The one rancher that I know of that had switched FROM shipping his stock to the auction house, TO direct to consumers, is Mike of "My Wyoming Life" on KZbin. After he personally drives his selected livestock to the slaughter house/butcher in the next state, he comes back to pickup the dressed meat and then has to have freezer capacity to store his product. He seems to plenty of freezer space. He has a farm store on site. But the bulk of his revenue comes from online sales to consumers. The meat is packed in dry ice and shipped to the consumers. His decision to go from a one paycheck annual auction sale, where he is at the mercy of the market at the time of sale, to direct sales of the finished product seems to be working for him.

It's amazing how perceptive cattle can be. Tyler pretty much points at them and they understand what he wants them to do (most of the time). He maintains a fine balance between gentleness and respect. Working with large animals, especially by yourself, requires this relationship to be both safe and effective. I've seen abused horses just bide their time and return cruelty with their own brand of "justice", when the person they're angry with isn't paying attention. 😮

What utter nonsense !!! Animals are animals FULLSTOP. Stop inserting human straights into them, they have none !!! I was born and raised and chose to work on animal raiding farms . They are nothing like humans. They are instinct born & driven, requiring a master interface shape of a human to control and manage them. Repetition will help them follow a humans control but that's it.

I would think you would have plenty of local customers in the grass-fed market since you are in northern CA. Many there would pay a premium for strictly grass-fed (all beef is grass fed they are ruminants) there I imagine although I am not sure if CA with the tendency towards heavy regulation would make it easy.

Here's hoping you can make the direct-to-consumer work! Im east coast and we have to jump through enough hoops just to get a meat handlers license to sell in state. Going USDA to sell across state lines, here, almost isn't worth the "fight". The regulations are insane. Someone mentioned Mike's place in WY. I think WY maybe be the only state (correct me if im wrong) pushing hard on the farm bill to be able to do the direct to consumer sales. We can only hope. Bug protein just isn't appealing. Annnd... I'll stop right there.

Trust me when I tell you when you are chopping a water hole through 8" of over night ice, using an axe, with a 15mph wind in temps below -40, it's pretty darn cold. It takes a good 1/2 hour in a warm house to get the chill out of your bones. I moved! 360 miles south In Medicine Hat, Alberta the temp goes into the high 90's with the humidity about the same for the two middle weeks of August. That almost killed me, I get heat stroke in that stuff. I guess it's what you get used to. You can always put on more clothes but the neighbors complain when I mow the lawn in the nude. LOL

Many choices, auction day is instant payday, but maybe not the best return on investment. Direct to consumer has its own drawbacks depending on your circumstances, markets. Maybe a little of both until you build up a market. Either way, you are raising and producing some of the best conditioned animals I have seen on the small market farm scale.

I sell a few grass fed beef every year. Seems like you are in an ideal position to slowly build a direct to market customer base through people you know or youtube, you could do just one or two the first year. 100% grass-fed grass-finished beef gets better pricing anyway Custom seems a lot easier than retail cuts. The hardest part is getting dates booked at the abattoir and custom butcher, once you have that figured out on a recurring basis you could expand it. In NJ the butchers close to beef for deer season for late Nov & all of Dec.

Much easier trip to Galt this year than last year weather/ flooding wise. We ( actually my older brother would take care of the purchasing ) would go and buy calves at Galt or Escalon in January and run them on our dryland, then we would get into our alfalfa season and anything that was rain damaged or had too many weeds for dairy quality would head over to finish out the cattle. There was also lower grade beardless wheat or Sudan that wouldn’t ship to Asia that would head over to finish off the cattle. When investors started buying up farmland here about a decade ago for more that what development land would sell for in other states that cut into that business model.

Hi! I’m glad you were able to get the calves hauled. I’m not a huge fan of auctions because they’re so fickle: a bit of rain, a stupid rumor about some impending crisis, a wompy futures report and prices can drop, pffftt! But there isn’t much else for choice, so raisers have to suck it up and deal with. I wonder if you can reach out to one of those who pasture the beeves until feedlot size and sell direct to them? Have their trailers come fetch the calves from your place and sell the whole lot to one or 2 of those buyers? It’d save you driving + the commission by the auction house. You’ll need to research to see if it’s workable (I know there’s factors I’m not mentioning/aware of), but it’s another possible option. Winter finally hit me and it’s trying to ‘play catch up’!! I’ve gotten 6”, 2” and 2” over the last 3 days and tonight another big storm is due with 8” to possible local 12” more snow by Saturday! Wow-zer!! It’s the heavy, packy, slippery kind, too 😳😵‍💫! I drove to the mailbox (balance issues; I’m 70 and fat😬🤭) and needed 3 tries to get back up a slight incline to the garage! My hubby’s nephew had plowed yesterday, but the new snow was super slick; I sent an SOS and it was plowed and *sanded* in short order 👍👏😁! I’m grateful 😉! Selling the calves will reduce your hay consumption, too; I’m sure that’s a relief. I hope you get good prices for your calves; it takes a little of the ‘ouch’ over the expensive store prices if the producer gets their slice of the pie 😉! I always buy what’s on sale, not simply the cut I’d prefer to cut costs. If it’s a good sale, I stock up 👍! But I plan to buy straight from my neighbor come early fall; a half that will last me about 2 years. So, now I wait for your next video to see what you’re up to 😁! You do an excellent job on the camera work! And you’re great about explaining, too; very helpful and interesting! As a farmer’s widow, I know some about farming; but methods and techniques vary from region to region. And the urban dwellers have no way of knowing if no one explains things; all farming is complicated! So a big, huge thank you for your extraordinary videos!!❤❤❤
