Also darker skin is associated with being poor & dirty back in Asia.. while pale/whiteness is associated with being rich. Which is why the Asian system & media is very based on colorism

I'm so sorry that happened to your mom's friend. That's so forked up. Colorism in general is so forked up. I guess "lucked" out as a wasian girl because I have light skin, but it shouldn't even be this way that I'm "lucky." From what little Asian media I do see, they always seem to cast only light-skinned people. I've scrolled through r/LadyBoners and every time there's a light-skinned South Asian man, it's a Bollywood actor. Anyone even a little darker is Asian American or British Asian, and odds are the latter rarely get cast in roles that don't Have to be Asian.

As a black woman who works in Starbucks I'm so used to Karens and white women tears it's not funny. Like I remember a few months ago a white woman threatened to throw her hot coffee on me because I told her to put on a mask politely and I told her to leave the she started crying and mumbling about her rights and how I should be on her side because feminism. It shit like that makes me not want to be sympathetic and not want to deal with feminism it's reeks of white privilege. This is why I have mixed feelings about the often White (and Blonde) Anti-Heroine, often she is so problematic (like not just an asshole but also small-minded and weaponizes her white privilege), like do I like seeing flawed characters that are women and showing us they are human (well, nasty ass humans)? Yes. But where is this energy for Black or Brown female characters who are assholes? Often they are written for us to identify key pros in their personalities but still hated, like even more likable characters who are women of color get made out (to quote Harri, the bad guy Chun Li, Penny Proud and Maribel to name a couple); where is the "good for her" comments for characters like Devi Vishwakumar? When can we be allowed to revel in a Black or Brown woman indulge in her darker side?

I’m so happy to see someone bring up Devi! I’m not all caught up with Harri’s videos but hopefully she talks about this show if she hasn’t already. I think part of the reason Devi works as a character despite being a train wreck is due to the self awareness of the writers. They explore her motivations for doing shitty stuff and have her face consequences for it without villanizing her. I’m in the process of creating a story with deeply flawed black and brown protagonists (men and women) so I always find these conversations exciting. Poc especially brown WOC need more space to be messy without it being blamed on their race

I also see this with the moms in Euphoria with how Leslie is shamed and called a bad mom for not putting up with all of Rue's baggage and for realizing if she doesn't want help then she won't get help and that she is drained emotionally, financially, and more. But Suze Howard is praised for being a cool mom and being a bare minimum ass mom who was emotionally neglecting her children due to her alcholism. Leslie has been the best parent on the show and a lot of white fans were saying she was wrong for that. Suze was basically a negligent ass mom who made sure her kids didn't die and Cassie and Lexi are products of that. Lexi is more independent and others rely on her in a way whilst Cassie is codependent on the men around her no matter how bad they are and doesn't know how to handle her emotions that well. People praise Suze but if anything she is half or a little more than half of why her kids are the way they are and deal with emotions and trauma in vastly different ways.
@asweetbbygoddess8418
@asweetbbygoddess8418 2 жыл бұрын
Like why is Leslie expected to do so much whilst the other parents are allowed to be negligent and abusive but don't get as much criticism as they do as the poc parents. Like I hate how this fandom imo expects a lot and doesn't let these characters be flawed especially poc. I realize what Maddy did was bad putting that dude in jail but it doesn't define her as a person and she was quite literally being abused. The problem is poc especially in media are expected to be likable to some degree and rarely if ever humanize poc as they do white or lighter-skinned people. Poc is rarely if ever allowed to be flawed, vulnerable, or unlikeable because they will be treated more harshly and criticized worst than their white counterparts.

