Awesome fab skills! I agree... you never stop learning. Having nearly finished a complete rebuild on a '88 Toyota Truck 4x4, it turned out very well overall. Smashing Unimog, a friend had a Unimog 404 with the 2.2lt petrol engine and that would get to 65mph as the engine revved higher than a diesel, he changed it for the 2.8lt version which made it a bit faster but acceleration was a lot better, he then fitted the Unimog crawler box to it which gave it two more gears below first which made a huge difference offroad but it was a thirsty truck.

Great ideas with the bed sides for ramps and the door stowage. I was planing to make pockets on the bed sides and on the frame and have short pipe sections that fit in them to widen the bead and lengthen it for full weight capacity. Just the same as the cables you are using, but really strong

The hand-throttle is to negotiate extreme off-road obstacles at slower than walking speed, in particular steep climbs and descents. I learned driving on one of these in the military. Awesome trucks. Ours were five cylinders petrol.
@davidray6762 Жыл бұрын
The 404 was designed with a 6 cylinder 2.2 litre motor as standard. Often mistaken as a 5 cylinder because the no.6 sparkplug is hidden under the cab scuttle. Absolute sod to change.
@esr243 Жыл бұрын
@@davidray6762 Thanks. I stand corrected. They were indeed 6 cyl petrol, and a pleasure to drive, especially totally stripped down with a couple of GPMGs and a Point 50 mounted at the back, a real “battle-wagon”. In 1979, we used them as the “red side” (actually in NATO, it used to be coded “orange”) in a full training exercise against the 82nd ABN dropped in eastern Belgium, exactly where their forefathers defeated the Germans but with great losses during the cruel winter 1944.

that oil bath air filter is used on every diesel tractor that's like pre 95. so idd assume they are safe 😊
@Knuck3ls15 жыл бұрын
"Assume" all you want. Technology advances for a reason. Air filters are more effective at all engine speeds while oil bath filters are not. As stated in the video, there is also the possibility that if you accidentally overfilled or used too light weight of an oil you could definitely cause a runaway engine scenario.
@MrBEAN5845 жыл бұрын
@@Knuck3ls1 they advanced to sell more filters 😂 those oil bath filters never went bad. They can be left alone for 10-15 years and still work perfect :p

Nice build. I like the idea of the turbo diesel transplant. I used to work on these things for a guy that imported and resold them. We used to get 2,8 liter gas engines out of regular sedans and drop that in place of the little motors. Twin carb version could be good for 160 or so hp. Worked pretty well.

You don't need to hold the locker lever, or at least you aren't SUPPOSED to have to hold it. Detent will take care of that if the mechanical linkage is adjusted correctly. As the owner of a handfull of 404's I can appreciate all the work you put into it, thanks for sharing! Is the steering box you put in ported for a hydraulic assist, or just running off the box itself?

This is the only hot-rodded Unimog that I have come across so far. I drove a 404 when I was in the army, and that was quite some time ago. What strikes me is that the wheelbase looks a little odd. Did you stretch it? If the engine is shot, you have no alternative than to swap it, of course, but I liked the original 82 horse thing. It was a bit of a guzzler, though. What I like best about your project is the paint job. Looks amazing.
