I can see it keeping shock temps more consistent, possibly tire temps and maybe even some sort of aero benefit. Love to see the innovation.
@jag92g3 ай бұрын
Cali cars had turned up exhausts years back when they were running SuperTrapps, as you noted. Does it help, maybe but it seems more of a look here not over there situation. It might do more for keeping the suspension components/tire temperatures more consistent than potential down force but any additional down force would help. Larson dominated sprint car racing in the COVID era without them so maybe it just took Silva a little longer this season to get it going since Larson hasn't raced as much as prior years or at least as much the year he won almost every night. The NHRA has rules for the headers for the angle and other specs so there is some advantage. But, a nitro engine almost generates the same horsepower per cylinder that a sprint car generates per engine, so that is a lot of air going through the old flammable air pump so there is some positive effect.
@Alebob9113 ай бұрын
I was just getting to say that when I noticed your comment. Definitely not a new thing.
@tcjohnson34373 ай бұрын
Exactly. They have been plagued by mechanical issues all year. Happens, it's racing. Once that got worked out, Larson just went straight back to being himself. Paul sets him up as neutral as possible, and let KL move it around. It's what he does.
@trev39713 ай бұрын
The pipes may have a marginal effect on tire temps or aero, but their true purpose is to distract from the actual source of the performance gain.

Has anyone thought Silva just tried this and when they won they didn’t dare change it even though it made no difference. They might not be superstitious, just a little stitious. 😂 Check photos of this car lately. They probably haven’t changed any decals either.
@mitchell-wallisforce78593 ай бұрын
Everyone saying Silva's putting up smoke and mirrors and doin somethin else we can't see, but the benefits of flowing more gas underneath the wing are there. With those massive endplates, it might result in an effect similar to a blown diffuser, if weaker. The exhaust gases would accelerate airflow under the wing, improving downforce and possibly doing something to quell wake turbulence by filling the air pocket left behind the car. That all said, they are pointed away from the main body of the car, so it might be something else. Then again, someone mentioned another team doing this but being forced to change the setup because the tips pointed towards the cockpit, so that might just be mandatory.
@timg76273 ай бұрын
Yep. Thats exactly what Ive been saying. I think it produces less drag off the wing, specifically in dirty air.
@michaelvickers12023 ай бұрын
100% all modern race cars and motorcycles use exhaust flow for drag reduction Kenny Weld had amazing aerodynamic Sprint car wing technology in the 80s and forward headers assisting flow check his cars out.

The length of the exhaust header can improve performance. This allows for as longer exhaust as the tires would be in the way.

I wonder what the temp difference is or does it get ameliorated at speed. I don't know enough about the aero part, but I've always thought that where the pipes were directed was poor for temperature control, especially when you're using bleeders for consistency on tires, ,might impact rear brakes less so, but I'm sure its measurable.

With how consistent every car is (motor, set up, etc.) now, teams have to try things outside of the box, so of course other teams are going to try it. I'm not surprised. But yes, while it's "different", it's nothing new..
@barneygeorge95883 ай бұрын
WOW!!!! y'all just figure that out? The 'turned up exhaust" DOES serve a purpose. Ever wonder why the nitro drag cars always have them turned up? It's so the exhaust from the engine when the throttle is fully mashed, pushes down on the chassis causing more down force as a result when the car is exiting the turn the driver hits the throttle increasing rpms and the exhaust pushes down on the chassis causing the rear wheels to grip so they can launch quicker on turn exit. This has been done for so many years but was done away with as the exhaust being vented was causing issues with other drivers, they used the excuse of 'to quite down the cars for the fans as fans were complaining about the loud exhaust noise', as such a rule was never implemented to stop teams from doing so. Old school making a comeback. 😊😅😂