In real life, there are such people, but since this is a cartoon, it would be possible to teach them a lesson and give the children a lesson. Yes, this may not reduce real bullies, but at least the children will understand that this is not good and will learn to resist them. I don’t understand why they miss such a chance, yes it’s quite difficult to write correctly and not overdo it, but it’s also inappropriate to do so

Agree with anything you said in this video, Especially with Chole, Cassie, and Mal. Chole has known to be a fucking racist to Mari and other Asian characters, Cassie fucked Maddy's abusive ex and even dragged Rue by saying "Do you guys really believe her?! Like come on she's a fucking drug addict!", and Mal drugged a man, left the Kingdom because she didn't want to do her fucking job, and lied to her friends about not opening the barrier. Yet, people will defend them because they either 1. Sensitive 2. Pretty or 3. Had an abusive past and it's really annoying. Now for Mrs.Agreste, We don't know about her whole character, but people shouldn't defend her so much already and assume she's a nice person by the way the show portrays her as you said there are so many things about her that are so sketchy. Like for all, we know she might be even if not more abusive to Adrien ( probably gaslights him and mentally abuse him) without even showing it. She's basically the wolf in sheep's clothing, but people like to assume that they're still angels. Also, being an abuse victim doesn't give you the excuse to act like a horrible person to other people, of course, it explains it but it really doesn't excuse it.

You know, when it comes to fandom white-favoritism like this, I've definitely noticed a show recently where people often give the white girl a pass. I've had The Proud Family on the brain recently since the new series is coming out, and I've been seeing a lot of people criticizing the dynamic of Penny's friend group. Dijonay and Lacienega tend to get very targeted (and deserved) criticism for their behavior towards Penny, but nobody ever points out how Zoey is usually complicit in whatever toxic shit goes down. I've also seen people try to say she's the best friend in Penny's main group because it seems like sometimes she feels guilty about it, but she's still willing to laugh along and make rude remarks herself (like in the episode "Tweens to Twins", Penny's other friends ditch her to hang out with a now 14-year-old Bebe and Cece, and Zoey says "Bebe and CeCe are hot, and you're not. See ya!"). I get the feeling that Zoey goes along with her friends when they're wrong because she doesn't want to be teased herself since she's characterized as nerdy and unpopular. But like you said, that may EXPLAIN why she doesn't always stand up for her friends, but it does not EXCUSE her spineless and cowardly behavior, especially when Penny always stands up for her friends when they're being mistreated, like she did for Michael in "Who You Calling a Sissy?". Also, worth mentioning that from what I've seen a lot of people point out, Dijonay's portrayal as a bad friend is riddled with colorism (which I as a white person have found very enlightening), so I understand why people choose to discuss her, but I also think it's worth pointing out that Zoey is rarely held accountable for her wrongdoings (by the show, and the fandom), which I think is also linked to our perception of her as more innocent than her friends because "she's just a sweet nerd who can't stand up for herself, let alone her friends".

What’s weird to me is that Ladybug already warned Chloe ahead of time that she wouldn’t give her the bee miraculous because it was too risky as Hawk Moth and all of Paris know she’s Queen Bee. (That being said she still calls on the others despite that but I digress, they’re a lot more careful with the job) and Chloe knew this. She was warned she wouldn’t be called on often if ever, and got mad at Ladybug when she wasn’t? A lot of people seem to miss or ignore that. Obviously Marinette isn’t a perfect heroine herself but that’s one thing that I have trouble seeing why people dislike her for.

Privilege and white tears. It's living at a level of comfort that the littlest inconvenience blows their mind. And still those people who think "oh, you're so strong... so aren't you comfortable with your struggles?" towards POC. And I am conflicted between how safe and privileged I am, though I know I've had to work underpaid choosing to reduce my food budget to cover rent to get where I am and that I was underpaid as a POC at a very white work place. Also, been thinking a lot about white women making black women raise and nurse their children, meanwhile tossing black children to animals or taking them as literal dolls and play things. White men treated POC as livestock most of the time and white women treated them as toys. Met a woman a few years back that just crapped negative stereotypes as if ignorantly innocent to what she was saying. Her coworker, who was black, was mistreated at work for not being bubbly and flirty with clients like she was. She got upset that a theatre production highlighting indigenous peoples cultural erasure as "villainizing white people". She snapped at me, a mixed black woman, for listing the half a dozen things I did to improve my last job situation but still facing discrimination, as just complaining with inaction and She needed to be upset about an issue from like a decade prior. She also openly believed black people were descendants of Lucifer (thanks Mormonism). Yet she screamed bloody murder and attacked me at like 6a in the morning after getting my number from someone without my permission, for not being FB friends. Yes, unstable, but I don't think her level of instability would be allowed to continue with a family and support system if she weren't white.

