Just an FYI I just got back from a trip to Portugal. No worries about the airport and flights. Everything was a breeze. No delays, no chaos at the airports. Prices for meals and groceries still a bargain compared to Canada. I think it wise that you choose different locations to vacation but rest assured traveling to Europe was stress free for me anyway.
@stephenjarzombek29032 жыл бұрын
My wife and I flew from Chicago to Lisbon, non-stop, with a checked bag for just over $900 round trip and couldn't believe the low prices for food and restaurants. Congestion was somewhat of a problem at LIS airport, though. We sat on the tarmac for an hour waiting for a parking space big enough for our plane to open up, then another hour for our bag to show up once we got into the terminal. Similar delays on the return, but we were prepared for that from watching updates from a few other KZbinrs. One of them said that if you plan to visit both Porto and Lisbon and take the train between them, it might be wise to fly via OPO rather than LIS if that works for your schedule.
@mariaburlington44402 жыл бұрын
@@stephenjarzombek2903 I flew from Toronto round trip for around $580. As long as you travel off season (which starts mid-October) there are some bargains to be had even at 4+ star hotels. Tremendous improvement at Toronto airport from past months when it was rated one of the worst airports for delays. Literally minutes checking in and also on return with a carry on.
@stephenjarzombek29032 жыл бұрын
@@mariaburlington4440 We noted that some attractions in Porto end their high season schedules and rates on September 30, while others ended on October 31. In any case, we didn't think anything in either Porto or Lisbon was expensive by any means. Only downside was that it rained almost every day, but never enough to wipe out our plans. The staff at the hotel in Lisbon said that is typical for late October.

Glad you two are enjoying your holiday in the American South, my home region. The beaches there are beautiful. Must warn you; you cannot get a proper cup of tea in the cafes; the people there drink ice tea! You'll have to make it in your condo, assuming you can find British tea in the store. As for flying to Europe, it was okay getting there the first weekend in October, except my 2 flights were both delayed leaving. Getting back to the USA was more difficult. I missed my flight from Heathrow to Dallas, Texas; was put up in a posh hotel just outside the airport with my evening meal and breakfast paid for. So no complaints. Was impressed with the politeness of the English people on the bus from and back to the airport. Got home safely the next day. Keep up the good work enjoying Alabama.

Dear Norm & Tina .... another enjoyable travel and tips video! Just back from a few weeks in Fort Walton/Destin Fla. Thoroughly enjoyable with fresh and affordable sea food. Interesting side trips to Nashville & New Orleans along the way. (Another benefit of taking your own car). Although I would like to visit Portugal (southern beaches) thanks for the heads up on car rentals and electricity charges. Given these conditions, Gulf Shores, Al., appears to be an excellent alternative! Unfortunately the pan handle suffered from cold weather during the Christmas season, and a much further south FLA location (e.g. Ft. Myers) would have been a better choice, but accommodation rates shot up (demand/supply) due to Hurricane Ian. I was also surprised on the cost of grocery items at Publix, Winn-Dixie, etc. Prices are up. Overall, the Alabama/North Florida area is a very pleasant alternative to 'mainstay popular' locations. Safe travels! Bill.

Any restaurant in the area worth its salt will serve a decent Bushwacker. Take your car on the ferry between Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island and spend a day exploring the island - Audubon Bird Sanctuary, Fort Gaines and affordable seafood at Dockside Seafood Restaurant. And yes, the state park is a wonderful place for hiking and viewing wildlife - just be sure to watch where you step! I almost stepped on a small rattlesnake that was sunning itself on the shoulder of the campground road - just keep your eyes open! We will definitely go back again. Enjoy your stay in Alabama!

Hi Tina and Norm, thank you for your hard work making videos for those of us just entering retirement. I love your content, however as a single person, from Alberta, Canada, I wish you would include the actual specific Apartment/Condo/Hotels you stay at. You could do this after your returns and reviews of your vacations. When I am looking at going to Portugal it is so overwhelming I have no idea where to start. Thank you so much for all your helpful content. I'm looking forward to hearing more about Alabama. :)

You may want to put south Padre, Brownsville Texas area on list. Parent initial did Florida in retirement but it got expensive. Lower Texas near border still warm in winter and much cheaper than Florida. It’s far but if you are there for winter worth drive to get warmth. Alabama now in my list.

