We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Logging and other resources used to involve building villages in some pretty remote areas, so past times and hobbies were important, it's something that has been handed down, and any homes have an attached workshop. If I have a tree comes down on the land that I manage that has a decent burl, I will call someone to come and get it, many people have lathes in their workshops and turn bowls and things, burls tend to have wild grain structures within them and make some really beautiful turned bowls. - if you go into any artsy or artisan store here, you will likely see bowls, lamps etc. that have been made from burls.

There are no lynx on Vancouver Island. No coyotes, skunks, porcupines, moose either. Grizzlies will occasionally swim from the mainland to Sayward area. Wolverines too. The elk are huge on the North Island!

I've hiked Cape Scott three times and stopped at San Jo bay a couple of those. Stunning! And I've departed from Campbell River twice, but catch this, me and my mates did the 6 hour hike back from the Cape and then drove ALL the way to Victoria in 1 day last summer!😆 Total time of that day with a stop for lunch was about 17 hours.

My heart was pounding for you! So difficult to tear yourself away from one of the most beautiful places on earth so that you aren't hiking in the woods in the dark (very spooky indeed). I laughed when you said about living in a VW van - my brother, his wife and their 75 pound dog lived in their Vanagon for 3+ years - I always said I don't know how they did it.

You can come to Connecticut to see bears! I am only 90 minutes from Manhattan and have bears living in the woods right next to my house and enjoy eating our bird feed!

Cool, glad that you are enjoying my home area. If you are wanting to see the big trees on the Island, look up Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park, it is a long drive like this one but down south on the west coast, well worth the drive the trees are epic.

Hello Ambassadors Wow, I heard that you were talking about the rocks. I did a little research and found out that the area you are standing on was the bottom of the ocean floor at 55 million years ago and it moved toward North America and went underneath it about 200 km at where it started melting and creating magma. That magma pushed itself up towards the ocean floor and hence forming the VANQUVER Island. Therefore, the rocks you were touching formed about 55 million years ago and more than likely they are BASALT rock ( they are generally in Black colored) due to the minerals these rock contain. And the minerals are Rick in Iron and Magnesium elements which causes rock to turn into black color. When Chris said " look at the tunnel within the rocks" , that is an indication of LAVA TUBES. When hot magma flows at the surface the surface of the lava cools faster then the inner part of the lava (lava below the surface that is) while the surface is hardened inside the lava still flows like a river eventually leaving a void at where one time it was flowing which becomes the lava tube. On the other hand you will be named as " THE MOST COURAGEOUS TREAD THE GLOBERS". some areas, yeey, I would be scared to go while bears are present, ufff!🥵🥵🥵🥵 However, this is the reason why you are the most watched one TUBERS. If this is in real time, stop at a place, 60 kil north from the bridge in Campbell River, (towards Sayward, which is the direction you are going), and 13 km right on the Rock Bay Service Road, called Rock Bay. It is my go to summer camping campground, seasonally. There is one of the only manned lighthouses left on the coast there, and a phenomenal view of where 3 straits meet, one being Straight of Georgia, the Knodels Channel, and Johnson Straight. In the summer it is booming place, and although the fishing now is touch and go, it used to be some of the best on the B.C. Coast. It once held a school, church, logging camp, hospital and few thousand people. Access by water was the only way in, via the United Steamship company. (if you get some time, there is a big coffee table book in the library about that whole area) There are 2 roads going in. Take the second one, just a few hundred meters before the bridge. Keep on the main road, to the right. There are many a morning I would sit on my front deck, and watch the whales and dolphins in the bay. The may be a watchman there at the entrance area, by the name of Kirt. Tall older gentleman, and a friend of many years. You'll not regret the stop.

Today's adventure with you driving on the logging road and hiking in the park, was very fun, beautiful, suspenseful, and wonderful! Funny you should bring up what Earth would have looked like as in forested woodlands before the cities were built. At one point in the early 19th Century, parts of Los Angeles was woodland areas and even had Brown/Grizzly Bears! Believe it! Near what is now San Pedro near Wilmington and Long Beach, California, USA.

Wandering down an abandoned forest road, what could possibly go wrong at Halloween!!! Loved this guys and what an amazing beach and forest. Absolutely stunning. You two are great. Loved this video. The trees that are bare at the bottom are called lodgepole pines. They grow close together so sunlight doesn’t get far below the canopi so branches and leaves won’t grow. The are tall and straight, so pioneers built cabins with them and the tall straight trees were good to hold up the roof beam which is called a lodgepole.

To Marianne's lunch choice: Au Jus? Aw, yeah! 😋😁 That's a big burl, all right! Burlwood is prized for its swirly, twisted grain patterns, that people said "Nope, we're keeping this one" is saying something! That wood & beach was magical!! 😱🤯 Very much worth the effort, I'd say! All the debris in the little rivers and streams really speaks to the strong storms they get. Such a dramatic difference between the weatherward and leeward sides of Vancouver Island. ❤️❤️😎👍xx

If you get the chance check out the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick on the east coast, 16 meter tidal surge. One of the seven wonders of the world. Very touristy but worth the trip.👍🏻

The VW T25 are a great little van, if you don't carry a lot of stuff. A bike rack on the rear door is useful to carry more gear on.. Bit of an adjustment required when adapting from a Ducato type camper, but most people transition the other way! They are a tough little van, and better on muddy tracks that the Ducato would be. Wow, that was an adventure! We find that the best places are always down the end of a dirt road (in New Zealand at least). Always worth getting off the beaten track. Great episode and glad you didn’t stay in those creepy woods. Fitting for Halloween though.

Don't worry about black bears, they are more scared of you. Black Bears will avoid encounters with people unless it's a sow with cubs. Then she will defend her cubs from any potential threats.

You need to respect and keep safe distance to observe all wildlife in nature. To say (one size fits all reference to) black bears 🐻 , not to worry or concern yourself with being around then is a false statement. Where I lived in several states, frequent with black beats coming close to houses, has always been public media warnings ⚠️ to keep food in heavy sealed containers and have proper "bear preventive" garbage containers. Where I live now, again we get warning updates where black bears have been spotted. Our summer here has no rain, the rivers, streams dried up and lakes levels very low. This late fall, bears spotted in open garages, and around bird feeders. They are starving looking for any type food. Here it's too warm over winter to hibernate. So we have Beware bear caution signs posted several places were I live.

@@lauralarson3490 I have lived in Black Bear country most of my life. They will raid your garbage or your vegetable garden. But they don't come around if they know a man is there. I shout out the door will send them running. But don't do it to a sow with cubs, and always give them an escape path. Grizzly/Brown Bears are an entirely different matter.

I was reading the tread newsletter about your progress. Seeing where you are and knowing that where you’re from this may not exist, you may want to look into snow chains or cables so you don’t get stuck. Some states have restrictions so you’ll have to check. You should mainly use them when it is really treacherous driving. Conditions in Northern States can quickly change and become very scary driving even with all season tires. In the western US this is in the mountains and in other states it is during icy or blowing snow. I’ve had several white knuckle conditions where the car doesn’t go where you want it to go. Hope all is well, safe travels my online friends.

Some 3 minutes and 20 seconds into your video, you come to a stop sign, after you fuel the van... I Googled the WAL'A on that stop sign, but found nothing. Were you guys able to find out why they display the stop sign like that and what does that WAL'A mean??? Is it like in a native American language???