@@SweetStberries, not a Chloé _"stan",_ just a Chloé fan here but, huge agreement... Thomas should've just written her off if he didn't like her instead of complaining because it's both a bad look for him, and also the easiest way to not have to deal with her. I had faith in the show for a while but, I ended up dropping the show but, it was _genuinely_ because I was shown one of his posts talking about Chloé which just left a bad taste in my mouth... I don't care if a writer dislikes their own character, the problem for me was the fact that I just disagreed with everything that he was saying, _not the "Chloé is a bad character-" stuff, that I'm fine with, rather the way he said it all... also, in general I felt that the quality of the show was dipping personally._ I understand why people dislike Chloé, and I understand her flaws, _I just like her,_ nothing much to it really, there's nothing wrong with liking problematic characters in my opinion, and I don't think you should need a reason to like a character... I know some people disregard Chloé's actions at times but, I'm _very_ aware she's done bad things, that's not to say I forgive her for it all but, I would've been _very_ happy if she had a _good_ redemption as I'm a personal believer in second chances, _it does depend at times though as everyone has their own lines that they draw._ Also, I'm aware she had more than two chances to change but, it actually felt possible for her to change when we met Audrey who to me is one of the most vile characters in the show. I'm not here to say that _"Chloé is the best character, and that you should forgive her-"_ because no, Chloé is _very_ flawed, and everyone is allowed to have their own opinions, and everyone's should be respected. Chloé's actions _couldn't,_ and _shouldn't_ be fixed with an apology but, she could have at least tried to fix them in other ways... but, we don't see that, we just see that her mother is an awful person which makes her pitiable to some extent however _unchanging,_ she thanks, and apologizes Ladybug, _her hero_ but, she doesn't suddenly change her ways, and her apologizing to someone she idolizes isn't the same as her apologizing to Kim after she viciously rejected him... this was somewhat disappointing to me as in old concept art Chloé was supposed to be friends with Marinette just like Alya, this isn't to say she _needed_ to become friends with them but, I think it would've been very amazing if Chloé managed to make such a change that Marinette, and Alya would willingly hang out with her, if she had managed to turn her life around too I'm sure someone might've found it inspiring. _Here's the concept art of Marinette, Alya, and Chloé' as friends if anybody's curious: __i.imgur.com/sRG748k.png__._ But... that _doesn't_ happen, Chloé's mother gives her development, Chloé doesn't get development... that's not to say she doesn't change some parts of herself after everything we see in _"Style Queen"_ but, she doesn't change to the people around her, she's still just the stereotypical mean rich girl in their class, the real thing that gave her development was _Audrey._ I believe that Chloé fans like the idea of what she _could've_ been, not what she _is..._ which was definitely worsened after they _"ruined"_ her _"redemption"_ arc as you said, because some people might've felt that she was finally close to becoming a better person only for it to suddenly be changed with a reason that people didn't agree with which makes sense as every now, and then in the earlier days of the show Chloé would do, an occasional good deed or, feel bad so, some people might've felt that it was possible for her to change her ways, and eventually become a better person only for it to go south due to the _"redemption"_ itself just not being well executed as she does _nothing_ to really redeem herself to others that _aren't_ the main characters, and she ends up joining up with Hawkmoth which just felt like a weird writing decision to me at the very least, _why would you give her this "redemption" arc then make her side with the big bad guy? I just never understood it, and I personally just disagree with the reason of "Well, some people don't change-" as Thomas said, especially since Chloé is a child, I'm aware she's old enough to at least understand that she's not being nice but, I do sincerely believe that given the right environment or, perhaps people Chloé can change._ I really _didn't_ mean to write so long by the way but, I just haven't gotten my opinions on Chloé out in a while so, sorry about that.