Hey everybody, we are a couple from Montreal and our experience this year was one very memorable. We spend 10 weeks in total in Portugal and Spain. We traveled in beetwen location by buss or train. Never had bad surprise nor regrets. It was the most well spend time and money in our pension time. Yes, the prices are rising in Europe, but not more than anywhere else ! Our vacation was worthing the money, no regrets! 🎉❤😅

I recommend the lunch specials at Doc's Seafood Shack on Canal Road. Also, recommend you try the Royal Reds shrimp at Bahama Bob's in Gulf Shores . We'll be there for the week of Thanksgiving. Hope we see you.

Hello from Woodstock Ontario. I can assure you it is much nicer where you are than where I am. Thanks for the info on Gulf Shores, I will definitely check into it. Sadly Florida has been hit so hard this year, I doubt I will be headed there. Happy and safe travels!

Thanks for watching! yes Florida has been hit really hard this year with hurricanes , they hadn’t recovered from one then the last one hit . Have a great week Cheers 🇨🇦☕️🇺🇸

I had no idea Alabama was so beautiful. What an amazing beach - so clean. And you have it all to yourselves. For a while anyway, I suppose. Yes we certainly have to consider the extra energy costs with any European vacation. Continue to enjoy!♥

I agree ....we go to Florida for the kids sake but I find it too crowded and overpriced food etc.....but for the kids one has to do the theme parks.....I most enjoy a quiet beach looking for sea shells

Hi. Have a lovely time in the sunshine 🌞. Just back from Portugal, first time in 3 years. I just loved seeing everyone again. A few changes but to be on the sand listening to the ocean in the sunshine was bliss. I wore a mask all the way and just took the plunge and I'm so glad I did. With cost of living I just hope I can afford to go back 🙏 Have a great day 😎

Love Tina and Norm. Happy holidays in Alabama. Talking to my neighbour who is 78. Him and his missus have been driving down to PV Mexico for last 10 years from balmy Manitoba. Says the only time he is scared is when driving in Texas! Safe travels.

Try a restaurant called Cobalt. Also Florabama is right on the state line (thus the name) which not fancy but fun. It's a bar with multiple areas. Sit in the northern part outside. So glad you are enjoying AL! You're video was right where we were in May. Beautiful!

We don't have a lot in the way of beaches here in Alabama, but what we do have is (IMHO) beautiful. When I moved to Santa Barbara, CA, for grad school I remember being so disappointed because the beaches there didn't seem nearly as nice as those at home. :)

Good morning to both of you from Victoria B.C. You have inspired my husband and I to travel overseas again. We always look forward to your Saturday videos and appreciate your comments and suggestions. We have booked a 5 weeks trip to the Costa Del Sol (Malaga & Nerja) mid. March 2023. We found very reasonable and well located apartments to rent. We will let you know how our trip turn up and these places might just be new locations for you to investigate. We are "older" retirees (80..& 70...) so this should be interesting and a good test for those who wish to travel on their own later in life. Regards, Ilana

Hi There! Thanks for your weekly videos! Surprised by your sudden turn against Portugal as you inspired us to travel here! We are over here now in November travelling from Porto-Evora-Lagos-Madeira-Lisbon-Tavira for 6 weeks. Weather has been great so far and crowds down. Prices for food still about 30% less than British Columbia. We also note that Vrbo rentals are much cheaper than Airbnb for some reason and very homey! Our daily short term car rental is about 50$ Can per day which is ‘cheap’ by BC standards! We thank you for your Portugal insights but it might not be as expensive as you think….and you can’t put a price on the culture/history aspect. Happy travels ! Cliff

So happy you’re enjoying yourselves. Doc’s Seafood on Wolf Bay is a great Gulf Seafood tradition (fried seafood, fresh oysters, etc) - got to eat there at least once. We love evening music at the Bay-side stage of Flora-Bama as well. Another really cool water-side seafood joint is The Oar House just a short drive away in Pensacola. The Grand Marlin in P’Cola Beach is pretty special to our family as well. Downtown P’Cola Palafox Street is quite the venue as well - restaurants, music, bars, boutique shops. Foley has “the” outlet mall. Fairhope AL is a story book village (love the Dragonfly). The ferry from/to Ft Morgan AL & Dauphine Island is available instead of driving across the Mobile bay. Beautiful places. Tons of great place to be!
