Whenever I feel silly for obsessing over Queen and Freddie I re listen to something like this and realize there is a very valid reason he is still just as popular now maybe more so than back in the day. Not only a flawless performance but connects on a deeper level. (Again with the Capt obvious comment, I know. Lol)

Thank you!!!! Brian wrote this song for the movie Highlander. Queen did several songs for the first Highlander movie in the 80’s. Brian said he got the idea from the main character who was immortal and fell in love and had to watch his love grow old and die. It’s very powerful and Freddie’s vocals were nothing short of amazing. BTW, Freddie can sing opera!! He was the first ever rock singer to do a collaboration with an Opera singer. They did an album together during the last couple years of his life. Thank you again for reacting to this for me.
HAP3SPEAKZ I’m so happy you liked it. There’s another that I hope others are recommending- it’s Now I’m Here live at Wembley 1986( Saturday 7/12 performance). The drums and guitars are awesome. Great rock song from their early days, but best performance of it at Wembley.

Great song & great vocals. The whole Budapest concert is epic. The opera thing you are talking about is the album Barcelona he made with a great opera singer called Montserrat Caballe. I cannot think of a more perfect marriage of singers, musicians and songwriters as was QUEEN. The Stunning vocal abilities, showmanship and charisma of Freddie, with the Unique styling of Brian May, combining Rock, classical , and jazz techniques into his own one of a kind un-reproduce able sound, and then squeezing every bit of emotion from every note he plays. Rodger Taylor's command performance on all percussion. And John Deacons glass like style on bass , very much complimenting the violin like riffs from Brian. These four were pure Genius on all levels , and did not just write songs..they composed masterpieces. Watch closely all you young musicians out there. If you want to be a music legend and not just another over auto-tuned mega quantize'd one night wonder...these are the people you need to emulate !!

Freddie didn't work with opera diva, Montserrat, until after 1986. Montserrat was Freddie's favorite opera singer, and was dying to meet her. They eventually met in Barcelona, and fell in love with each other. They sang songs around the piano until 6am. It was she who suggested they do an album together. Their first track is Barcelona, written all about their 1st meeting. As he was composing the songs, Freddie sang Montserrat's parts for her on tape, and sent them to her for her approval. When you get to it, it is shockingly amazing!
@@HAP3SPEAKZ Lynn is correct. This is before any of Freddie's learning of opera singing techniques. "Exercises In Free Love" was released. Since Freddie and Montserrat were living in different countries and each had touring schedules, Freddie would sing Montserrat's part, to see what she wanted. He was new to writing opera and had for some of the record a co-writer. You also have to remember just 5 short years after this tour, Freddie died. But he managed to cram so much music (including opera) into those 5 years. His work was truly heroic. And thank you for your attention to detail about the instruments used and the music. This is how we first learned of Queen. Sitting on our beds listening over and over again to the music of their albums.

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." - Plato To me, Queen are the embodiment of Plato's quote. Listening to their music, and in particular, Freddie's vocals, resonates with my soul's rhythm. And whenever I hear Freddie sing Who Wants To Live Forever live, with those beautiful booming powerful vocals of his, I always...ALWAYS...question, "How can he really be gone?" It brings me up short every time. I KNOW that he is no longer with us, but this song in particular brings up such a profusion of emotion; sadness that we lost such a sublime talent and free-spirit, joy that he was here at all and I had the privilege of seeing him on stage in person (Melbourne 1985), and regret that at the aforementioned concert that I didn't fully understand or embrace the talent before me. To use another quote, "Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." - Theodor Seuss Geisel. Thank you, Hap, for the video reaction and for sharing your emotions and sentiments. It's always a pleasure to share in this music journey with you. Stay safe and well.

It’s worth pointing out that this song is from the soundtrack to the film Highlander, about an immortal warrior who battle to the last hence other “there can be only one” comment. In it he meets and falls in love with a girl, who of course grows old & dies but he’s as young as ever & he is left devastated....hence the line “who wants to live forever” as well as other lyrics in context, the studio is recorded with an orchestra. Freddie sang with opera singer Montserrat caballe in 1988 on the album ‘barcelona’
@@HAP3SPEAKZ I agree, at least the emotion inwhich he sings it with. Many comment on his diagnosis being 1987, however, it was a diagnosis of full blown AIDS not just HIV. Those that read up on the typical process timeline, transition and early symptom, know he did know in 1986, just no confirmation. In that time many that were in the high risk group avoided testing, fear and devastation were high; Feeling ignorance would buy them some time before facing the reality. True for FM too. Mary Austin clearly confirmed that after several attempts the doctor called her to get him to call him back re the tests results.

Gaaaawwwwwddddd.... I was spellbound. In the four months since I've jumped into the world of Queen on line, I hadn't seen any live footage from Budapest until you posted it on this channel. Great choice. Why haven't the links popped up for me? Must find! These four musicians created such magic. Take any one of them out of the equation and we would have still had something good, but they were just phenomenal together. One thing about Freddie's live performances that has always struck me, and you mentioned it here, are the lines he creates with his body as he's singing (too many examples to cite). Dancers are always striving to create beautiful and "perfect" lines when they move. Art in every form seems to pour out of him as natural as breathing.
yes but when they asked him if he knew how to dance, he said no, so they picked him up and put him down- they were moving on the stage like that together. 😂 I read it somewhere, have to find a video to prove it.