My only wish for her now is for her to get out of the show, liking a character for what they once were _or, what they could've been_ as they slowly get _worse, and worse_ is _awful..._ I'm aware Chloé was _never_ the best but, I believed that she could make a change, and I _still_ do some extent if her _"redemption"_ arc _didn't_ go the way it did, I do think she could've changed her ways, and became a better person but, that's just _not_ the way it went. Somewhat unrelated but, I can't stand how Marinette is trying to make Audrey appreciate Chloé _or, not go to New York without her, one or, the other_ so, instead of saying something nice about her, Marinette insults them both, Marinette had a _chance_ to perhaps make Chloé friendly with her, and she blows it... it aggravates me to _no_ end, I'm fine if she was mean to Chloé prior but, at the _best_ opportunity where Chloé is at a pretty _low_ point, she insults her, _and_ her _"mother"._

Also before any of y’all say “Marinette is half-white”, Marinette is perceived in the show as an Asian girl despite her mixed heritage. Marinette is not white passing in the show so they are not on the same playing field. Chloe was racist to Marinette on so many accusations. Marinette still gave her a chance and Chloe messed up. Some staff from the cram school secretly told that guy the reason he failed because some parents are raging if they let a dark skinned black man be their kids' teacher they're gonna ask for refund and they don't want the man teach the kids “werid accent”. Not only based on racism and colorism, china also got a huge bureaucracy problem (but government keeps silencing these issues). When these three combined together, it just got worse.

I completely agree with this video. Ever since I was young people would tell me just cry and you’ll get out of it. So it’s not even that white women aren’t aware. From a young age it’s almost instilled in us that the world is out to hurt us and we are always the victim. It’s a very interesting topic to discuss as it often times goes unnoticed. I never really realized myself that it was a privilege. In school I would end up crying over an assignment or something ( mostly because I was a mentally unstable human being who was way to stressed out about grades) and teachers would let me redo it or give me a second chance. I never realized I was playing into a cultural problem. I feel bad about crying now. It wasn’t for malicious purpose but I do cry in any situation that brings me stress, and It might have been continuing on a toxic tradition.

Another example of a two white women that always get a pass for everything even though they were toxic are Chloe Price and Victoria Chase from this 2015 video game, Life is Strange. Chloe Price always complain about how life doesn't go her way. She's 19 who act like a 9 year old, always making excuses for her actions and never takes full responsibilities for her actions. She's also at a legal age where she could've moved out and drive away since she hate everything about her home life. When Max called her out about how Chloe can't always blame all the wrong things happening in her life, she said "I gotta blame somebody, otherwise, it's my fault." That made me realize she isn't good enough for Max to be in a romantic relationship with, and I feel like many people in the fandom ignore her terrible behavior and makes excuses for her or let her get away because she's a main sapphic white woman lead in the game, along with Max Caulfield. She treat a gun like a toy, made a sexist comment about how she believes she should be the one to control the gun and it's the men need to be in check, try to steal money from the handicapped fund, uses her best friend Max Caulfield for her time traveling power to fix all of her problems, and does many illegal things to the point where she broke into a school during the night and get cash from drug dealers too. Victoria Chase is also another example. She's describe as a "queen bee" in the game, and a lot of people would also make excuses for HER actions too. People in the fandom say things like "She just want to be love by everyone" or "She doesn't get much love and attention from her family, she tries to get it in Blackwell" always forget that she takes a picture of Max without her consent, posted a viral video link of Kate Marsh all drugged at the Vortex Club Party, and drove her to become suicidal. And even if you made a choice to be NICE to her, she stills talk shit to/about you with her servants Taylor and Courtney and her other friend, Nathan Prescott (which, I'll talk about him for another time if there's ever a video posted about white boys topic), tried to seduce and bribe her teacher to become a winner at a contest and when you tried to warn her about a psychopathic teacher trying to kill her, she ignores your warning and brushes it off until it was all too late for her. In the second game, she get somewhat a redemption arc. But why does a terrible person like her get to be confirmed alive in the Sacrifice Arcadia Bay ending, but not likeable characters like Kate Marsh? It's like the game like to normalize toxic white women.

