It's Still Watching Even If You Are HATE-WATCHING

James Rolfe really did get it right in 2016, and 2023 proves we have learned close to nothing over the last 7 years.
I really do want to work on Ghost Game but I need it to finish because I don't want to make sure my thoughts are confined to one video.

I never understood the concept of hate watching a tv series. I can understand hate watching a movie since a movie is something you can watch sporadically but you cant do that with an on going series. the dedication it takes to watch an entire series just to hate on it is some kind of dedication that I am sure the fans of said series dont even have. with things like mainstream anime or mainstream culture in general there is no one more dedicated to these things than the haters themselves.

I feel like it boils down to people just wanting to be a part of the discourse that comes along with it. That being said, morbid curiosity isn't always a good enough reason to waste an entire series worth of episodes on.

Gatsby, I don't hate you. I'm actually subbed to you. If you ever want to talk with me, I don't mind. It's great to find people online who have a passion for Digimon. Let me know if y'all want to be friends. I'm a hard-ass, but I don't want to burn bridges.

Firstly, it's bants nothing more, no hard feelings, feel free to dm on Twitter, you can join the discord etc. If you wanted to talk about ghost game there I'd be hype. Most of time I have like one other person vaguely aware of what I'm talking about. And likely once I start working on the ghost game vid Imma want you to do a line read because you were my first video response and that's pretty fuckin cool. Second, you're not the only person in comments mentioning it. I have my own gripes with the show and fully intend on talking about it once the show finishes. I'm just shocked that at this point I'm afraid we might exceed 100 episodes and it's been almost a year since that first vid. Because most people here don't follow on twitch, I just wanted to say something now rather than not saying anything. At the end of the day, I am not going to get heated at a hobby I do in my spare time purely for fun.

I was initially writing my comment about why people feel the need to hate-watch stuff beyond the economics of it and ended up talking about Digibait. See, I'm part of a group that for some reason has decided to dedicate a religion to PaaL (a My Little Pony fanfiction) and for several better and fairly entertaining reasons I won't burn myself even trying to read that, but then I'm like the kid drinking orange juice at the bar while the cool dudes are smoking outside of the rave party. I feel left out, a pariah and even at my honorable age of oh god the grave is coming I still want to hear people say "I agree". It's almost as if neurons hated instability oh wait that's exactly how i- So yeah, even if it wasn't so god darn profitable to piss over stuff, there would still be social pressure to please the crowd. How dare you ignore the latest hot trend of the picosecond, how will I sound rad in the playground if I don't use terms from twenty years ago to describe me telling others what my preferate clown on KZbin said. And that's where it veered off because that same pressure has let's players forced to keep playing the same game ad nauseam (hello Stealth17 and UA:D, or just the big names and their FNaF) and other KZbinrs pushed to be that-one-thing-guy (hello Atun-Shei and Checkmate Lincolnites) and if they branch off they die (hi SockMuppet and Petscop) which of course brings us back to how I'm part of that crowd secretly drooling at the thought of another AverageGatsby Digirant. Not that I don't care about diversity but if I don't add "digimon" in the search bar KZbin is incapable of finding the channel at all. #ThunderboltFantasy is not a thing. At the end of the day hate-watch is just a social activity, which means engagement which means clicks so we can sell yogurt to unsuspecting kids or just feel vindicated. Now if you don't mind I have to find someone who will tell my friends over a 20-80mn video that PaaL is dumb.

I would absolutely agree that hate-watching has a social angle. Several films/shows that I've watched for the express reason to have a laugh at how awful or incomprehensible a show is ended in enjoying what I watched. Finding strangely redeeming qualities to something as stupid as "Xaviar Renegade Angel", or critically deadpanned Sandler Flicks like "That's my Boy" can be fun. For things like Velma, I figure this was a great time to mention AVGN's Ghostbusters 2016 response because it's just old enough for people to forget that they don't need to be on the cutting edge of calling a spade a spade. It's likely easier and more entertaining for people to watch content screaming at the top of a mountain about how bad a product is, but I think for people's mental that if they took time to watch something they might enjoy rather than wasting an hour on a show that allegedly hates it's core audience that it would do good for them. If I heard a single good thing about Velma I might have considered watching it. In terms of niche internet communities, I thoroughly enjoy deep dives into corners of the internet that I had previously never heard of because at the end of the day it's a story that I can derive some type of entertainment from. So to you and your friends having a laugh at some type of MLPFF I'd say knock yourself out. I'm glad random people on youtube can even find my content in the search bar. Even if #ThunderboltFantasy isn't a thing now, it's a vain attempt at trying to redirect people into my content hole, and maybe when we get season 3 it will have some life pumped back into it. I appreciate that I have anyone anticipating the arrival of any of my content. I have started scripting portions of GhostGame pt.2, but I want to give a fair shake to the entire show rather than pushing a video now then needing a follow up once it's finished. There are other series I want to do similarly styled reviews on. Even if it is more "profitable" to continue focusing on digimon as a series, I don't want to pigeon hole my content into only one series.
