The wisdom and reflections of a dying man giving advice to his fans and maybe his Queen brothers and of course being masterfully done by Queen

When Freddie hit the first oh in the chorus I got goosebumps. It is said the track is a dark, haunting song with a positive message behind it, talking about freedom and independence from society. I love this song and the way Freddie sings it

I think it was Freddie leaving all of us a message when he wrote this not to try so hard in life. He was in his last few months of life and I believe that played heavily in the songs he wrote for the Innuendo album. I know all the songs were listed as written by “Queen”, but Freddie wrote this one. Just as all the beauty he was seeing while looking out the window in Winters Tale, he was leaving all of us lovely thoughts and messages. He did, in fact, love his fans. That’s why I also still cry when I see the These Are the Days of Our Lives video when he he says goodbye to us at the end. Thank you for reacting to this song. I had requested it a long time ago. Please do the Saturday, July 12th live at Wembley Tie Your Mother Down and the quick 3 song melody that follows. It’s fabulous.

I always thought the same. Perhaps when you are at the closing chapter of life, you can reflect back and wonder why you spent alot of life stressed/worried/upset. I found it quite touching that, a man who had dedicated his whole life to pursuing his dream, would tell others not to try so hard. But perhaps there is a message there for us all. Perhaps a parting gift he was giving us to think about.

Freddie was mostly at home at this point. He came to enjoy more of the simple life with just his friends and out of the spotlight. Loved his garden and koi pond and Mary’s child.

Freddie always felt the importance of just being yourself & accepting it. Don't try so hard to be something your not. The line.."dressed as lamb instead of mutton" (don't put on airs). Freddie was just a fun loving guy & wanted everyone to just be yourself..be natural..Don't Try So Hard. I Love your Queen reactions...you just Feel the Music..you never Try too hard.

All 4 of the guys were masterful and perfectionist, Freddie probably the most. The sergeant major reference is just that, words, I don’t believe they really mean anything in particular. You put these 4 geniuses together in a room with their instruments 🥁🎹🎸🎸 and Freddie’s absolutely fantastic voice and you with a beautiful song! Freddie could sing the phone book and people would love it, along Brian, Roger and Deacy, they’d put music to it and Queen would have a #1 hit! I believe that this is one of those songs that the listener has to put a meaning to as Freddie did a lot with his songs. Beautiful song, fantastic reaction Hap! Can’t wait for the next one!
@deboraclark57913 жыл бұрын
I feel the sargent major is very important, to me he represents people who strive to belong to what society expects, and the sargent is willing to walk lockstep so he can lamb (praise) instead of mutton ( be an outsider) He must not speak to loudly his own thoughts else he may loose his special place in society, he will stand out from the crowd.
@karolyn86443 жыл бұрын
@@deboraclark5791 "Dressed as lamb instead of mutton" is an old Britishism that describes someone trying to look younger or better than they really are. It is often applied to women who dress and wear makeup in order to disguise their real age. In the context of the song, I think the man is striving for the look of a superior person. But it fits your description too.

I feel the song speaks to people's struggles with hardships, and also encourages people not to be afraid to think differently from the crowd, be yourself, be courageous.

I really enjoyed this reaction, Hap! I said to you a while back that you had quite a gift, and what I mean is the way you can connect to the music and with your audience, in a way that makes us feel different emotions than we did before listening along with your reactions. Watching and hearing the way you connect makes the experience even more profound, especially with a song like this one, which is an emotional Rollercoaster anyway. Just my 2 cents, but I was absolutely stoked to see this in my notifications this evening. Thanks!

I remember John writing in the Fan Club magazine at the time they were working on this song...said they were spending a lot of time discussing the drum beat during the guitar solo....so a long time working out about 20 seconds of something many people wouldn’t worry too much about....that’s how meticulous they were

Great reaction! I am glad you have finally reacted to this song! The composition in this song actually has a very modern progressive rock feel to it. You almost would not be surprised to hear something slightly similar from Tool these days. Freddie is referring to rules within society that we follow. The sergeant major parts just means that you might one day be the one that is in charge. He is giving advice.

The thing that comes to mind for me with this song is several interviews Freddie had with David Wigg in 1985 & 86 where Freddie said regarding his relationship (at the time I believe he was mostly with Jim Hutton) that he had a stable relationship where he didn't have to try so hard. He also talked about trying to find the right person and implied that he came to the realization that maybe it doesn't have to be just one person of the opposite sex the way that society leads one to think, rather maybe it can be several and maybe it doesn't have to be the opposite sex. I got the impression that he thought he had tried to hard to find the perfect person and he just had to stop trying so hard and just let what ever will be happen. I do not know if that is what he is referring to in this song since that interview was quite a bit earlier than when this song was recorded but that is what I think of when I hear this. They often put songs aside that weren't appropriate for the album or weren't coming together easily so perhaps this was one of those song that he started years earlier. Great reaction as usual.

Trying too hard can have the same effect as not trying hard enough and both lead to failure. The song is just saying be yourself and you can't really go wrong and using metaphors in the lyrics which say it

I think the first part is directed at someone who is fighting for something big and following their own path whereas the second one is directed at someone who is following the rules and getting small, predictable victories. In any case and for different reasons, don't try so hard. But it's just my theory and I might be wrong, who knows. Personally I love this song!

Wow, this first listen really hit home, specifically being a "former" Sergeant Major's" wife, that used to be at the receiving end of the orders ...and now I can live the simple life in peace and without living up to any expectations of others with tunnel vision and vegetating in their typical German lifestyle. - Thank you for your touching review Hap ☮

The song IS NOT dedicated to Freddie, neither Brian or Roger has said that it is and there is no evidence to suggest that it is. The song as Roger has said is about getting that letter and having to deal with what you're gonna have to go through

When you see a Montage of videos is because Freddie had died before being able to make one. He told Brian to just bring him songs to sing and they could do what they wanted with them later he didn't care he just wanted to sing. Sad really, we are hearing an alien voice he was getting sicker and sicker. But he cared so much for his fans he wanted to give us all he had left in him.