She nearly started a wildfire. And when given a choice, she get Chloe suspended after she takes the blame for her so she can still participate in the play and after all that trouble, Rachel left her for some man that "changed her life" without saying goodbye. I feel like she did used Chloe. Yes I understand that Rachel was groomed at fifteen by older men like Frank, Mark, and people her age like Nathan, who she cheated on Chloe for and we shouldn't ignore that part about her life. It was also sad that she get killed in the end, and even though she wasn't a good person, I still sacrifice chloe so she and chloe and other victims who were tortured in the dark room, get the justice they all deserve and put actual psychopaths like Mark and Nathan behind bars. But Rachel still do other bad things we can't ignore that either. Rachel had a loving big home, a father and a real mother figure who raised her but she still bitch about it?? The only reason no one in the universe including Adrien don’t antagonize her because they don’t know her true colors. It’s been implied that she was the last peacock holder. Gabriel and Nathalie are on the villain side so they won’t see that as a problem. Adrien doesn’t even know that he’s fighting against his own father. He only knows the one side of his parents. I think a part of the audience forgets about these details because we mainly see Adrien and Gabriel’s perspective on their opinion on Emilie. Both of them love her. However, if we don’t see her through their eyes, she’s not all amazing as she seems

It's interesting how the Miraculous fandom both darkens Lila's skintone in fanart and views her as irredeemable, while also lightening Chloe's skintone in fanart and view her as redeemable. And by interesting I mean extremely telling. And people who make Lila mixed race while keeping her the most evil person in the story: I see you, I hate you, your racism is showing.
@whoknows9085
@whoknows9085 2 жыл бұрын
That I will say is probably because the initial art of Lila made her have a darker skin tone, and many people thought she was going to be an actual hero Although at this point it is sus people still try to make her darker than she is, but also lighten Nino and Alya

When lila gets her backstory and trauma explained I'm sure people will be on her side, but unlike Chloe she has gotten nothing of the sort... I love how we minimize the characters appearances and actions, like Chloe showed a lot of resistance to change but there was the struggle to be better, with Lila there's none of it. They aren't playing on even fields because they haven't been fleshed out evenly and that's not on a in-fiction context but rather a choice from the writers to keep Lila a mystery and give Chloe a seeming start to redemption that got nowhere. Because they probably want Lila to be the girl boss villain that Chloe can't be and allow the audience to truly see Lila as just a villain and not repeat the mistake they did with Chloe. It's literally writing tropes

People attack ciara from moving on with Russel her husband from future to this day, while Kim Kardashian has the same situation with Kanye but moved on to Pete Davidson and no one’s attacking her or bringing up her past. It’s really annoying and sad that people are more strict or tough on black women and even men. When a tall black guy walks into the room many people are afraid of them, but if it’s a white tall guy no one’s looking scary like. People need to stop seeing black peoples as a threat or bad.

This is someone who doesn't hate the characters in Euphoria but I at least try to understand them and why they do half the shit they do and a lot of the characters if not all do irrational or participate in unhealthy behaviors. I don't try to judge these characters or at least not too much but I do realize as someone who still has hope that Cassie will learn and grow from this she is afforded a lot of privileges that Maddy wouldn't get in her position. That Rue wouldn't get in her position. That if Rue or Maddy spent most of their time crying and being "pathetic" they would probably get less empathy than Cassie does and she does play a decent role in the hurt she caused Maddy. Cassie is afforded a lot of things so many poc characters simply will not get enough empathy or sympathy and I see this as fandom racism or racial biases and shit. But I still like and root for the characters to get better and in terms of Cassie and Maddy, both are abuse victims who should be taken seriously. I also feel that Maddy wasn't given enough scenes to show more emotional depth with her but the one scene she had confronting Cassie is amazing. I relate to both characters and empathize with them. Cassie fucked up and she's ruining the relationships around her in hopes she will be loved. Still, as much as I empathize with the Euphoria cast I hold them accountable for their bad and harmful choices. I see a lot of what we see for Cassie as an explanation for why she is the way she is and imo not many fans hold the parents accountable for how their kids turned out. Too many people treat trauma and bad shit happening to characters as an excuse when it is supposed to explain why they are the way they are. Maddy deserves the world and so do a lot of the characters but they have to try and better themselves and acknowledge they are wrong. I don't like these characters' actions, especially Cassie's and Jules but I also see gender play a role in this. Nate is allowed to be unlikeable and be a shitty person because we expect it out of him and he's allowed to be shitty and still be considered entertaining. A lot of male characters especially white males are allowed to do and be as unlikeable as they want to be and they can still be entertaining. A female character being unlikeable or presenting a lot of unlikeable traits can make people not want to watch or interact with piece of media.
@asweetbbygoddess8418
@asweetbbygoddess8418 2 жыл бұрын
I want to try to consume media more critically and with an empathetic mind and as a result, I still believe that Cassie can get better and so many of the characters have the potential to do and be better. I was happy Rue did. I just want Cassie, Jules, Kat, Maddy, and Lexi to have happy endings or confront their trauma and issues and try to heal as a lot of these teens do harmful things to themselves and cope with their trauma and issues in healthy ways. I want them to get therapy and get better but I know not everyone will be able to get better. Overall, I like Cassie because she is entertaining, emotional, and because she is flawed. Because she is unlikeable, I like her. I can't really hate her or a lot of the characters unless it's Nate fucking Jacobs who uses everyone around him for his own personal agendas and can afford therapy but chooses not to. He abuses women and is a pos.

