😀 A BIT ABOUT US:
We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

The damage to the road is frost heave. Moisture trapped in the road base expands when it freezes, first putting immense upward pressure on the road and then leaving voids where it freezes. They are pretty well maintained when you start to calculate size. The UKs longest motorway is only about 230 miles long. - the M25 is only 117 miles long, but I don't think I've ever been on it when there weren't roadworks? And the UK doesn't experience anything like the temperature extremes

What a wonderful drive. Glad you navigated the pot hole and awful cracks and rain on the gravel dirt road segment. Super video. Fun stuff about Chicken. By the way we just inaugurated our camper at the Grand Canyon the last two days. Simple window van 15 passenger van no back seats and a queen bed platform with mattress. Everything else is portable like outdoor camping would be. Worked OK. I am happy we also got 16 miles per gallon (gasoline V8 engine) as it is a 2014 Ford Econoline van with high miles but we got it cheap. Thanks for sharing your journey!

I think all the worlds supply of pot hole faeries are hatched in Alaska and leave huge cracks in the roads as they greet the world for the first time. With the advent of tires, I’m sure they bought stock in every major brand! Then they went to work wreaking havoc on the roads. Many of them must stay in their native land for the beauty and the joy of watching so many unsuspecting tourists succumb to their handiwork. And we imagine them to be so cute and innocent! Enjoy yourselves in all that beauty.

The segment of your video where you filmed gaps/cracks in the highway could possibly be due to an earthquake, Alaska frequently has earthquakes. I noticed that the evergreen trees are getting shorter, and indication that you are near the arctic circle and the tundra zone. Stay safe.😎

I commented before on another of your videos, that wildlife moves from area to area due to the time of the season. this was filmed before the salmon were running or the berries ripe, meaning most bears will be on mountainside meadows grazing. You also seem to knock off travel in the mid afternoon? - I think you said you have family in the Chemainus area? If you drive around there you'll see everyone drives more cautiously as dawn and dusk. A lot of wildlife will spend its days in one area that's full of food, but then for the night move to an area they feel safer in, making roads a good place to see wildlife at those times of day.

Years of putting cable ties around cable harnesses in aeroplanes taught me a little trick when fitting cable ties around things with no access behind. Before you start putting the cable tie through the hole pre bend it. By that I mean estimate where it needs to go and bend the tie sharply between your fingers, it will stay sort of bent, this way when you push it through it’ll be trying to come back up through the next hole. You can put in a series of bends to semi shape the tie, this makes it easy to retrieve the end. I’ve even in extreme cases “fished” the end of a cable tie out with the aid of a second one. Get a the second tie and “fish” around until you just hook the loop/lock end onto the end of the tie then carefully pull it out.

Burn permits are not a harbinger of doom. They are normal for most areas - their yearly renewal gives fire departments a chance to remind people of risks and any new regulations, it also puts the name of the person responsible for a property on a register. The burn permits for some of my customers ( I look after the land around large private homes) are in my name. I have to register every year and if a fire was lit on that property that was outside of regulations or got out of hand, I'm the first person they would consider as liable .

I have to say my wife though would not know a cable tie from a bow tie. Oh dear I should not have said that ! Now its my turn to look in the mirror each morning for a week.
