The middle-class will gladly pay if they think their child is in danger, the working-class may try to force their kids to school if they can't afford it, hoping they return home safely, and the under-class won't cooperate nor pay a single penny, because they're probably on psychological medication and won't have anything to give.

She probably earns more, because she get's ministerial pay on top of her MP salary. However are we going to reject any suggestion that an MP or Minister makes simply because they earn more than us? What about if a teacher who earns say £40k a year advises we don't take kids out of school in term time? In principle, she is correct. The problem is holiday companies hiking prices and exploiting parents.

Here in Canada you can take your child out whenever you want but you're also responsible for the work they missed. Are British parents willing to take responsibility for missed work or do they just want the fun part of the holiday? There's no problem taking our child out of school if you don't make the teacher or school responsible for the work your child has missed.

My nephew in Italy gets to travel 3 to 4 times a year and at 10 years of age has visited at least 15 countries and he's learning his 3rd language, making friends all around the world and he's mature beyond his years. When he gets back home and at school he writes about where he's been and does a little presentation in front of his classmates. It's history, geography, languages, culture, food, architecture, art. He learns how to move around in different cities and places around the world. A few weeks a year abroad teach him so much more than what he's learning in class. Having been in the UK for nearly two decades I can say UK school curriculum is also so far inferior compared to other European countries. Trust me they would not miss much if they went on holiday.

@gillianessien7417 that is fair in my opinion. The problem with British parents is they would not take the responsibility for their child’s education. There is a culture in the UK that the schools and teachers are responsible for their child as and when it suits them.
@BP-of5cp

@@mjl2904 the British parents I know all work and have worked hard to own property and give the best they can to their kids. They also expect the kids to put maximum efforts into education because they want them to be successful and get into good universities. I can believe that parents who sit at home collecting benefits because they cannot be bothered to do anything in life are hardly caring about their kids education but I'm hoping that's not the majority of parents.

How about you address the practice of bumping up the prices out of term time?
@crispybits3765
@crispybits3765 12 күн бұрын
The root cause of this are the massively hiked holiday prices during the school holiday season. Until someone makes them regulate their prices over the whole year, people will keep taking kids out of school during term time as it is cheaper to pay the fine and take a rap on the knuckles from a grumpy head teacher.
@danielcampbell3686
@danielcampbell3686 12 күн бұрын
Athough I agree you shouldn't take your kids out of school for a family holiday, and its sefish to do so, the fine should be much higher than £80 more like £500 per child. I do also think the government should bring severe pressure on the travel industry to keep prices the same as they are outside term-time so parents don't feel they have no choice but take their kids out of school, just to be able to afford a family holiday.

Yeah this looks more like it’s designed to be a messaging thing more than anything. Almost like they’re hoping the thought of “losing money” will deter some people without actually setting a fine that can serve as a real deterrent. Plus £80 is such a weird fine to set. School absence is a very complicated area and we cannot assume that all of the kids are missing school simply to have fun. @@theolddog5129 One would hope, however not all schools are as attentive. I am familiar with a case in which the school was unaware of a domestic issue until we notified them, despite the child missing over a week of school. Noting the comments from parents about cultural experiences whilst on holiday rather than in school, I have done quite a lot of teaching as a volunteer being a semi-retired professional engineer in a highly demanding field. Firstly, it is not necessary to go abroad to experience other cultures. The majority of schools these days are multi-cultural and children can experience other cultures simply by having a positive attitude towards their peers. Secondly, learning of mathematics and science subjects is incremental and the harm done by missing just one school session multiplies as time progresses. More and more jobs these days require the ability to apply mathematics and scientific analytical skills - even car mechanics and gas engineers now require these skills. There should be no doubt that parents who take their children out of school during term time are harming the childer's prospects for the rest of their lives. The parents who take the view that the children are theirs and not the school's prisoner are depriving their children the opportunity to learn key life skills. This is to work within set standards. Most reputable employers will not wish to employ someone who cannot or will not work in accordance with the organisation's standards. The fines should be made proportional to the parents' financial means in order to be effective.

Reactionary nonsense. There will not be any teachers left soon given the disgraceful attitude of so many parents undermining schools. In each of the last two years 44,000 teachers of working age left education and the next set of figures is likely to be similar meaning almost 100,000 will have left in three years. There are major societal problems now but they are going to turn into the mother of all nightmares very quickly when schools are being attacked from all angles; by parents, government and the media.