honestly i’m so grateful i found your channel. it’s amazing how much work you put into these videos for one but more importantly it’s truly enlightening because i’ve never realized or noticed many of these things before and now after hearing you explain it i can see them so plainly in front of me… Cassie Howard especially (since i actually saw euphoria and haven’t watched much of miraculous ladybug or descendants). i see so many people giving her endless sympathy and pity even after her absolutely horrid actions and just blaming them on anything and everything else other than her. Yes her problems are real that doesn’t mean they can excuse her actions or make her any less of a terrible person. Like where is the same treatment for others? it’s really scary how i didn’t even notice many of these things before your videos..

I'm extremely sure Emily Graham De Venily is the cause of Gabriel's evil even before Hawkmoth. Emily most likely held the guise of a nice lady and that's what charmed Gabriel to marry her. Gabriel goes insanely far for this woman and there's only so much someone would do for a nice person. To convince him to commit literal terrorism, I'm almost sure Emily had to be manipulative in some way. She's likely the previous user of the Peacock Miraculous and likely to have been the one who broke it seeing as how Gabriel seems to have done so much research on the Miraculous, they aren't gonna use an already broken one. Might Emily be nice? Maybe. But there's no way she's 100% innocent. I had no idea people actually thought she was a very nice person because that seems like such a shallow thought since we have never seen her as a person.

I said many times, that Cassie gets defended because she is white and pretty, also she is infantilized and if she was a child who can’t do anything wrong. I remember people were attacking me for it, after the last episodes, people don’t even know how to defend her anymore. Even maddy is not relatively the best person, gets condemned by her bad actions, which is not a bad thing, but people don’t defend her as much as Cassie.

It’s crazy how Ginny from Ginny and Georgia is very similar to Cassie as far as a character. Although Cassie’s character is written little better, there backgrounds and dynamics between them and their parents are very much alike. However there is a big difference in how each character is treated by the fandoms.

Yes when it comes to ginny people can openly talk about how much they hated her, when it's cassie people defended her so easily. Holding character of colour accountable is always so easy but doing the same thing to white character immediately there's tons of excuse why this character doing that. White female character has the privilege to not experincing racism, people being less harsh toward them, allowed to make mistake, being forgiven so easily, doing the bare minimum people can give too much credit to them

So what I was trying to say is that poc who got into fights. I've seen that and they get punished for it. My comment was made for the fact if I felt guilty for what I did by the rules of school I should be punished for what I did but I didn't. That's my point. It was wierd that I didn't. Also I'm trans man so I have been see as the flower that should be care for even though by school rules I should have been punished for it. In elementary MOST things we learned about in history were about black skinned people and refugees. We rarely even mentioned white icons in history. It’s really ironic how at the time the school was located in the U.S. but we didn’t learn much history about the country except for the civil war. Instead we focused on different continents of the world and Asylum Seekers EXCEPT FOR AMERICA, for three whole units. (Three Units is around 4 months) We we’re taught that we should let anyone that comes asking for help should be let in. What they don’t tell you is that innocent people who worked hard to get where they are are forced to vacate their homes in order to “take care of others”. You HAVE to take care of yourself before you take care of others otherwise you’ll end up with nothing. I honestly had no idea what that school was teaching us, I’m glad I only stayed there for one and a quarter of a year.
