If I remember correctly one of the reasons the US never fully went into the direct colonialism game was because of the absolutely awful experience we had fighting in the Philippine-American War. The tons of guerilla warfare, scorched earth, war crimes, etc. done to subdue the Philippines basically ruined the appeal for the whole empire thing. There was actually a pretty strong anti-war movement in the US during all of this, sort of a proto-Vietnam.
@shnitzilhazel9957Күн бұрын

12:28 funnily enough, even those who like "colonies" or "colonial empires" don't actually like the colonial administration per se, but rather they like incorporated parts of the country scattered through the world. That's what we always have liked, a country with a little part (or parts) of itself far away from the mainland with people who like being part of that country and who also have representation and right to vote. But since *that* concept has no direct name (one could say "overseas incorporated fully represented subdivisions") colonialbros will use the word "colony" but not really *meaning* the colonial system. So yeah, overseas incorporated fully represented subdivisions are cool
@liamnacinovich823216 сағат бұрын
Just because colonialism is generally a dirty word doesn’t mean that those localities aren’t still colonies. For instance the Falkland islands is a colony despite the fact that no one lived there previously. They were at some point colonized by the literal definition.
@Joridiy16 сағат бұрын
@@liamnacinovich8232 close enough, Falklands are an example of administrative colonies for they aren't integrated within the United Kingdom. What I mean for Overseas Incorporated Fully Represented Subdivisions are places like Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla, Açores, Madeira, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Reunion, Mayotte, Bonaire, Saint Eustatius, Saba, Alaska, Hawaii, Kinmen/Matsu, Kaliningrad or even places relatively close to their mainland like Bornholm, Río Muni, Galápagos or San Andrés y Providencia. All these are examples of what I mean, they're fully incorporated, the local population are fully citizens with representation and right to vote and most of them are happy to remain part of the country. Examples of modern day colonies (colonial administration going on where population has no representation, self government or voice) are most of the overseas British territories, some overseas territories of France (not those mentioned above but places like Saint Pierre et Miquelon, Saint Barthelemy, New Caledonia or Wallis et Futuna), some USA colonies (Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and Virgin Islands, American Samoa) and Western Sahara (which even if it's a contiguous territory, it works like an administrative colony in process of population replacement). So it's a bit difficult to tell them apart but the ones that we like are those who are fully incorporated, have representation, voice, vote and the population actively like to remain part of the country they're a part of.