This is such a beautiful song!! Freddie did do several opera songs and performances with Montserrat Caballé. Barcelona is my personal favorite song from his opera performances.
If you check out the video for "You're My Best Fried" ( which, of course, you should) You'll see John playing piano. Just amazing at what all around musicians they all were.... John wrote that song for his wife. Opera: Freddie wrote songs for an album with Montserat Caballe - it is truly magnificent. But you can wait a bit if you want...it was the end of the 80s/early 90s... You have much more to get to before all of that
This DVD is wonderful, too. It’s called Hungarian Rhapsody. It was behind the old Iron Curtain, and people hitch-hiked from other countries to attend. On the DVD, Freddie shops, Brian goes up in a hot air balloon, Roger goes go-kart racing (Check out him singing “I’m in love with my car”) and John quietly walks along the waterfront and engages a little girl from England in conversation while her dad looks on. So typical of their personalities. This song is from the soundtrack of the original Highlander movie. The title character is immortal and falls in love. He has to watch her age and die. John wrote a beautiful track for it, too, called Just One Year of Love. The lyric video is my favorite because it highlights Freddie’s unbelievable vocals and word emphasis. Cheers!

Freddie'd had no formal training(well, he'd had piano training in school) at this point. He'd learned how to use his voice differently live by simple trial and error. So many Queen songs were written for Freddie, and, by Freddie, for his high tenor range. He could easily sing in that range in the studio, beautifully, but just could not manage it live as he aged(he was a heavy smoker). Most folks don't realize that he was a baritone or spinto tenor, but you can hear it in the harmonies on the studio recordings. Bo Rhap, for example. Listen carefully to the opera section. Those low notes are Freddie.
This is a poignant and emotional song, but put into context in Highlander it is so much more meaningful. Just beautiful.

Great reaction! I haven't realized you haven't done Who Wants To Live Forever. This is a really amazing song! And you noticed Brian on the keyboards! In the original studio version Brian sings some parts of the song, such as the opening. But I must admit that I think it is much better when Freddie just sings the whole song because his voice is far more powerful then Brian's voice, but the original studio version is beautiful as well, the song has a whole orchestra and a choir as well. For the live version they obviously didn't have a whole choir or an orchestra, so it is slightly different. But you are right one thing about the live version specifically is that Freddie sang this in a very operatic way, he sang with a lot of heavy chest voice resonance, he really used the power in his voice live, with no distortion. Freddie did love opera, but he only met Monserrat Caballe (Spanish Soprano diva) in 1987, they clicked so well that they decided to do an album together. It was the first classical crossover album between someone from the opera world and someone from pop/ rock world, the whole album is amazing and a masterpiece. The title track of the album, Barcelona, does actually have somewhat of a similar feeling to Who Wants To Live Forever, and the song was used for the 1992 Olympic games, you really have to see kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5etqYWFqJyqiqM

While Queen did choreograph the movements for their videos, unlike many other past and current concert performers, Freddie and the rest of Queen did not choreograph their live performances. Their bodies moved, especially Freddie's, according to what the music was making them feel at any particular moment. That's why no two performances were ever exactly the same by any of the members of Queen. Thus, you will see Freddie bending, running, jumping, doing push-ups, getting in Roger's face, bumping the beat with Brian, knocking over speakers, cussing out the audience, losing his temper, dancing, and everything else you can imagine with his only thoughts being on the music and giving a good performance. I see concerts today and the singers just STAND there. How boring is that? Like Freddie and Brian both said, they never wanted their live performances to be like cardboard cut-outs of their studio versions. I suggest that you, for the time being, stick with 70's to mid-80's Queen and wait for a while until you have a better grasp of their music and personalities before delving into the sad but still beautiful later heartbreaking times.
This is heartbreaking for me. He would have known he had aids at the time. They all did. What courage, right? Dedication to art and what they all loved. Their disciplines of engineers, dentistry and Freddie a music degree...all contributed to how they were genius in their composing and performing. The live aid 1986 was one of their favorite concerts. Also, John on the bass. He holds so many of the songs together. And defines others. Another one bites the dust, for example. Under pressure. Don’t stop me now. I’m sure you know others. I just don’t hear much about him in reactions. No criticism. Just observation. Musician myself. Classical. Didn’t know who was behind those songs I remember. And at 68 years old, I’m so glad to have the time to appreciate them. You’re the only reaction person I listen to now that I found you. So here’s my pick for a listen. Freddie asked an opera singer to do a song with him. They jammed all night the first time they met. She loved his voice so much, they did an album. It’s crazy great. Their song Barcelona is mind blowing.
This is a song, that was written by Brian May in 20 minutes in the back seat of a car... Queen wasn't even supposed to do the soundtrack to Highlander at all, it was first offered to the band called Marillion who turned it down because they were on a tour at the time.
