trust white people when they say they want to "do better" or "do good representation", keep your head down and avoid anyone who's too invested in fandom. White people in fandom will look at you apologizing 14 times and say you never apologized at all and deserve to die and should kill yourself you stupid Arab k*ke, because that's the level of entitlement they have when talking to POC. The word fan originated as a shortening of the word 'fanatic', and some people really embody that.

A lot of people tend to emulate popular jerk characters like Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty because they think that somehow makes them likable? Or some people think being a C U Next Tuesday is cute and quirky/having a personality. The unhinged fan in Aggretsuko is a PRIME example of fan entitlement. Feeling complete unnecessary ownership over your favorite source of entertainment that one is overly obsessed with. The fact that he tried to kill Retsuko at the end… I also 100% agree with you when it comes to people that don’t know how to use context clues and put two and two together. I have had so many people on the Clock app try to start being rude with me because they don’t know how to rub their only two brain cells together to use their contacts clues. I guess me using similes/analogies and creative language is too scholarly for them to understand. I don’t understand why it’s such a “trend“ for people not to use their brains and they go off initial reaction. Example I can give is when some dude reply to a comment of mine saying “Batman should kill his rogues gallery instead of keeping them around so he can beat up the less fortunate for his own pleasure“ I have course said that’s not true, because it’s not, when he asked me why he doesn’t kill them I gave him a video answer. And I made sure to use “saying that Batman goes by his no killing role because he enjoys being out the less fortunate is just as stupid as saying Bayonetta where is the clothes that she does end game because she’s a slut” Those are both ignorant takes onto fantastic characters when you remove the new wants that builds up that character. He just went on a complete rant spamming leaving 13 comments “debunking” me even though he said absolutely nothing to defend his argument that Batman should kill. In my respectful and informative response to his question I even pointed out one of the many Batman‘s where Bruce Wayne does break is no killing rule. There are multitudes of Batman that do kill, but the one I use specifically was from a Jason Todd story. The dude responded, unintentionally agreeing with me that Batman shouldn’t kill, by saying “well Bruce Wayne never should have become Batman if him killing one person is gonna make him unhinged and go around killing people“……He even had the nerve to finish it with “agree on disagreeing because clearly you will never admit that you are wrong. Good day miss” WTF? I think he was just really triggered and pissed off that a WOMAN knew more about Batman than he did. I try to have a respectful/civil discussion with him but he was quick to try to “shut me up and put me in my place“ 😂😂😂😂 The extra irony on his bio he says “I try my best to be a nice guy“ yeah the Reddit kind, only nice to a woman until she disagrees with him 🤣 For real though, he just kept posting comment after comment after comment after comment leaving me that essay and finished it with a comment that clearly says “I am not interested in talking to you anymore“….like damn you asked me a question and I answered it but he went off the rocker.

Like Santana literally was rude for no reason to most people and even said some anti-Semitic shit to Rachel. When people bring it up, they say that both those characters developed as people but Santana was still pretty rude until the last season. Rachel was trash and she was still kind of a diva by the end. People just praise Santana for the stuff they hate Rachel for. Now I love Santana's coming out arc as a queer woman but I can admit she's not a nice person. A lot of my memories from when I was a young kid were hearing my aunties talking about the latest TMZ drama or watching Wendy Williams on daytime TV. I was always confused like, are people out here really fighting over things like this? I could never put into words what it all meant, so I'm really glad you laid out this issue and walked us through it. Also, just asking because I'm interested in hearing your input on it, but could you cover Euphoria Season 2 and what went right and/or where the writing fell off? (This part is just my thoughts on Euphoria S2) Personally I love Maddy's character growth (though she still needs to address the ableism issue) but I think Sam Levinson got too petty in the writer's room and he kinda wrecked Jules's and Kat's stories. I still love those characters, but this is like one of those moments where we just choose to ignore certain aspects of the story because the writers did the characters dirty. Definitely I think Season 1 and the special episodes had much more care put into them, but I do like certain things from Season 2 (Lexi's play was so chaotic and shady, very iconic)

I am speaking of "Mad Men" where Joan Holloway is known for her witty comments, her sharp tongue and intellect, curvaceous figure, her sexy but office-appropriate style, red hair and beauty. But Joan starts the series being bitchy and while she undergoes character development (as in she was raised to be a ornamental woman and doesn't understand women who choose not to merely go by on their sexuality, makes more sense when we meet her mom in Season 5) but what I couldn't stand is her stans who seem to hype up her comments, even when she is straight up just bullying girls she doesn't consider as beautiful or what not as she is. Like, there are some stans of her's who don't like this sincere speech she made in one of the final episodes about not wanting to settle for something that looks good on paper but they love it when she is being bitchy to Peggy or Lois (who did nothing to her) or to Sheila in Season 2 (actually racist not just bitchy, makes sense in context). I am glad you are talking about Louella and Hedda. I recommend Feud: Bette vs. Joan (though it shows more of Hedda). "Welcome to the house that fear built" Hedda Hopper (Judy Davis). For more focus on Louella, I recomment Esther Williams's autobiography "The Million Dollar Mermaid" and movie star June Allyson said Hedda negged her about wearing high-necked dresses, so she showed up to party in a strapless dress and Hedda made slick comments about June not having boobs or something. Also I recommend "15 Minutes of Shame", a documentary on HBO Max. I stan (I wanna be her boo) Monica Lewinsky and I am glad she used her experience with this negativity to shine a light on people who had their lives ruined by online strangers. Also Jay Leno and David Letterman are the Hedda and Louella in her story. Also before anyone comes for me in the comments: yes adultery is wrong but does it have to be life-punishing wrong? Receiving abuse from people? Especially slut-shaming and body-shaming. I love Monica that she owns up to her faults especially regarding her affair with Bill Clinton but still deserved to be treated decently (for more, I recommend ModernGurlz vid on Entertainment Media mistreating Young Women, the John Oliver segment on Public Shaming, and look up the Tom Green episode "The Monica Show" which thrived on positivity).

I have never understood the love of mean/rude characters/ppl. Eg Simon Cowell, Gordon Ramsey, etc. Idk if you know the show The Vampire Diaries, but there was this dichotomy between doppelgangers Elena who was sweet and good and Katherine who was evil and bitchy. Fans used to shit on Elena and gush over Katherine and it used to piss me off. She was literally a villain who murdered good characters. Just because she had some funny snarky one-liners doesn't mean you should gush over her. Ppl say, it's just a show. I don't think so. It makes me concerned for how that stuff transfers into the real world. Are you gonna side with bad ppl just because they are cooler? At least in House MD, everyone recognized Hugh Laurie's character as the asshole that he is.

And instead she always runs to Nate who always treat her badly. If she is really that confident she shouldnt "love" Nate more than she loves herself, and no one seems to remember that she framed a innocent guy for "rape", when she was happy with the idea of using him for making Nate jealous. And i dont disagree with the scenes of her beating people, but she almost killed a girl for saying something racist. Ok, punch that girl, but beating her with the door locker? Surely the girl now has brain damage ☠️ Also she threatened Cassie before she betrayed her on season 1. And treating Kat like shit just because she was being a true supportive friend telling her the TRUTH. Nate is trash. Oh, and when she made fun of BB's pregnancy. Like WTF.
