Tessie you are right on. My Grandparents, Great Grandparents and Parents used commercial jars for canning. They did only use pickle jars for pickles. No one ever died or did they have any loss, on a rare occasion they did have one not seal. They then put that in the fridge and used it first. Take care and God Bless You Tessie.

Pickles and things like that are not being pressure canned under a lot of pressure. Just boiled. Any glass jar can be boiled, but not all can withstand the pressure from a pressure canner.

My mom used to use the glass miracle whip jars to can in. She said she would water bath them instead of pressuring when they were more pro e to break. Anyone have any experience that is similar? It’s been years since the mayo came in glass jars and we still have some of them.

Hi Tessie sorry don't comment often but this is something dear to me. I was raised by my grandmother and she was raised during the depression. So she too wasted nothing therefore canning from my earliest memories has been there. I still can today although not nearly what my grandmother did you remind of her actually. But I do remember her using these jars when she ran out of regular jars and I don't recall it being ever an issue. For the canning I do I have not ever had a need to use these type jars although I do keep a good number of them in stock. Like Paw Paw I throw nothing away. If I would have to use them I would but I just feel it's a risk to reuse the lids once they have already been sealed once. But it's just a risk factor that depends on need. If you have nothing else and you need to preserve food then yes by all means they can be used. But I would use the food from these before opening from you stock of regular canning jars as a precaution. It is uncertain how long a reused seal may last.
@mikafoxx27178 ай бұрын
My opinion is that if you can for long enough, and the pop top is sucked in, and it's still sealed, it's probably safe. Reused lids probably have more failures is all. Glass of all kinds should last in the pressure canner, coming from fermenting, they can have several times atmospheric pressure even in beer bottles. You'll only ever get one atmosphere in a vacuum so it shouuuld be safe.if you're sketched out, just reheat the food to boiling for several minutes, it destroys botulism toxin and that's what my 1920's cookbook recommends for low PH foods canned without a pressure canner.. before they started telling people to simply not.

This is how I've always bottled my foods! Learned from helping my Mum, we always used store bought bottles. I was in my 40s when I discovered not everyone does it that way... thanks for highlighting this, Tessie! I enjoy watching your videos... like watching my friend in her kitchen, doing her thing... 🙃 🙂

I always use these jars. I buy them new from the wholesaler. Always use new lids. A Ball Mason jar cost 10,$ here in the Netherlands. The lids for this jars are also much more expensive than the twist-off lids. A jar has never been broken, not even with canning meat (90 min).

I never reused jars, this is invaluable, thank you!

Hi, I am watching you from Romania, Europe. Here, we only can in these kind of jars. I have an All American Pressure Canner (which is not common in my country) and I can in these kind of jars because we do not have Ball jars. I never had one break. Also, the lids here are very inexpensive. Keep up the good work!

reuse my pickles, spaghetti or any other heavy glass jars for dehydrated foods, herbs and or to put staple foods in. I simply add a O2 absorber pack to it and works well for me and saves my canning for canning. Ty for the vid. and info. Take care.

I have always used Aldi salsa jars for canning dill and sweet pickles as well as pickled okra, pickled beets, and applesauce. The jars are wide and cylindrical making them easy to wash easy to pack. Never, ever have I had one fail to seal. Nice job. Blessings.

Great video Tessie! I never knew you could use those sauce jars & lids in the canner. My mama used glass miracle whip jars in her water bath canning. I still use them when I'm running low on regular jars. Your videos always make my day a little brighter! God bless ☺

My mother used jelly jars to can jams and jellies. I don’t remember any problems doing that.

And some of those jelly jars from the store are so pretty!

When you make jelly, it isn't going into a pressure canner. Big difference.

For those who have doubts, a lot of those jars (as you can see in the video) are having lids with a kind of check. If they aren't vacuum, you can check it in the middle of the lid. If you can put your thump on it and it makes a clicking sound it isn't good. But if done this several times, and I'm still alive :)
